  • Maisie, Maisie, Maisie, Maisie...
bad luck, bride of a bull
strode out to meet Maisie in the evening light
Maisie, his illuminous grin put her in a spin
    Maisie, lay in the hall
    with diamonds and emeralds
    Maisie, Maisie...
bad luck - the bride of a bull
Maisie lay in the wall with her emeralds
    and diamond brooch, beyond reproach
bad luck - bride of a bull
strode out to meet Maisie in the evening light...
    Maisie!

Maybe he knew a glowing good looking woman called Maisie who dressed well, but she was married to a what he seen as a bad brutish man and Syd was kinda like, ah well, but in a, it is what it is kinda way, maybe even in a, you reap what you sow way. who knows.

Saw another post yesterday with comments about Jugband Blues being his darkest song. Compared to Maisie?!! Love that descending bassline under the second, "bad luck, bride of a bull..." and the way Syd sings the whole phrase. Then comes the sinister "Maisie, lay...in the hole..."

I just love Syd Barrett. Floyd's first album was his masterpiece. He wrote 90 percent of the tracks. Sang lead, played guitar. 55 years on its held up as a classic. See Emily Play is a brilliant single. It got Floyd into the top 3 in the charts. His albums Madcap Laughs and Barrett are great. I believe if he had of spent more time on those albums and had more help then they would have been classics. You can hear the sound of an absolutely great song trying to burst out of each one. Don't get me wrong I love both albums, but they could have been as good as Piper if more time and care were taken on each track. Syd was an innovator. For me, John Lennon and Syd Barrett were both responsible for the sound of English Psychedelic music. 2 innovator's. If Syd had of kept it together and went on writing and recording after Piper and with Richard Wright helping out on writing some tracks. I believe he sounds a bit like Syd on his songs like Remember A Day, which I love and Paintbox, then Floyd would have evolved after Piper as a brilliant Psychedelic band with Syd and Richard Wright writing the material. What a band Floyd could have been. Instead of Roger Waters ego inflated Floyd, that the material was mostly about losing his father in the war or about Syd Barrett going insane. Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall. The only Floyd album I listen to from the '70s is Wish You Were Here. It's a great album. Dedicated to Syd, and Richard Wright is heavily involved in the Shine On You Crazy Diamond tracks. Before being shoved to the sidelines like a piece of rag by the ever growing ego 'I am Pink Floyd' Roger Waters.
It was Syd's band. He came up with that brilliant name, got them noticed, was the main composer, lead vocalist, lead guitarist. He got them a recording contract. He was responsible for 90 percent of Piper. He got them to number 3 in the UK charts with See Emily Play. If only Syd had of just got himself together and continued writing, evolving a bit after Piper and Arnold Layne and See Emily Play and Richard Wright contributing then what was Saucerful of Secrets, which I like, would have been a step up on Piper. IF I GO INSANE, PLEASE DON'T PUT YOUR WIRES IN MY BRAIN. I like Atom Heart Mother as it's a full band Album with each member contributing.

It's the best psychedelic rock album of all time, for sure. The first time I heard it, my life was never the same. It was like an endless rain in my mind, I was obsessed. It inspired me so much I re-enrolled into college and finished my 4 year degree after convincing myself the 2 year degree was all I could take.
You can almost tell at times that McCartney took notes from seeing them in the clubs because he frequently saw them in late 1966 and his British accent comes off much stronger on Sgt. Pepper. There's a video somewhere of Paul, before Floyd are shown playing in the UFO, talking about how what they were doing was so odd and many people had mixed feelings about it but he fully supported it. Even then, by late 66, most people in the country thought they were better than The Beatles, or likely going to be. If Piper came out before Sgt. Pepper, I think its impact would've been a lot more major.
But there were unfortunately issues with Syd missing radio sessions to millions of listeners by the end of July 1967/early August around the time of his horrible acid overdose, or whatever happened. Likely STP, it was going around a lot in the U.K that Summer and quite a few fell victim to it. If Syd was taking acid as often as they said, his tolerance to LSD would've been immense. So I guess it's possible he took an extreme dose thinking it would be like a normal trip.
Nobody will ever be sure and it will always bother me so much that they didn't press him more on this, ask him what happened, what he saw, what he felt. They were too focused on the next gig, this show, that show, and Syd was in no condition for any of it.

I'm not a fan of '70s Floyd because Ego head Roger Waters took over and discarded Richard Wright and wrote most of the material himself. Depressing. I do like Wish You Were Here as it's a full Album dedicated to Syd Barrett. Not many artists get albums dedicated after them. It also has Richard Wright heavily involved, especially on the Shine On You Crazy Diamond tracks. I do like Atom Heart Mother though. Very much a band Album.

I consider "Barrett" to be a perfect complement to Atom Heart Mother. Play them together, mix them up. They come from the same place, same studio i bet. The same feel is in there in the production. Not surprising really since Gilmour and Wright are both involved.
