  • I show how to use a drain snake on a kitchen sink drain.
    A power drain snake is an excellent tool for clogged drains, it will easily unclog any buildup of food, grease or soap.
    You can rent one at any rental places. If you are in the Chicago area, I go to Jack's Rental. You can see what they have at www.jacksrental....

    Important that when backing it out not to spin in reverse of the cable winding except for short durations because it can damage the cable. If it gets stuck on something it may be needed to go in reverse spin but overall try to be spinning forward almost all the time.

    I Bought That Exact Snake Made By General Tools From A Lady On Ebay Years Ago For $50.00 . She Said The Snake Was Out of The Drum And They Could Not Figure Out How To Install it Back In The Drum. When I Received it The Unit Looked Like It Was Used Maybe One Time. It Looked New. They Or Someone Prob. Used It And Pulled All 25 Feet Of The Snake All The Way To The End And Came Out Of The Drum. Easy Install And I Have What Cost Over $200.00 For $50.00 And I Get to Keep It For The Future And Not Have To Return It To A Rental Store. 👍

    One piece of advice i have for everyone, when using a drill for more torque don't overtorque the auger! My auger locked up and wouldnt spin anymore. I had to spend another 30 to buy a new one

    don't do what I did occasionally --- drain the trap into a bucket, take trap off, then empty the bucket into the same sink .... take your time, and let the machine do the work, don't force it, or it can get knotted up inside the waste pipe, and then you will have a job, to get it out.
    keep a bigform bucket to collect all the crap, which come out on the way back.and flicks it all over the place, before these were made, we had manual sani snakes, not in a drum, but loose 45 foot long, you need two people to operate it, one feeding it in, and the other keeping ithe tension and straight and turning the drive handle, or it would twist up into knots, wear gloves, or the stink will stay in your hands, for quite a while..

    Thought this was going to help. It did help with basic technique, but in my old house the snake wants to go up the vent instead of down the drain. :(

      Carl Seiler not sure if ya got it yet,but it’s helpful to put a bend in the end of the cable and spin it ,if ya can ,with the hook down when ya hit the tee. Can be very difficult if the vent tee is far away from the trap arm. Good luck

    I have been a drain cleaner for several years. this type of cleaner is very hard to use. Use a cleaner that has a foot pedal. you push on the pedal with one foot. you can then run the cable with 2 hands. be sure to put a bend at the tip of the cable, about and inch, 45 degrees. that will help getting around corners. it is an old plumbers trick. most plumbing companies really don't use this type of cleaner anymore. what use to do when i started, i would lay a mat on the floor, put the driill down, and with one hand you press the button and the other hand push the cable down the pipe but my company stopped using this type of maching for a reason.

    Thank you, rented the tool at Home Depot and did exactly what you described (~ $35.00 CDN for 4 hours). My problem at first was that water was draining slowly when draining the sink full of water. It quickly deteriorated to the point that it was backing up when faucet is running. Gave it few full sink drains after I completed the work with the snake. It now all works as it should.

    I wish i could add a photo for my problem. P drain cleaned. the problem is the sewer line it runs into a L shaped pipe with a tiny section on top..I'm guessing that's something about pressure. well my snake hits this section and won't go down. 80s mobile home style.

    • @judywedgeworth2250
      @judywedgeworth2250 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      p trap drains into an Equal Tree (pipe/drain) ...the top the equal tee has this (I think that's the pressure or something) ...but I finally got the snake passed the bend of the Equal Tee and further down the drain...I don't think I loosened enough of the gunk...still a slow drain. I've used crystal stuff in it, gel, foam, industrial (after I found out those are big a big no no), not to worry I didn't use them all at once. I'll keep working the clog.

    Please help. I have a kitchen sink clog. Has a disposal next to it. I get my auger about 10 feet in and it's stuck. I have to pull it back out. Super slow draining. I have a septic system. I saw a video about closing off the kitchen sink drain, running half a sink full of hot water on the disposal side then running the disposal. The pressure forces water up in the basement sink...a little wet bar. It doesn't go down that sink and i have to wet vac it out. Does that mean my clog is below the basement sink?

    I have tried using a non-powered auger on my sink drain, but I can't seem to clear it. I know the clog has to be within 20 feet of the sink because another drain Ts into it at that point and that sink drains fine. I have fed the entire 25 foot auger into the drain and it seems to hit nothing. How is this even possible? Am I doing something wrong?

    • @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel
      @FIXITHomeImprovementChannel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      amargarita Hi, is your drain moving slow or not at all?

    • @amargarita3155
      @amargarita3155 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for abandoning you. It was moving very very slowly. The 3/8" auger just seemed to be bending and twisting around inside the pipe. I found a screw-in plug further down the pipe in the basement and from there, I would have a straighter run of pipe to deal with. I went back to the store and got a tool that was not a flexible tube but a fairly rigid metal strip. I used this and still did not hit anything. But I must have moved the clog because now the sink that drained OK before was stopped up too. I was about to give up when I tried a plunger on the second sink and finally it unclogged with a whoosh!

    My back up water is in my kitchen sink. Single floor house but I have a basement, the bathroom drain of shower and toilet and sinks seems fine. So at kitchen sink, I used a 15' snake to no avail, and also enzyme powder to no avail. The clog is apparently past 15 feet... I bought a 25' snake for $7 and will try that. Please comment suggestions.

      +jeremy r Hi, do you have trees near where the main drain goes into the street or into your septic system? You may need to rod out into the main drain.

      +jeremy r perhaps your roof vent is clogged or blocked by a debris or birds nest

      +jeremy r it needs a vent pipe, that is why it is not draining.
