Papua New Guinean here. PNG should not be considered as the 18th team. We’re simply not ready. NRL should either invest in or support the development system here instead.
yeah but this PNG team situation is gonna be an absolute cash bonanza for the entire league - $600M over 10 years from the federal government - because they’re looking to use a PNG team to curry geopolitical favour in the Pacific. I also think that PNG is fully capable of stepping up the plate and making an NRL team a huge success, because if anyone loves their football, it’s you guys, and you deserve to be rewarded for that
Football and politics… I reckon an NRL team prevents none of the risks that are emerging. It’s not the nrls role to get involved in that rubbish. Albo should invest the money is the army. Nrl expansion should be Perth, another NZ team, then TBD.
As a Papua New Guinean, i hope the NRL doesn't make us the 18th team. It's more political than what's good for the game. Would rather the game grow our grassroots footy and establish international pathways/academic footy scholarships. I'd rather the Bears get it

How's the interest over there with the PNG Hunters? If there was promotion and relegation (1 team from each cup plus another that wins a Cups playoff), every non NRL team or non NRL affiliate has a chance at playing NRL, last placed from the 3 drops to their cup and replaced. The only problem with that is how attractive would it be for an A-list talent to want to sign to a PNG franchise should we be promoted into first grade? Safety is paramount Another route could be if the NRL introduced something like what they do over in the NBA/NFL and divide the teams into conferences. I mean more teams, reduce the rounds, increase international games and then see where things go. Somewhat like Rugby Union. But that's in the long run.
Look guys. Right now, my country is no where near an NRL team. I think the Australian government is more worried about China's influence in the Pacific so they think pleasing our politicians by giving us an NRL team will sway us but honestly, its just a waste of time and Australian tax-payers money. I know the NRL won't be able to recoup their finances. Who can even afford tickets to watch a game? Life's rough over here and our currency is way more trash against the Aussie dollar. Either way, this application isn't based on the fact that we are ready. I mean. The passion of the game is definately here, but even our footy isn't up to standard. I'm from Perth but not a fan. No one cares in Perth. I guess as N Sydney hasn't been in the NRL does help. But if the new club goes on about the old Newtown and N Sydney traditions and heritage then people in Perth will drop off. In the Perth marketplace any talk of it being a Syd club originally needs to be really downplayd.
Perth has 2 AFL teams so it’s important to have another NRL team, back there with their own nickname. A lot of East coasters and Poms heading over there so they know footy. The nrl should be expanding and putting a team in Perth or Adelaide. As well as a team each in Darwin and Hobart. Neither Darwin or Hobart have winter sports teams and the nrl has spent over a decade taking games there and getting good turnouts, what’s the point of taking games there and not putting a team there? Beat the afl to both and have them on the back foot for once!! I know there will be an argument that putting in 3 new teams will dilute the quality of the nrl across the board. This is true, but the sooner they do it, the sooner they can develop kids in these locations especially the NT and tassie which will long term swell the talent pool. As it stands there’s 16 teams picking the scraps of talent in 2 states. The sooner we give NT a team the sooner a lot of extremely talented indigenous players who currently prefer afl can switch to rugby league and will also have a team to play for that doesn’t require them to leave their home state which is a big move for young indigenous kids.
I think Darwin's a tough ask. Perth & Adelaide I think make sense as markets that have previously hosted the sport professionally (albeit 20-30 years ago) and both cities have good facilities for teams to play from to begin with. I think Darwin falls apart for similar reasons to PNG, in that a lot of investment would be needed for suitable facilities, especially given the weather conditions. Hobart also has similar issues, and very little interest in rugby league in Tasmania as a whole, to the point that Tassie hasn't had its own competitive league active in nearly a decade. Darwin, Hobart & PNG need a lot more improvements in terms of development pathways which doesn't necessarily have to stem from having an NRL club there and also probably shouldn't at this stage. Perth, Adelaide, a 2nd team in NZ & maybe even a 4th team in South East Queensland seem like much better investments for the NRL to make.
