I used to do that as well! Then my mentor showed me that he does front to back, and it helped me to gauge the values a bit more accurately. I found that when I started with the sky or distance everything was appearing a shade or two darker than how it looks in the landscape. Seems like different orders of operations work depending on what our tendencies or reasoning are!
Impressive amount of variation achieved from a fairly modest color assortment! Just curious, which colors were Utrecht brand? Any of them from the Cadmium-Free assortment?

I always paint from farback to nearfront, as in real life, makes more sense to me and omits filling in all the block,
