  • In this video we tell you about Donald Campbell and his boat Bluebird.
Donald Campbell was a British speed record breaker in the mid-20th century, famous for his efforts in land and water speed records. He notably broke the world land speed record in 1964 and the world water speed record multiple times, ultimately meeting a tragic end during a water speed record attempt in 1967.
Bluebird K7 was the hydroplane speedboat used by Donald Campbell in his pursuit of water speed records. Campbell set seven world water speed records in K7 between 1955 and 1964.
Bluebird is now housed in the Ruskin Museum in Coniston in the Lake District.

So cool to see that lego model again, That model was made over a period of about 6 months by my daughter who donated it to the museum in April last year as she always wanted it to be on display with K7 when she returned to Coniston. She also visited the workshop with me many times where the boat was restored and did some work with the team. Top video, Really enjoyed it

Thankyou. It is really good to hear from people who have a connection to a video that we put out. The Lego model was very good. You are so lucky to have had a personal link to not only K7 but also her new home. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to let us know.

Thanks David. We have been waiting for so long for Bluebird to finally arrive back in Coniston. As I said I got interested because of my brothers scrapbook.
      Have a good weekend

That was brilliant! Thanks for sharing. I confess that speed was my life, when younger. Mostly, my greed for speed was on alpine skis and telemark gear. But also on downhill decents on my old mountain bike. Probably why I am able look back at that time in my life is that I eventually accepted that I had to slow down some. I was definitely a wee bit reckless back then. Donald Campbell was way above my pay grade in his pursuit of speed. What an amazing man and family. I'm so pleased you two were finally able to visit Coniston and the museum. The Bluebird is a remarkable boat. But I confess that I rather covet that old Land Rover. What a beauty! Have a loverly weekend and week! See you next Friday. Cheers!

Keith loved skiing in Switzerland when he was younger. He tried to talk me in to it but I like my knees. Lol.
I used to enjoy racing downhill on my ATB but we haven't had the bikes out in years.
Donald and his Dad were true heroes back in the day that's for sure.
      See you next Friday.

I?see where you are coming from with the shape.
Not sure about the toy. It wasn't on the grave a couple of years ago so I doubt it is the real one.

I know this is about Donald Campball (very interesting I remember it happening) but you also mentioned an interest in The Titanic, my Great Aunt was betrothed to someone who worked on and went down with the Titanic his surname was Dodd and he was from Crewe, she never married. For some reason he also had a photo of my Grandmother her sister which is now somewhere at the bottom of the ocean. He sent my Aunt a letter on Titanic headed paper from Southampton saying he would "be glad to get off this accursed ship". Sadly the letter was destroyed after she died well into her 80's by my other Great Aunt. So it can not be proven, I did not see the letter myself but my Dad had seen it, so I have no doubt in my mind that its true. Such a shame it was destroyed it should have gone to the museum as it seems to confirm reports that many of the sailors disliked the ship, if a documentery I watched a few years back is to be believed.

Hiya Jan. That is fascinating. What a shame the letter isn't around any more. We love hearing stories and facts from people who have a connection to things we have an interest in. We really want ro get ro the museum in Belfast one day. Our Dads were both in the Royal Navy and both said to us separately that sailors have premonitions and feelings about ships that feel wrong in some way. Thankyou for telling us.