Personally, the only way I’d follow a rugby league team again is if you gave me back my Western Reds. I was drawn from WAFL to ARL by the Tina Turner promotion in the early 90’s choosing the Newcastle Knights before getting excited for the build for our own team. I went to nearly every Reds home game and was devastated when we lost our team and just couldn’t support league anymore, giving my allegiance to Fremantle Dockers. It’ll take a strong effort to get me back to league again and I’m sure I’m not alone in that regard. Give us back our Western Reds.
The AFL is actually expanding based on good management, how thin does the NRL want to spread the crowds? The whole sport needs a PR rebrand and repositioning before it should even think of expansion…

I want Perth but not the Bears, West Aussies want their own unique team, Bears have nothing to do with WA. Needs to be unique. The Aussie government needs to help PNG set up some better pathways in PNG first. A country like PNG should be producing more NRL players than it does, scattered throughout the comp, that will improve the Kumuls. Maybe add another Q cup team and some in NSW cup first might be an option.
Perth don't care if its relocated. But if the commentators keep on going on about the return of North Sydney then it will wear thin with the PErth market. They don't care about Sydney traditional clubs. I don't know how to avoid all the N Sydney Newtown hype.

relocated clubs into PErth are ok. But the NRL needs to be really careful to down play the N Sydney or Newtown tradition or they will lose people in PErth who just don't care about Sydney.

Melbourne Storm eventually got busted for cheating the salary cap. If players don't want to relocate to Australia's second largest city with all it has to offer on the same money, it seems unlikely they will be willing to relocate with their families to PNG and live in a compound in sweltering heat. It will be like Storm players living in a compound in Queensland during Covid, but hotter and less safe. For a PNG team to be viable, the players might have to be based in North Queensland and fly into PNG for home games.

NSW conference: Canterbury Parramatta St George Illawarra South Sydney Roosters Wests Tigers Cronulla Sharks Penrith Panthers Canberra Newcastle Manly National conference: Brisbane Nth Queensland Dolphins Gold Coast Western Bears Melbourne Storm Auckland Warriors Sth Island Kea PNG Top 4 from each conference goes into the national finals series. There's more teams in the NSW conference because if you took Newcastle and Canberra away from playing the Sydney teams, that would kill a lot of interest and possibly kill the club. The teams outside of NSW have less teams thus a higher chance of being in the finals and I would consider that compensation for having to travel further every other week in their competition. You can't kull or merge any more Sydney teams. Too many have gone already. At a push, you could introduce another QLD team or reluctantly bring in an Adelaide team but I don't think they would be a success. New Zealander here. New Zealand also isn't near another NRL franchise. Also the Warriors have become a national team. Now that you've mentioned it, I think you're right. When the mention of a 2nd NZ team came about a handful of jounos and league experts were worried, it would cannibalize the Wahs.
@JRPete Exactly. But also a consistent talent pool in New Zealand isn't huge for two franchises. I'd rather focus on the talent in NZ and grow it, than rely on overseas talent to fill that gap.
@@JRPete The Wahs play once a year in the South Island, its hardly like there is massive revenue for the team coming out of the island. Even if it fails it is better to have tried than to just say "Nah, 5 and a half million people is not enough for 2 clubs, we don't deserve that" I mean, look at Auckland FC, plenty of fans have changed from Nix fans. We can't have a good sporting culture here if people never want to nurture it, and instead want to kill it before anything could potentially happen.

