To be avoided! The Tonal and other digital resistance machines do the same when motion is fast and weight is light. The main issue is that the cable can get a twist or even a knot in it, or can be abraded by going through the pullies off-axis, greatly limiting the cable life. Always care for the cables!
Hooooly, this is SO freaking cool. Currently I live in a condo that has a gym in it, but if I ever choose to move into a bigger place and lose easy access to a gym, I am 100% getting this. I'm so happy to know this exists lol. Love all the features
My husband is shopping for a new home weight system and I really want something like this. It looks super cool. I do worry about what happens if the company were to go out of business (Sorry Speediance folks, that probably doesn’t feel like the world has much confidence in you!) and would my machine still work. But it looks awesome and the (small amount of) physical space it requires is definitely a plus!
Check out Votra I by Beyond Power. No subscriptions. And, use it on any existing gym you own or use. You own it. There is no subscription or ever will be one. It is like a 20 lb. portable weight system with resistance up to 200 lbs. that does exactly what this device does.
I know that it isn’t a subscription model, but what happens if they go bankrupt and their backend servers go down? Is everything local or it is then bricked?
It looks like there's a free weight mode for when the wifi isn't working, so theoretically if the company went under that would be what you'd have. Though I also wonder what their tech support and warranty support is like.
I'm a huge Tonal fan, as my personal trainer has one, and his single membership covers ALL his clients! While the Tonal hardware itself is slightly cheaper than Speediance (due to Tonal's Black Friday Sale), the monthly membership adds $720/year, which is just silly, especially since the extended warranty support cost is ON TOP of that, rather than included. Tonal has priced itself right out of my personal market. Tonal wins on its smaller stored space and the huge adjustable range of its arms, but I'm not sure how much real-world value those differences provide, as the portability of the Speediance may offset those items. One clear mechanical advantage is the Tonal arms can touch an 8' ceiling, which allows for a maximal useful exercise volume, though again I'm not sure I really need to do overhead standing pull-down exercises. Edit: Plus, the wall-mounted Tonal is probably not for renters! Speediance certainly looks good, but I'll need to dig deeper before I'm able to more completely compare it to Tonal (and Vitruvian and Oxefit) based on cost, hardware and exercise. That said, I do tend to buy things Ali tells me to buy. I already got the toe separators and the Saunabox. Could Speediance be next? Edit: My personal benefits from digital lifting (not specific to Speediance or Tonal): 1) I'm no longer afraid to go full-range with greater weight, especially as I've aged (I'm 68). For example, going deeper on my chest presses has given me "pec wings" next to my armpits, plus filled in that annoying upper pec dip below my collar bone. I've been lifting (as part of strength training) for 26 years, and those two areas nagged me until I started using a Tonal 3 years ago. Yes, that's what my trainer and I call "vanity muscle", but if I'm gonna work for it, I'd like it to show! 2) I have worsening back problems (degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis, scoliosis), yet I'm still able to do deadlifts and RDLs due to the machine actively helping to keep me safe. Having a strong back slows down all my symptoms, and digital lifting makes it possible. Having a control button on my finger or on the bar/handle makes working out alone MUCH safer. 3) The digital lifting machine is ALWAYS CHALLENGING ME! As I get stronger and sets get easier, the next time I do that lift it will automatically be kicked up a notch. The damned machine knows me far too well, and I get to reap the benefits! 4) No handling plates. I can't overemphasize how quickly one bad lift, twist or reach can wreck my back. I'll do similar movements in the context of a specific exercise, but not in the less-controlled environment of moving iron around. Plus, having to reset iron between lifts means cycling between different exercises takes longer. I want to spend my time working out with only minimal breaks (to stay warmed up), without fear or ruining my back or crushing my fingers. That I can pre-program specific lifts in a specific order means digital lifting is a huge win for the flow and focus of my workouts.
Yoga garbage?! Lol so much yoga hate on this channel 😆.. I seem to remember you saying in a video once that if you hate a thing that means you probably should be doing it more.. video idea for you.. Ali does yoga every day for a month.. and since I know you like to take things to the extreme, why not do HOT yoga?! Either way, thanks for being such a great inspiration 🔥🧘🏻♀️🥰💜
I also hate doing yoga, for a bunch of reasons. It's great that other people do it, it's just not for me. BUT all that being said, I would absolutely watch Ali do yoga every day for a month.
It would be interesting to know how, over time, the difference between moving against the magnetic resistance of the GM vs having to work against the shifting mass as it is moved of TG effects your form, and if it could cause a problem: That clean and jerk did not look safe!
Great machine! I don't think you want to completely skip the free weights. As you mentioned there's peripheral strength gain as you load and unload the bar, grip and move the dumbells, etc. I've noticed that if I stick to machines, I end up mostly being able to do the machine's limited movement but it doesn't transfer as well to similar lifts (e.g. machine curls don't keep up with bar curls don't keep up with dumbbell curls. Double that for legs. That's me, anyway. :))
Agreed, and also the iron I own is an investment, it's gone up in value at a faster pace than gold, it doesn't depreciate whereas this device most certainly will. Having said that, it does look amazing
Search assault bike, I don’t know the lore behind “consent bike”, but probably something to do with being the opposite of an assault in some scenarios?.. 🤷🏻♂️
Tonal user for the last 3 years here. You couldn't pay me to trade for a Speediance. I gladly pay the subscription because Tonal continues to add challenging content for all levels and at a high rate. I lifted at a gym regularly for 30 years prior to Tonal. Tonal programming, coaching and accountability changed my life!
If I had $3K to spend on exercise equipment it would be original Nautilus. This is totally unnecessary for the segment of the population that it's made for. They can get everything they need w/out spending a penny, but if they wanted some equipment under a grand easy. For most way under. And a good place to start would be a trap bar which does a lot more than 2 exercises, and is very safe for lone home trainers.
Exactly... by why not just buy the resistance part of the device instead of they whole gym setup... That is what the Votra I by Beyond Power does. No subscriptions. You own it. It is basically 200 lbs weight set that weights 20lbs.
@@joemoya9743 I dont have a home gym. Just some smaller weights. If I buy Voltra I, do I need two of it to do the same exercices than on the GM? I am reflecting about how to have a homme gym in a very small condo.
@ I saw a guy in the gym with something similar, he mentioned it was for his diabetes. I believe there are people who reuse this technology to try and optimize their workout somehow
The cable whipping on the Olympic lifting was CRAZY!

