All of the meals are vegetarian so the ration could be used internationally regardless of local food taboos. The only animal product used is limited dairy.
it's also because the food in this ration is easily digestible and can be given to malnourished people without having to worry about blood sugar levels
The HDR used to be yellow until 2001. some cluster munitions have bomblets in the same yelllow color, prompting the US to switch to the Salomon color for the HDR.
I actually really like these rations. I use them for camping all the time. The lack of beverages is the only thing I don't care for. Usually just bring along some freeze dried coffee and then these are golden.
@Butterworthdasyrup try the barley stew with the red pepper flakes. I usually boil the entrees. Otherwise, the rice dishes taste kind of gross and dry.
Some pop tarts can be dry - need some water to go with it. Even the ones from the store can have a slight greasiness on the outside of silver packet. Must be a manufacturing packing thing. Actually everything sounds good. Not the calories Americans are used to eating.
I would never have thought of putting peanut butter and jelly/jam on the tortilla… I would have added it to the cookies and had the tortillas with the stew 😅
I’d boil the mains just so it’s better tasting, show initiative in improving the meals. I carried different spices and condiments in the field back in my 29th Division days. I loved those MCI days. I came in towards the end of MCIs and the transition to the early MREs. Pork patty was my favorite.
My Spidey senses are tingling, drill must be close. Foscatto got a haircut, and your Stache appears 670-1 compliant. Haha! Keep up the fun content you two. 👍
As others have pointed out, it's not a fighting ration, so first of all, a lot less calories, no need for isotonic drinks, extra sugar and all the goodies you get in your usual MRE. No need for TP, "garbage" bags, water purification and so on. Those packs are usually handed out with bottled water from pallets if it's required. Similar with it being vegetarian at a minimum to be able to be "used" in as many situations as possible and not having the india pack, middle east pack, and so on. Reflective foil packaging is not an issue, because the people that should be getting them should not be trying to hide in bushes. Lastly, "good" food, especially the ones reminding soldiers of "home cooking", is good for morale (note the WW2 ice cream barges for example), which is an issue you'd want to cover when supplying frontline troops, much less of a concern when feeding refugees.
Yeah, makes sense. If I ever ended up as refugee (god, hope not, a lot would've had to go wrong in west and central Europe then :D) I'd prolly be very happy to have such meals and be fed even if comparably below military MRE standards regarding some taste or additives. It's funny how a lot suddenly becomes magic the more (literally) starved you are. In daily use and not counting camping etc, who'd really normally eat this? When you are getting hungry and got nothing else, it must seem like heaven. Or at least decent. A goodie bag, a happy meal :D This is the face you make when you get/eat it: :D
I keep a couple cases of these in the basement "just in case". Mostly because of the halal thing. I was not aware that there were US made Halal MREs and, thanks to you, We have a couple cases of those inbound. :)
tbf it kinda makes sense given how likely these aren't just handed out during domestic disasters (I think/guess? IDK I'm not American) but how you can also use them in humanitarian aid abroad, some of that likely going on in regions where they have halal dietary needs. Then it's apparently the most easiest or compatible to use or hand out.
I don't know anything about these rations, but I would imagine they are intented to supplement whatever food, spices etc. might still be available. And while you can eat it the way it comes I imagine often you will be able to add some spices or whatever you still have to make it taste better.
I agree, the episode with you and Lord of Lips was a fantastic episode. The story about the kids larping in the field was hilarious. I don't know anyone with stories like that, so it's fun to hear them
I cant tell if this is a joke incinuating they immediately wanted to kill you after trying them or that the insurgents commonly rob the people they swear they protect because either makes complete sense
not having drinks or heater makes more sense if you think that when those ration are needed, it won't be in a survival in the wild setting and more supplies route innaccessible or famine. Communities will have access to water and fire most of the time. Water purification tablets might be good just in case
My grandfather was a POW in ww2 and was on his way back to the United States of America. They were standing in line with a beer mug on the ship. Given egg nog because it was like a protein shake back then.
The best part about these is, while you get less options and more calories and typically only food products they are usually 50% of the price of the full MRE meals
The calories are based on the consumer's needs. US Military MRE for 1 meal is based on how many calories your average infantryman having to fight/work/whatever in full pack, weapon(s), ammo, body armor, etc needs to maintain their body weight. The humanitarian 24 hr meal assumes your typical civilian/refugee who isn't lugging around 100 pounds of weight with them. A technical rope technician friend, who's 6' tall and 170 pounds of amazon warrior woman body, consumes about 5000-5500 calories a day, and she's not only potentially lugging a hundred pounds of climbing gear and rope, she's also having to ascend/descend on those ropes from wind turbines, cliff faces, off the sides of buildings or under bridges.
What's the difference between a chick pea and a garbanzo bean? Politicians dont pay 100 bucks to have a garbanzo bean on their face. Sorry i couldn't help myself. I'll see myself out.
Bland taste and no meat means that it can be used and eaten by many different cultures and religions and shipped out quickly to where it's needed. Perhaps the lack of heater and other things is because in some places they can't read and understand what's printed on the packages.
Glad you noticed that the US tries to force P&J sandwiches (and breakfast pop-tarts???) on everyone, even shell-shocked Arabic refugees who have no idea what it is. I'm pretty certain the tortillas would be used with the main meals. On the other hand, they are a great source of protein and energy. Not so sure about the empty calories and sugar in the rest of the items though. I guess the drink powders rely on a source of safe fresh water, which may not always be available, or would need to be boiled first.
Well, water would be the most important food of all, so water purification tablets would make a lot of sense in war or disaster zones. And basically there is no difference between civilian and military use of water - everyone needs it. "Empty calories" is a luxury when you are hungry or starving - the carbs get your blood sugar up quickly, and the cookies are whole grain/oatmeal, and the breakfast foods are high in fat for longer term satiety. To me this makes a lot of sense given the use case, and this is not meant to be your main source of food for a long time.
My wife still can't understand how I can eat anything without complaining about the taste. I need the calories, I'll fix my taste later with some alcohol.
That's heartbreaking to hear this junk is better than what they're feeding our military boys. Lentils and the other stuff is horrible over salted poisonous garbage. I wouldn't feed that stuff to my dog and expect him to survive it...and if I were starving, my dog would be the life saving option, not that chemical ridden trash.
I am fairly good at eating strange food, including the samples they served during bugfest in Raleigh. But I draw the line at eating food cold; I would sit and dutifully heat my food no matter the circumstances. I guess that’s why I never served in the military.
Is there a gofundme or something where we can contribute toward getting Josh some grippers so he can open things with his bare hands?
😂 You've made my day
🤣

