Being the purist I am, and having sung Frederick in my "younger" days and having conducted a production of Pirates, I was thoroughly blown away with the creativity and talent in this production. I enjoyed every minute of this production. Bravo to all.
Im 38 now, and i remember watching this on a vhs that we recorded from sbs. I watched it so much for a while, maybe once or twice a week. Whenever someone says 'a paradox' i think in my head 'a most ingenious paradox' ahahahahaa. I didnt know why the pirate king would open his shirt to applause but i loved it nonetheless. This is my favourite musical, all of the cast are incredible from the leads to the supports to the backgrounds. Such an amazing spectacle. Love it.
I have watched many versions of Pirates of Penzance and I keep coming back to this. Really puts a smile on my face. RIP Jon English. The best Pirate King ever.
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face ..
OMG, thank you so much for uploading this!! I'm annoyed it took me so long to find a copy of this show that hasn't been chopped up. Super appreciate it! RIP Jon English, my forever purple-panted Pirate King.
This is the only EssGee show I have been able to purchase on DVD for region 1 DVD players. I desperately want The Mikado and HMS Pinafore, but they are not available for region 1

I’ve enjoyed it Sso much remembering my old days in the HUFS of Seoul Korea as one of the proud pirate king. Making gulf of Laughing thinking the good moment with all operetta colleagues.
The actress playing Ruth is the best I’ve ever seen. Nice singing voice ( with some changes to stay in her vocal range) and I can understand every word.
I’ve never seen this, nor heard of Jon English! Nor any of the players. This production is a joy, especially all the “liberties” taken - fully in the tradition of G&S, I believe. Thank-you so much!
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face ..
this performance was my childhood, I used to watch our VHS copy daily, sometimes multiple times a day! I don't quite know the numbers by heart anymore, but all the tunes are still in my head and when I hear them play i can't help but sing along! absolutely legendary performance by the whole cast, and the orchestra here too!
This is far and away the best version I have ever watched. An absolute joy from start to finish. Tried getting a copy on dvd but never managed one that wasn’t faulty or chopped. Thank you so very much for uploading this! 💛
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face ..
This whole show is fantastic. It made my childhood. Jon English dominates every single scene he is in, and in particular, 1:57:43 onwards CHANGED MY LIFE. It is an emotional anchor point I ALWAYS keep coming back to!!! Enjoy, all those who see it for the first time! It is almost 7 years since the passing of Jon English, who will always be to me, the One and Only, Pirate King. Jonathan James English 1949 - 2016
I have loved this Australian version of it since watching it repeatedly on VHS when I was very young. Thankyou for uploading it! I have it on DVD but no longer have anything that can play DVDs 😩
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face ..
Absolutely fantastic performance! This was my favourite movie as a kid and I was lucky enough to see it live in one of the final performances with Jon English and Simon Gallagher and it was spectacular. Best show I've ever seen!
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face ..
Absolutely loved this! I laughed all the way through. The direction, choreography, musical direction, and casting was perfect from beginning to end. The only problem was the quality of the recording being analogue, but I soon got used to it. It was a treat to watch and will definitely be watching it again!
Simple music can make you sing simple hug can make you feel better simple things can make you happy, i hope my simple Hello brings smile to your face ..
1:07:15 I love when they do a full acapella chorale for Hail Poetry. I've seen three versions this far and this is one of two that does it. It's so beautiful.

1:36:28 This comment must have been ad-libbed, because the actress playing Ruth obviously breaks character for a moment and laughs, unable to get the next line out. LMAO!!! 🙂 This is the first time I've noticed this. lol 🙂
Watched the musical live back in 2002 when I was in yr 10. Somehow my brother got his hands on the vhs in 2003 or 2004 and I watched it nearly daily while studying for my hsc. I got it on dvd and watched it everytime I studied between 2005 to 2011! So glad I’ve found it online 😊😊
Have only just found this, I was going to get the DVD out and watch it, but why bother if I can watch it on here. My son, daughter and I have seen the Jon English version 3 times, one of my favorite versions. R.I.P Jon. My son played Frederick to my Pirate King in a 2011 community theatre production, we had such great fun. As an early teenagers in the late 1950's, I used to meet Toni Lamond on a regular basis as her and her husband played 10 pin bowls at the same bowling alley as my family. We often played on adjoining lanes, sharing the scoring table..
This is the Version of Penzance I hold all others to. Aside the explicitly Australia References (i.e the Major Generals addition verse) for obvious reasons.
Mi respetos y admiración para Jon English y todo el elenco de esta divina producción. Gracias me hacéis muy feliz cada vez que vuelvo a esta maravilla.
The acapella is a gem, one of Britain's great secular hymns. This production is the best that wasn't an original. The harmonic changes are so inventive. Singing the original with their variations is fun. There has to be a good 70 minutes of riffing on the original. I usually find some variations pointless compared to the original. Sullivan was a gift to humanity, and Gilbert too. The primary character actors are fantastic.
There are actually supposed to be many sisters. You can also tell that half the pirates from Act 1 disappear because they play the police officers in Act 2
Jon English and Derek Metzger appear together in The Mikado. Then Jon and Simon (as well as Helen Donaldson) reappear together in H.M.S. Pinafore. With Derek Metzger appearing in a cameo for the final song as his character from The Mikado as well to bookend the trilogy

@@philipswilson It does, thanks. I 'm not sure this music is simple. If it was, everybody could write it. I guess it's difficult to make music looking simple.
It's hard to top Tim Curry on anything. Jon was a better Pirate King. The only other time I can say someone was better than Curry is when Curry replaced the late Raul Julia as Gomez in the Addams Family movies. I don't compare the Pennywise performances because they were portrayed so differently.
2:05:00 - Yes, Yes, the Major General Comes, and 2:07:00- Lullaby. And all these old troopers have bits of business they haven’t used yet … must trot them out!

Jon English is a legend, true performer right there..
Pirates of Penzance is only as good as the performers and direction and can easily fall on its face and this whole thing came out top notch!
From watching these TH-cam posts, I bought the DVD of this most fabulous production. I still can't believe that Jon English is no longer with us.
Amazing arrangements.
Jon English seems so happy to do the job !

I saw this live years ago and bought the dvd, blasted thing wont play anymore. I am pleased to find this copy. I will be going out to buy a new copy.
I think this is only version of this I’ve seen where the major general doesn’t have a moustache!

Okay, those encores for "Cat Like Tread" did a number on Jon, but Simon just kept. belting. out. that. tenor line!!
My siblings and I refer to it as the Conductor's Revenge.
I love how immediately afterwsrd, all of them are stumbling while walking, as though they are exhausted. And Simon's out of breath "not a word" line
What an amazing performance!!!
I have watched clips of this before. But now at last I can watch the whole full version.
I watched live in Hobart then on TV. Have the DVD, I love it!
This just brings such wonderful memories for me

No, it's completely live.