Here’s my two cents I think Papua New Guinea would be a great team for the Australia National Rugby League, Because Rugby league is the National sport in Papua New Guinea and it would bring tourists and tourism in to the beautiful tropical country, every single game there in the country would be a sell out all season long, and also Papua New Guinea’s QLD cup team would then have an NRL affiliate because at the the moment they don’t have one Perth city on the west coast of Australia would be kind of tough because AFL, Soccer, and cricket is most popular over there and I don’t think the Perth bears would work, but I think the Perth Pirates or West Coast Pirates would have more zing in it , sure they played some NRL games in Perth but also a state of origin game over there too, but Perth used to have a rugby league team in the ARL called the western reds but as far as I know, they didn’t do too well but there are some talented rugby league players from there, and also the problem I find with Perth is the time difference meaning if a perth based game is on live on Friday night and the broadcast transmissions airs at 7:30pm for example in the east coast (QLD, NSW, Victoria, etc it will be live at 9:30pm and even more late in New Zealand North Sydney Bears would also be a good edition to return to The National Rugby League Because they were founded in 1908 the year rugby league Australia was established and they are in the still active in the originally called New South Wales rugby league, which is now called the Knock on effect New South Wales Cup, and they won two season premierships in the 1920s and Ivan Cleary (Nathan Clearly father and the coach the Three in a row premieres the Penrith panthers) was on the north Sydney bears team The Newtown jets would be an interesting edition because the are one of the original teams of the NSW rugby league and are still active in the Knock on effect NSW cup, and in the early days they got three Season premierships, but the only thing is that I don’t like their emblem, it just looks like it hasn’t been updated in years, Newtown Please, Please, Please forgive me, and there’s no picture of a jet in it, but it is good for a heritage/retro round South Island Kea, ok this is a tough one, 1. That leaves Manly, Cronulla, Parra, Penrith, and a combined Saints/Canterbury in Sydney, with four in Queensland, Newcastle, Melbourne, Canberra, New Zealand. That's 13 out of the present 17 clubs. Sorry the bears, should be on the central coast and a new team created from scratch, especially if NZ has a second team. Scrap the PNG team unless based in Cairns as no one will want to live in Port Moresby. In a cost of living crises, I find it disgusting that they are willing to use $600 million for a a rich NRL.
NRL and Australian/US government you can achieve what you want in a better way. Plonking an 18th team in port moresby will not work in the long run because right now we are not ready for it. A better way is to use that money ($600M) administered by the NRL to fund PNGs national competition currently called the Digicel cup and publicise the hell out of the good deed you are doing. A rising tide lifts all boats. The local digicel cup players have a chance to be full time professionals on a livable wage. This then has flow on effects to the local economy and is an easier pathway for youth to set goals to achieve. Naturally coaching and player quality will improve and from there you will have more NRL players contracted from PNG. The better gauge to determine whether a PNG team will be successful is when the average PNG person can afford tickets to a game. This is a whole different matter where the PNG government really has to weed out corruption, improve policing, public transport etc etc and generally improve the economy and governance as a whole. As a Papua New Guinean i would love my own NRL team....but maybe in another 10 yrs time.

yeah but this PNG team situation is gonna be an absolute cash bonanza for the entire league - $600M over 10 years from the federal government - because they’re looking to use a PNG team to curry geopolitical favour in the Pacific. Another route could be if the NRL introduced something like what they do over in the NBA/NFL and divide the teams into conferences.

In my opinion it would be the South Island Kea (2nd kiwi team) and Perth. I'd be very surprised if PNG somehow can get a team despite most of them not wanting one for obvious reasons.
Nrl should make pathways in PNG and those players should be put into a draft system, we’ll need more players especially when we eventually have 20 teams
Like idea of a 2nd nz team. But mainly cos kiwi. An think could do it. Kiwis n every team n oz. Got one side. Not doin that well right now.
I know rubgy union has a side called Moana Pasifica, which is the super rugby side for all the small pacific nations such as Tonga and Samoa. I am suprised something like this isnt considered in the NRL. You could even play some games in Tonga and Samoa, kind of like how the Tigers play across different grounds to keep.thwir fans happh.
too much colourism in sydney thats why.
Have to be the bears
but why are they saying jets now?
