  • An in depth video on installing a leisure battery on your camper van. This install is on a VW T6 and is a step-by-step guide but it’s he same principle for any camper van.

Thanks for the video. Did you choose the drivers side in order to balance the weight or the battery could be installed on either side? Other thing, do these led acid batteries release gas inside of the car?

Wish I'd seen this yesterday! I'm installing a CTEK any chance you could show the installation of one of those I have my cables through but not sure which fuse to use to get an ignition feed. Great vid

      Thanks David!
I believe your CTEK will be 25A (you can check on your box) so I’d be putting a 30A fuse in there so allow for the draw but will blow if there’s a fault and it goes up a lot more then you have protection.

Hi, Great vid cheers. Question… my T6 leisure battery is showing a low reading on my solar panel app. I’m very much suspecting a bad battery (not fitted by me). Once drivers seat is out, can I do a straight swap 90ah for a 110 (same dimensions) without having to do anything else? Cheers

Great video, what brand is the trickle charger ? And does that negate having to use a ctek or similar smart charger if I’m not using solar ?

Something like this would work best if you’re using solar or not. Charges quickly and is a fit and forget system.

Useful video thanks. What diameter is the cable please?

Hi Kev! There’s online calculators for the amount of amps you’re drawing and the distance so you might want to seek your own size for your system. The size I used in this video is 12AWG.

Is that 16mm cable and what make was that battery charger called please great video

It depends on the split charger that you fit on the cable size you need - a charger like the link below is 20a charge rate so something like a 6mm cable would be fine.

It's a great video, thanks for putting it up. I'm not an electrical person so please excuse my ignorance. When the leisure battery is installed how do you select it to run the items you want it to run and not drain the starter battery? I'd seen some VW forums and I thought they said that most of the internal electrics were run from a separate leisure battery circuit, but this doesn't seem to be the case here. Is it the relays that choose which battery powers the van electric circuit when the engine isn't running?
I'm thinking about a VW Caravelle (probably a T5) so that we use for family holidays, somewhere comfy to stay in long distances not to sleep in overnight. I was thinking about a leisure battery to power a TV and possibly some music for when we stop. Does the battery you showed fit under a Captain's seat?
    Many thanks
    George

You connect all your auxiliary items such as your tv to your leisure battery.
When the vehicle has started it will charge the leisure battery, when it’s turned off the starter battery is isolated so when discharging the leisure battery your starter battery remains full.

    Hi mate. Great video.
I’ve owned my Leighton T5 since new. It’s a 2013 so had it a good few years. A few months ago the internal spot lights stopped working. Then I noticed our leisure electrics stopped working.
Ours is also under the drivers seat.
I could go back to Leighton vans to get it sorted but it’s a 3 hour drive away. So if it’s a case of just swapping the battery I might have a go myself.
Do you think the internal spot lights not working is related to the leisure battery 🤷‍♂️?
I don’t have a clue about auto electrics.
I also found out tow bar electrics have stopped working also.
The camper was basically parked up for the whole of covid lockdown.
    So I think that’s what’s happened.
What’s the best leisure battery to get?
And is there a chance I could maybe re charge the one i have. Or would you say 8 years is a longtime and that it should be changed anyway.
I’m also considering just deleting the leisure battery all together and going with a jackery power box. 🤷‍♂️
Any help advice would be massively appreciated
Or if you are anywhere near Merseyside maybe you could take my van on as a job.
    😬

@@amac2137 ended up changing the leisure battery and a few other things. Then a few months later traded it for a crafter camper. I’ve had issues with the crafter. :(. Owned it a year now and only just getting somewhere with it. Miss the T5. But the crafter is good also. Well now it is anyway after spending £3000

Hi, Thanks for this video. Very helpful. Its the first battery install I've seen in video which include the heater ducting under the seat as well as the battery. This is setup I want to do but most other install videos put ina huge battery which leaves no space for the ducting, they've use AGM batteries too so they often lay them on their side. Could yo let me know the dimensions and spec of the battery you show in this video and whether the fixing plate for the battert might go 90degrees so a larger battery might fit along the side of the seat base rather than at the back of it as you have shown.
Thanks for the help. Good video!
    David

be really interested in battery make and model if possible - same reason as above. Thanks

Thanks a lot got your kind comment.
It’s a 65ah battery - you can get them anywhere online.
The reason it’s towards the rear of the seat is that the base is angled to there’s more height at the back of the seat than the front, you don’t want it to fowl on the seat when it’s moving.

Bossway thank you. How do you get on with the 65ah battery? I was just worried would be too small - what’s your experience. Thanks again for your reply.

Hi. I was wondering, do you ever attach a vent pipe to those leisure battery's? I believe mine is the same make as yours (superbatt)
I have a 2009 doblo so no worries about a fancy alternator, I just charge it from the split charge relay + solar. I was concerned it would vent gas due to the fast charge from the alternator? Thank you

I won't trust those thin cables at such a distance of more than 10amps.

    • @bosswayltd
      @bosswayltd  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

This cable is rated to 20amps. If you watch the whole video you’ll see I’m connecting up a trickle charger which charges at just 3amps so for this application it was more then enough but you’re correct, there’s online calculators for anyone who needs help in getting the correct gauge for the amps and distance they require.
The principle and route of cable I hope helps some people who are trying to fit them selves.
