LOVED the all star band but John Sykes and his wall of sound should've been on guitar for the '87 tour because without Sykes' song writing & incredible playing on Whitesnake "1987" COVERDALE wouldn't have had that monster album. I'd put the first Blue Murder album up against WS'87 any day! It's an incredible album with excellent songs and insane guitars and vocals from John Sykes,Tony Franklin on fretless bass and Carmine Appice on drums. A fk'ng masterpiece!

Vivian shouldn't have been expected to be in a situation in which he was not to have his creative contributions recieved or capitalized on. The first 3 Dio albums are killer ( yeah, even Sacred Heart) because of what he brought to the table. Kind of wierd that he went on to Def Leppard to be...under utilized.
I am definitely into The Last in Line band that he has been doing over the last few years, like having a guitar hero come home.

The only possible reason for joining Leppard would be the money. They're not really a credible rock band... although they were once. I never thought he was right for them, right from the word go, when I saw them play the Freddie Mercury tribute gig in 92. He's far too good for them.

    • @rugdnit911

He’s definitely under utilized, but he’s in a band where they take care of each other. At some point you have to choose a better situation and a steady paycheck. He has his side projects to feed his creative outlet. Met him a few times and seems like a pretty genuine guy.

I was fortunate enough to see this lineup live when Whitesnake opened for Motley Crue on Motley's Girls ×3 tour @ The San Diego Sports Arena. I bought a Whitesnake jersey shirt instead of a Motley Crue shirt. My uncle was a rocker and took me to all of shows starting in 82/83 with KISS Creatures Of The Night Tank Tour w/Motley opening in San Diego. I was only in 5th grade for the KISS show. It planted the seed for the love I have for most genres of rock music.

I think the band could have remained relevant for much longer had Sykes been in the band for all the post 87 records. There might have been a perfect chemistry between him and Coverdale that could have produced at least a few more classic records. It seems like after Blue Murder didn't go very far, John lost his purpose in life and then stopped doing music altogether.

    • @endtyme1345
      @endtyme1345 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

John Sykes didn't stop doing music. After Blue Murder he recorded several records under his name, none of them successful. He was about to release a new record somewhere between 2020/21 but (still) delayed. There's a couple of new songs in his YT page as advances. Nothing to die for honestly.

Vivian has been with a more popular as well as revenue giant called "Def Leppard" for 30 years with a higher salary --- This was a blessing for him. Believe that. In addition, I have always adored Whitesnake for a litany as well as plethora of reasons...However, David has some issues. Yes, it is his band, we get it and how Sykes was treated during the 1987 fall out, was all the evidence needed. David and Sharon Osbourne--- two legends in their own minds.

Getting rid of guitarists seems to be a career ender for several bands. You have Ozzy getting rid of the Blizzard od Ozz band which included a main songwriter and then Jake E Lee. He made No More Tears and then that's it for Ozzy. Dio got rid of Vivian and his career was shot after that. He actually made a great record with Rowan but then got rid of him. Whitesnake found lighting in the bottle with Sykes and then threw it all away. Nothing good happened after 87, what a shame.

After No More Tears came the grunge era, which practically none of the 70s/80s rockers survived/thrived in. Aerosmith is the only one of those bands I can think of who still had huge records in the grunge era and beyond. Others lost their careers entirely or remained a good touring draw but didn't sell records.

As a guy who loved Slide it In and the self-titled 1987 record, I can't for the life of me, understand all these years later, why Slip of The Tongue was such a huge dissapointment. Every single musician on that record was top notch. The lyrics were kinda lame and uninspired, Steve Vai's guitar tone was over-processed to death and sounded very thin, and considering Adrian is great guitar player, the song arrangements were nothing special, except for Judgement Day and a couple others. Slip of the Tongue was definitely a case of the whole NOT being greater than the sum of the parts. And to be honest, except for the rabid Fan Boys that worship at the Coverdale Altar no matter HOW many truly mediocre albums David has released since 1987, Whitesnake never regained anything close to their glory days in the 80s. And that's a huge shame considering the immense talent of Reb Beach and Tommy Aldridge.

    • @MrMatthiasSchneider

You're right. My words exactly. That "Slip Of The Tongue" era & Tour was truly GROTESQUE. Steve Vai music & style doesn't have ANYTHING to do with Whitesnake. For some strange reason he was excellent in Alcatrazz & DLR. But it's not ALL his fault. "Slip Of.." besides an enormous brilliant production it's an sterile album. Vandenberg compositions were sh3te. Vai tried to save that train wreck for a few moments but (still) that wasn't his album at first place.

Even on a very small local level, you cannot be nice and caring all the time. The classic singer versus guitar is initiated by volume wars. It's easy to crank the Marshall to 11. The vocal is limited to the feedback level of the room or stage. Hence the wars. As folks get older it doesn't get better. I would think after all the crap gigs and getting no where, the guys would appreciate the success. They were all killer. Wow, Dave's band. It was, but a revolving door, getting rid of guitarist's, I guess was the way to hog all the cash. Nothing more. Such great music in the begining.

Certain players just don't gel with each other. My humble opinion is I like John Sykes better as the only guitarist. He doesn't fit with a 2nd one in a band. Same with Vai. Vai and Vandenberg weren't a good match. Just listen to live at Donnington. Sounds like a mess.

Vivian seems like he spent some time being a poor sport. He left Dio because he wanted more money and more stardom. Instead he got to find out the hard way the grass ain't always greener. Maybe he made more money idk.

More money? How about some money. Dio was keeping it all. Would you be a chump and help write all of the songs while someone else kept all of the money? I know I wouldn't.

@@MrMatthiasSchneider idk what he was paid. Idk what the agreement was. If someone signed an agreement with you would feel bad they didn't like it later? Maybe you would. I don't have those details and one half of the party is dead. On another note, I wonder if you or I would know who Vivian Campbell is if RJD didn't put him on. Probably not.

Coverdale decided to write the next album with Adrian Vandenberg instead of Vivian Campbell and the album sucked. Whitesnake never really recovered from that.

I love Vivians playing and he seems a nice enough chap. But we have to excuse some of his paranoid and crybaby recollections that may not be true because he is Irish after all.