Yes surprisingly good and filling

Good bye had me laughing pretty hard Tyler.

I think the HDRs do a great job of providing basic nutritional needs. The menus are tasty and who doesn’t like a pop tart!!!
i dont know why but i love these videos
I‘m a 40y old woman from Germany, I wasn’t in the army or something, I really like to cook…
AND I love these videos 😂
I would never have thought of putting peanut butter and jelly/jam on the tortilla… I would have added it to the cookies and had the tortillas with the stew 😅
Wow bonus episode! So excited these are the best!

Y'all should've canoed off camera. Also love the outro music, reminds me of Miles Davis

Appreciate that my friend!

@@DeliahAyala.2.14.91. 100% agree and episode with him and doughnut talking LE stuff would be amazing 🤩
@@Butterworthdasyrup dude your mre reviews are hilarious the banter between you and your co host are great I appreciate you my good sir
Every time we handed out any rations to civilians in Iraq, we would find them in the possesion of insurgents within a day.
I cant tell if this is a joke incinuating they immediately wanted to kill you after trying them or that the insurgents commonly rob the people they swear they protect because either makes complete sense
Beautiful fresh haircuts, fellas!
I appreciate your attempt at being normal :D

Josh has been deeply traumatised by Korean hot dogs...
😂😂😂

Those are chickpeas aka garbanzo beans which is what they make hummus from.
Hmmm they def each had a black spot on them like a black eyed pea. Totally different taste and texture than a chickpea
they are definitely black eyed peas
That was enjoyable, thank you very much ♡ - I wonder, if I may ask, what are you doing with the opened food? Like the peas in tomatosauce? Best wishes
I think you are thinking of a First Strike Ration.... possibly a MORE . Either way, it's a great video.
Thanks!
5:00 haha!!! That boy
Love your vids! Just a heads up u forgot to put the link in the description of where we can buy some to try! ¨̮
Ooooo good catch! Thank you sir!
there's no heater or water purifier because kids can get their hands on them
Still waiting on the scoreboard

Note there is a lot of easily digestible sugars in the mains and man they need spice bad.
Too bad you don't have multiples of all of them and you could take things from different countries and create your favorite 24 hour MRE.

it's also easier to digest and can help elevate blood sugar levels back to normal
I wait to say my number with yall… and this time I said 65 too!!!

Those peas look like they're in a melted cheese sauce 😅 If you didn't know it was tomato sauce 😂

Try humanitarian meal 2

How did this 12 year old get in the army
Oh boy, just to look at ...no for me.