Dunno why they don’t bring a team to the Northern Rivers, NRL players would love living in Byron Bay and so much talent here
Mushrooms and soy latte diet
Why would you continue to put new teams in New South Wales or Queensland. Neither grows the game at all, it just cuts the existing money and talent pool into thinner slices.
@@troystaunton254 definitely grows the game when there’s a lot of untapped talent here that does not get utilised, players like Tyrone Roberts, Jimmy the jet, Amos Roberts, James and Mitchell Aubusson, Matt King, Nick Meaney, Daine Laurie, Brian Kelly just to name a few are from here and growing up here I can tell you there were players that were meant to be superstars over them that just didn’t get a crack or not enough resources unless you travel up to the Gold Coast.
@@mitchhammond6321 it’s not a bad diet
@@briannnn98 never happen, there would be no money for it and even less people in the area to justify it.
PNG and a QRL teams should merged to field a team for a shared home games and a training base up north. Good for the game, like the DRUA's in Rugby
There is already enough teams in Australia. Give it to New Zealand
Why?
Nope win a premiership first
Did you even watch the Warriors game last week? We can't even field one competitive team, let alone two.
@@khankake9576 yeah I did, um did you know, close to 2 million people watched the super rugby final last week
It won't work in Christchurch or Wellington
Here’s my two cents
I think Papua New Guinea would be a great team for the Australia National Rugby League, Because Rugby league is the National sport in Papua New Guinea and it would bring tourists and tourism in to the beautiful tropical country, every single game there in the country would be a sell out all season long, and also Papua New Guinea’s QLD cup team would then have an NRL affiliate because at the the moment they don’t have one
Perth city on the west coast of Australia would be kind of tough because AFL, Soccer, and cricket is most popular over there and I don’t think the Perth bears would work, but I think the Perth Pirates or West Coast Pirates would have more zing in it , sure they played some NRL games in Perth but also a state of origin game over there too, but Perth used to have a rugby league team in the ARL called the western reds but as far as I know, they didn’t do too well but there are some talented rugby league players from there, and also the problem I find with Perth is the time difference meaning if a perth based game is on live on Friday night and the broadcast transmissions airs at 7:30pm for example in the east coast (QLD, NSW, Victoria, etc it will be live at 9:30pm and even more late in New Zealand
North Sydney Bears would also be a good edition to return to The National Rugby League Because they were founded in 1908 the year rugby league Australia was established and they are in the still active in the originally called New South Wales rugby league, which is now called the Knock on effect New South Wales Cup, and they won two season premierships in the 1920s and Ivan Cleary (Nathan Clearly father and the coach the Three in a row premieres the Penrith panthers) was on the north Sydney bears team
The Newtown jets would be an interesting edition because the are one of the original teams of the NSW rugby league and are still active in the Knock on effect NSW cup, and in the early days they got three Season premierships, but the only thing is that I don’t like their emblem, it just looks like it hasn’t been updated in years, Newtown Please, Please, Please forgive me, and there’s no picture of a jet in it, but it is good for a heritage/retro round
South Island Kea, ok this is a tough one, 1. The country would be Split in to rivalry in two different regions, 2. The New Zealand warriors would be renamed to north island warriors or the Auckland warriors, because the warriors were so popular all over New Zealand the renames themselves the New Zealand warriors, and New Zealand is a beautiful country too, I will admit, and 3. There would be a New Zealand Derby, twice a year and the rivalry could get out of control, but it would also mean a lot of tourists in the South Island
Overall my decision is the Papua New Guinea Team and the North Sydney Bear
And that is my two cents, you are entitled to your own opinion, and I am not gonna disrespect or dispute, all thoughts are my own and my words are final.
how about a second melbourne team right inthe heart of afl territory storms have a cult following it seems
@@dusmangi that seems like a possibility, Melbourne Storm entered the NRL since it’s first season and they won four season premierships (as of 2024), and they are still going strong.
