I don’t think there is a debate. Since Lemieux’s career ended super early, we will never know exactly how good he would’ve been. I, personally, believe that offensively, Lemieux is better in every way but Gretzky is better when it comes to most other aspects.
Gretzky could elevate his teammates games, like Paul Coffey, Jari Kurri, Glenn Anderson, and Mark Messier. Heck, even Grant Fuhr was getting assists! No one can compare to Wayne Gretzky, not even Mario Lemieux. If you count his WHA season, Gretzky would have almost 3000 career points in the pros.
Predicting the Red Wings in only year 4 of the Yzerplan winning the Cup proves how gimmicky this is (but if they do, you can laugh at me all you want. LGRW)

Lemieux's career goals per game is a 0.75, well ahead of Gretzky's 0.60, and his career assists per game is a 1.13, second only to Gretzky's 1.32. they are the only two players with above a 1.5 points per game for their career with Gretzky coming in at 1.92 and Lemieux at 1.88, but it's also worth noting that at the time of Lemieux's first retirement he was the only player to ever retire with over a 2 point per game career record, which is why the hall of fame waived their usual 3 year waiting period and inducted him immediately.
@@xXHisLastWalkXx if you compare Wayne to Mario at 745 games played (Marios first retirement) Wayne had 1837 points in 774 games for a 2.37 ppg average and a .82 goals per game average vs Lemieux who had 1494 points (388 less points than Wayne in 29 less games played) for a 2.005 ppg average and a .82 goasl per game average (identical to Wayne). If you compare them at 915 games so (Marios second retirement) Wayne had 2142 points (first all time by a wide margin) and 718 goals in 925 games for a .77 goals per game average and a 2.31 Ppg average. Mario at 915 had 1723 points and 690 goals in 915 games for a .75 goals per game and a 1.88 ppg average. Meaning by the 900 games mark Wayne was better in both goals and almost half a point per game better overall. now look at Marios Even strength production. Wayne has 8 seasons with more EVP than marios single season best meaning all situations Wayne was BY FAR the better player. Mario scored 40% of his points on the powerplay 40 PERCENT! (701/1723) thats 8 more percent than Connor Mcdavid (who is called a PP merchant) Wayne has more EVP 5v5 at 1818 than mario has career points and has more than double marios EVP production while not playing double Marios games.
@@thebullfighter6733 I get all of that, and we could also talk about the difference in eras and how even Gretzky will tell you it was easier to score when he was putting up those 200+ point seasons, but it's just worth noting that the two of them were truly in a league of their own. Lemieux is the only player to ever scratch at 200 points besides Gretz with a career high of 199, and would have hit it had it not been for cancer in 92-93 (160 points in 60 games for 2.67 ppg, third highest all time behind Gretzky's 2.69 and 2.77), they together hold at least the top 10 spots in nearly every single season scoring category both by total and average, the list goes on. don't get me wrong, I absolutely understand the argument that Gretz was better, and it's hard to disagree with that notion, but to say that Lemieux wasn't of at least comparable greatness to the great one just isn't true. of all the greats to ever play the game, there's a massive gap between the two of them and the rest of the pack.

Mario played 427 or 45% of his career in the 80s, played 318 games in the 90s from 90-91 to 96-97 and 170 games in the 200s. So he nearly played more games in the 80s than the 90s and 2000s combined. He was also more available per game out of the 5 years in the 2000s than he was in the 90s. Don’t get me wrong Mario’s 160 in 60 is one of greatest seasons in hockey second maybe only to the 50 in 39 season by Gretzky, but by the numbers he was never on pace to beat Gretzky. Mario’s numbers at 1500 games would have also declined farther than his 2.05 to 1.88 at the same games played he would have likely finished with a 1.5-1.6 ppg. The more you play the harder it is to maintain numbers. I love both players but I think the fact that Wayne’s ppg numbers are higher than Mario’s with 500 more games played is actually more impressive for Wayne than it is to say they were close.

Wayne has 8 of the top 10 EVP season with 1-7 in his name and Mario only getting 100 evp 1 time in his career and Wayne scoring over 100 5v5 points 10 times. If we had per 60 stats back then, Mario wouldn’t have even been remotely close to Wayne all situations.

Do you sim with high scoring? If not what do you use, I’ve never seen a player get 200+ points before.
Even with high scoring I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player hit even 160 points before in any of my franchise modes.
That just perfectly shows that simulations and "what if" calculations have nothing to do with real life.
What settings did u get to break 200 points

Gretzky was one of the greatest players, but to put it in perspective. Messier won two cups without Gretzky, Gretzky won 0 cups without Messier.