No WiFi or subscription is a huge factor, but a pro model that could go up to 500 or so would capture a much larger market.

I came in to comments to find answer on the same question:)
Dumb gyms ftw

As someone in my 50s, I like that this looks like it would be easier on your joints than traditional weights. :)
My issue is durability. Yes it's more versatile but all it takes is a small electronic or software glitch and it's just wall decoration.

Thanks for the review Ali!
Wow I want one so bad, that seems so amazing!
Am I one of the odd ones out who grew up with a Nordic Trak in their house?
Excellent video pally, but i gotta ask -- exactly what is a: *_"Consent Bike"_* ? I think you -sad- said that on 17:44 🖖
Search assault bike, I don’t know the lore behind “consent bike”, but probably something to do with being the opposite of an assault in some scenarios?.. 🤷🏻♂️
She doesn't like the assault bike as an object, or in name, so she renamed it to the consent bike to make it seem less bad.
@@smarmasaur Thanks for the context my dood.🧠

We have a Tonal and its the best home gym we have owned.
18:53 glute routine video? Mine need some waking up, show us the best glute routine please
Kudos that you use a 45lb diameter bar 💪
15:58, it took me to here to notice your shoes.
What if you are over 6 foot looks to small to me, what is the maximum length of travel
Bummer, they won't honor your discount code.
TG wins out for me. The 220lb max is too low. HOWEVER, if I were back in an apartment or a condo, that would be great for the space savings.
6:22 don’t know what u saying to fast 😂😂😂
We need a six month review
Hmmmm interesting
Drawbacks are not bad? The weight limit is sooooo much lower than your max for deadlift
Looks like a 95% Tonal UI copy, the rest looks a bit janky, but I sure they can sell some.
Badass

one more argument for the monster. no chance of breaking/pinching/destroying fingers when moving/changing plates

The machine is intelligent enough to know that "Crossfit" has a really bad fatigue/ benefit ratio and athletes are prone to injury. 😅
SMART is already old fashioned, now it has to be called AI to popular.
Nice😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😊😊😊😮😮
Their website keeps crashing. Doesn't bode well when you are looking to buy a machine with so much technology. Just sayin. 😮
No. Just buy analog weights and get on with training.
YMMW this will kill someone. The lawsuits are gonna be crazy.
Question… what is that white thing on your tricep. Is it a workout thing or a medical thing 😮😮
I'd wager a blood sugar monitor

This would have been perfect for all the garbage people who wouldn’t take the Covid lockdown seriously just because it impacted their gym routine
