When compiling my repertoire a while back I went through that thing of “how do I come up with material people want to hear?” The answer came in an interesting way: an old video of blues great Hubert Sumlin came on my TH-cam feed where he commented in an interview “when I play for people I got to feel it in here (the heart), because if I can’t feel it in here, how is them out there ever going to feel it?” That told me that I had to choose material based on whatever makes me feel something inside in some way, choose material that makes an impression on me and moves me somehow. That’s what I do.

This is very true! I live in Florida and I really do not like to play Jimmy Buffet. What do I like to play? I just found out how fun "I Know There's Something Going On" by Frieda of all people. "Give Me Some Lovin'" ZZ Top is another one. I just get a kick out of it. I say do the songs you would do even if you weren't getting paid.

Well said brother..... It's all about what you dig... you don't have to always play the standards

I have been subscribed to you for awhile now, and you always have the best advice. This is just what I needed to hear, as I have been struggling with this exact problem since I have been gigging solo-acoustically (about 2 years now). I am learning that it really is all about balance. Keep these videos coming. Love it!

I started on 6 string banjo with Chicago tuning (standard guitar tuning) and now play a 4 string. I’ve played guitar for years and love the banjo now too.
    Have fun!

Great as always Jeffrey! Keep it up my friend! I’m lead vocals and guitar in a band (Prairie Smoke Road), and things are taking off. Looking at doing some solo acoustic stuff as well. Having a blast! Find my band on Facebook, Instagram, X, and will be uploading some live stuff here on TH-cam soon.

I agree with that. The passion you have for music YOU like will shine brighter than playing the “mandatory’s”. Now, I am very much a people pleaser so I have many of them. But learning those can come after a solid 2-3 sets of what you are into.

How could you please everyone in the room? You give good advice. We play an eclectic mix of and most hang aound just to hear what's coming next.

When I set out to compile my song list years ago I wanted to offer a few songs from different genres since audiences are usually from different ages, culture etc, BUT I made certain that they were songs I loved playing. So I might do "Moon River" by Pat Boone and follow that with "Diamond Girl" Seals & Croft follow that with "Always on My Mind" Willie Nelson for example. My hope is that everyone comes away with something they enjoyed hearing but at the same time I myself love playing those songs.

I play solo guitar and voice, classic rock. But, I try to keep my crowd. Too much slow stuff like James Tayler and Simon & Garfunkel; I see people leave.
