They likely haven't gone anywhere. Chinese people run the gamut of skin colors and within individuals have the ability to tan very darkly if they are working outside without a wide brimmed hat. Hard labor jobs go away with industrialization because humans can't compete with the strength, efficiency, and reliability of machines. Factory workers and desk workers don't get much sun. Agrarian Chinese don't get much Internet exposure.