@@braydenbrown379 agreed and thats my point Melb. storms was a stroke of genius great marketing and a great setup right from the start everything clicked as it was meant to happen Think the nrl should have the 2nd team then possible wait & see on perth png and nzs 2nd team other states such as n.t s.a are jus not enough fanbase The nrl would want to get it right once The super league was a mess & it may have given the nrl the cold feet to setup teams in those states lol
18th Team: Perth Jets/Pirates (2027)
19th Team: Central Coast Bears (2029)
20th Team: South Island Orcas (2031)
Perth Bears makes sense. Look at Brisbane Lions they won Premierships
this is National Rugby League so we should be getting teams in places where there is no nrl teams like western Australia & south Australia
PNG players could be based in Cairns where they train and live and have home games in PNG?
South Island should be before PNG. Honestly, the NRL should be planning for a 3 team NZ presence. The stronger NZ is, the stronger the game will get as it makes for an increasingly more interesting Aus-NZ international series.
png has to be there nzl, perth is ausie team😭😭
Instead of PNG, make it Pacific Islands. Play across the region. PNG, Samoa, Fiji etc. Base franchise facilities in more attractive location than PNG.
good idea👍
Interesting to see if the powers-that-be will consider it just to mirror the Super Rugby team Moana Pasifika.
@@Samizouza true but nrls real threat is afl having another melb. team should be an option look at hows storms are winning on& off field for yonks now warriors have not ru is boring lol
@@Samizouza if there nrl is looking for an 18th team should be in melb. they should get the preference over perth as much as i like a png team to join theres evidence there : storms its a no brainer
@@Samizouza btw hate the storms anyway lol
Not sure why you're showing Optus Stadium when talking about a Perth team?
The Perth side won't be playing there.
We need fewer teams not more. Get rid of these historic Sydney inner city teams like Easts and Souths, combine Canterbury and Saint George, combine Parramatta and Wests. That leaves Manly, Cronulla, Parra, Penrith, and a combined Saints/Canterbury in Sydney, with four in Queensland, Newcastle, Melbourne, Canberra, New Zealand. That's 13 out of the present 17 clubs. That's a good competition and allows for three more clubs from Perth, Pacific and a relocated Easts/Souths to Adelaide. There aren't enough true first grade players to. staff any more than 16 teams.
but how do you get fewer clubs and get clubs to agree. they won't agree in AFL either. AFL has given up merging clubs. They've tried to relocate clubs like North but they refuse to go despite being proppd up by the AFL. The AFL just don't want the heat from fans anymore. Is the NRL the same?
That's stupid you want to get rid of historic foundation clubs with big supporter bases, Also merging Canterbury and Dragons makes no sense, maybe if you said Cronulla and Dragons it would be more reasonable since Cronulla are located in between St George and Wollongong. If anything Wests should just be demoted to NSW cup the team has been a mess for over 10 years now.
@@davidpickford. I don't know if the NRL has ever given big incentives for clubs in Sydney to merge. AFL tried for years and it couldn't get over the line. I'm amazd that NRL managed to get some mergers done 20 or so years ago.
Change the Tigers back to the Magpies.
Bring in PNG
the ole pies aye
Western Reds would be weird I associate Red and Reds with QLD
Plenty of professional Australian sporting clubs have the same moniker as clubs in other domestic leagues. The AFL and NRL both have Tigers and Bulldogs, used to both have Bears and Magpies. Perth Heat in Baseball, Brisbane Heat in BBL etc
Besides, the Western Reds refers to the Roo, the Queensland Reds refers to the colour
Ringleader western coast
Catchy nick _"Western Reds"_
Reds is for a red kangaroo. I associate Heat with Perth Heat. But you've also got a team in another sport called Brisbane Heat.
lol one an animal the other a colour but sure go hard
18. Perth team
19. South Island NZ team
20. Re instate the Bears or a Fiji team
Put a team in Bali
As a PNGean...I still think we are not yet ready to put a team in the NRL. We do not have any Jr development programe in place to nurture and grow players. I agree, we don't have the infrastructure, resources. And Gals concern is on point, how many players would wanna stay in PNG in a compound? We still have a longway to go before we put a team in the NRL..
