Swimming in a quarry can be dangerous for many reasons, including:
    Depth and cold water
Quarries can be very deep and cold, which can cause muscles to weaken, shock, or hypothermia.
    Hidden hazards
Quarries can contain submerged plants, machinery, car wrecks, ledges, and tunnels that can drag you under, trap you, or impale you. These obstacles can be hard to see until you're already in the water.
    Pollution
Quarry water can contain rubbish, toxic algae, and other pollutants that can irritate your eyes and skin, cause stomach problems, and lead to fungal infections and rashes.
    Electric currents
Quarries can have dangerous electric currents that can be deadly underwater.

Why it is dangerous to swim in quarries:
1.) water temperatures: quarries can be very cold which can quickly lead to hypothermia.
2.) depth: they can be very deep but the depth ranges also change dramatically.
3.) unseen hazards: Quarries can contain abandoned machinery, car wrecks, underwater ledges, and sharp rocks.

On the way back because we couldn’t go up on the buoy and the water was soo cold, I got bad cramps in my legs, and I couldn’t call out to my friends, they were almost back to the shore. So I used what my mother told me “if you ever get cramps in placid cold water - float. It will keep you on the surface that is warmer and use your arms to swim back to the shore. So I did and survived. It wasn’t before I was almost back at shore my friends saw that something was wrong.

So basically water has currents right and normally that’s not a problem to swim in when it’s a lake or pool or something but what happens in an abandoned quarry is that with all the old equipment and sharp edges, and the generally weird shape of the lake means those currents move very erratically moving in and out of the equipment and that can cause it to spin and pull you down. It could also be something as simple as him getting his foot caught on something that then got shaken loose and drug him under.

Story is questionable. EDIT: Kid died from "a cramp". This had nothing to do with the quarry. 🙄

I was the first to jump and almost drowned due to the current. It was a miracle i made it back to land.