Id have a second team out of Auckland, called the Auckland Giants, and let the rest of New Zealand have the fuckin 'wahs'😅
😂😂😂 or Send the Wahs to Perth😂
Here’s an idea. Maybe the Kiwis could build their own competition rather than bludge off ours.
@@DeepseaSteve I’m Aussie but have you not seen all the kiwi players in the comp a lot of them big names they are not bludging off our comp and the population of NZ is like 4-5 million around the same as Sydney alone

@@DeepseaSteve The Warriors kept the nrl afloat during Covid mate.
New Zealand please
I would like PNG team to be the next team in but Perth, Adelaide, Darwin and a 2nd NZ team. A PNG team would be better off based out of Cairns and then take games to PNG
Perth Jets
Central Coast Bears
Second Team in New Zealand
Simples
Then down the track in like 40-50 years if they want to go to 24 teams which would be ideal in terms of a NATIONAL Competition you could go-
Adelaide
Second team in Melbourne
Darwin over PNG
And Cairns
That would cover all bases
There will be no more teams in regional NSW. You need less not more. Why is there suddenlly talk about the Jets instead of the Bears. Melbourne should definitely not have a second team. There are too many teams in the NRL as it is.
@@BDub2024 You do realise the NRL have openly said they want a 20 team comp in the next decade right?
@@CamElRodriguezSnrJnrIII Its too many. Even the AFL don't want it and they have more fans and there is more money in AFL than NRL. But for AFL they got duped into Tasmania (19th) due to pressure and how basketball took over the state due to the jack jumpers.
@@BDub2024 If only you were on the ARL board or you were Peter Vlandys 😂😂😂
PNG needs to be in the comp. Based in Cairns , playing in png , a la west tigers , 4-5 times a year.
Players WILL play for them as it’s nrl exposure. My biggest fear is it would be a transit lounge , to other clubs.
Cairns crime rate is 50% higher than the average. Why is no one saying they’d (players) like in a compound in Cairns?
the NRL has more money than the average homme owner in cairns - i think they can afford protection - ur not living in New Caledonia chap
You need another New Zealand team look at the Wahs even wen they are playing $hlt the stadium has more people in it than most games in Australia
you need to ask aunty jacinda for some kiwi dollars first lool the NRL is not a charity case for kiwis.
As a North Sydney Bears fan there is no way I can support a Perth team. PNG is the only Bears team I could support because they wouldn't be Australian based.
Ringleader western coast club
Sorry the bears, should be on the central coast and a new team created from scratch, especially if NZ has a second team. Scrap the PNG team unless based in Cairns as no one will want to live in Port Moresby. In a cost of living crises, I find it disgusting that they are willing to use $600 million for a a rich NRL.
Tbh NZ shouldn’t have a second team , their first team haven’t got a ring yet lol
As a Papua New Guinean i would love my own NRL team....but maybe in another 10 yrs time.
they problem is ur government sweet child. Have you looked at the state of ur countrys politis lately? something tells me you havent.
@@thvtsydneylyf3th077 have you read and understood what I've written?
What about a New Zealand South Island team , a team from america and a perth team 🤔
nz has a team. sit down with ur greed. lol just be patient - you alreay have one you have one since 95 in the SL and then in 2001 back in the nrl.
Perth, NZ South Island, and 3rd Brisbane team would be the best options for 20 team comp. Adelaide doesn't have the following and noone is going to want to live in PNG
Why’s Ipswich not in the conversation
because no one has come out officially to pleadge financial support for that idea. I mean, on that logic why doesn't every town in QLD deserve a team in the NRL? does that make sense to you
Why would you do conferences?
Exactly, conferences ruined Super Rugby
People who propose Conferences for Australian leagues, habitually propose Conferences with lopsided travel burdens for one Conference and Bus trips for the other
