Flash flood at Venus Pools Maui

- I have a video of a crazy flash flood that happened at Venus pools on Maui. I was getting to jump off the 30 ft rock into the tide pool when my buddy yelled "STOP!, do you hear rushing water upstream?" I faintly heard it too and then saw a couple a quarter mile up stream pointing at the river jumping up and down pointing at the river. I instantly started yelling for my 2 friends and another tourist couple to get out of the water. The only way out is climbing up the rocks where the water came down. I started recording seconds after they were out and safe.
Wherever things aren't growing, water's been flowing
A great adage
What if I'm standing in the desert

Pay attention to the mountains. If the mountains is raining and dark , you don't go hiking or swimming. Locals 101.
Anywhere in the tropics, especially on mountain streams and waterfalls. It might be sunny where you're splashing around at but it could've rained further on up. A flash flood cutting through steel gradients moves incredibly fast.
It's always funny when someone moves to Hawaii and immediately starts pretending like they have lived there for 50 years.
You see them all over any post that relates to Hawaii in any way.
I didn't know that, thankyou
So true if you see rain up there ,just dont think about the fun moments with hiking, just think about your precious life and save it for another day ,,, because even1/2 minute late can can take lives
@@someguy5035 I also find it funny when someone tries to pick people up on something so petty. You see them all over any post relating to anything.
Omg. This is crazy. We just swam there yesterday and I was curious about this so I searched and found your video. Nature is no joke.

It’s hard to picture “how much it’s raining” this is a crazy way to show the volume of a strong quick storm.
This is how people have died, and will continue to die. These floods are surprising because they come from heavy rain some distance away, in the mountains, and (as seen here) there often is no rain at all where the flood ends up.
They would have to set an alarm to tell people to get out of the water. The same alarm is used for tsunami, two months ago a tourist died. 2021
Trust me the ones who die don’t live here... us Hawaiians born n raise on the islands know when its been heavy rains up mauka don’t go swimming in fresh water ponds. Sad that alot of tourist come most not all have no respect for our aina. They think they kno everything n in a blink of an eye gets taken away.
@@Badz92685 Exactly, and they always ignore the signs like its just there just to be there.
@@Badz92685 heavy gray cloud in the mountains means all that rain will reach the sea in a few minutes.
"Swim over there to those rocks and climb out" -Notice how the circulating current is pulling half that lagoon back UNDER the waterfall??? Nobody is going to swim out of there... his first explanation was spot on. They'd die. Period.
I used to live Maui for 20yrs, Just a little info for y’all, If you guys do decide to go to the 7 sacred pool and the sky is grey do not jump in the pool, And if you are in the pool swimming and you see the sky starts turning grey quickly get out you have at least 5 minutes to get yourself out
Rule #1 about Hawaii if you look up at the mountains and see darkness and clouds
Dont go hiking in that area or swimming
Thanks for sharing! I’ll be there soon and wasn’t aware that this kind of event could happen. Now I’ll be paying attention.
I will never understand how people travel to places they care little to learn about.
Thanks to this poster your life and our tax dollars are spared 🤙🏽
I used to live right down the road from there. And we seen that many times when I was a kid
Dont be confused it doesn't have to be raining and dark it can be nice and sunny even miles up the mountain
Oh wow, I saw a video a few days ago that was shot further up the stream, half-dozen people were in there when a flash flood was coming, and two people took their time. They were swept down the falls and into the cauldron, and then the video ended. Where it ended it felt like they were banged up but alive, and in this video, that cauldron looks mean, too. I wonder what happened to those folks.
Do you have a link to that video?!!!! 🔥🔥

Head up WAIOKA pond is very nice but could be very dangerous dues to the flash floods stream coming down the mountain. To enjoy your stay like we did . We stayed at HANAPAPALANI Airbnb right across the street and every morning we crossed Hana HWY and walked to the pond no one is there at 6am until 8am so it’s yours for you ❤❤❤
What was the point you knew to get out
Wow this is scary! I've never seen a flash flood like that. I see how people get killed there by these.
Can't believe anyone is near that water with a huge storm on the mountains above. You know it's going to flash.
Glad you’re safe

Earth’s a cool place to live.
I love going to jump and swimming. First time to see it flood. WOW.
The brochures said a babbling brook 😮
Holy shit, just a few weeks ago, we were just swimming and sitting on those rocks where the water was rushing 😮
Insane footage. Thanks for sharing this rare event
Common event '
Kinda crazy how clean it is compared to what you see in the desert / city area where it picks up tons of trash along the way. Guess this is what you could call a "clean" flash flood.
Is this normal for Hawaii?
When it rains up the mountains yes. It flash floods a lot. Always have to be aware of weather and surroundings at all times.
Yes, always listen to your surroundings when hiking or out in the forrest areas in Maui...2 of my friends (who live there) got stuck overnight in the forrest due to one. Its common in areas around tide pools and rivers
Whenever you hear really strong wind or rumbling coming from one direction just know you should run 😳
90% of tourists that have no social connection to hear the real stories of hawaii think it's all white sand and bliss. There are people that die every week in hawaii jumping in water or getting too near to water that they play off as safe...
Hey Eric, do you have an email address at which we could contact you regarding this video? We would be interested to discuss a license to use this video if this is generally possible? (i.e. via email) :) Cheers, Felix
Awesome and glad you did not jump in!!!
That's insane.
wow, that's a lot of water!
That’s horrifying. How would you know something like that is coming? Would you hear it? Feel it? Certainly none of those people in the video would’ve survived had they been down in that swimming hole below the rocks when that started?!!
Just as they said up there, looking up the mountain top, maybe the mouth of the river ,if it rains or dark clouds upon the mouth of the river up there, and even if it does not rain at the place where people stay and sunny ,than that is the signal they used to say 😢
If the filmer was 20 years younger, there would've been two people drowned... caught on video.
This is so beautiful
The power of nature.
What would we have done? You should have known seeing the overcast up above the high probability of a flash flood.
Is this chanel for sale?
How much?

What a shame all that dirty water going into that pretty blue-green pool!
"Whooooooo!!" I'm guessing this is why real locals dislike tourists like these
That water is a paid actor
It always amazes me that people are so oblivious to danger. This group of people are standing there as hundreds of tons of water pound away at the river bank a few feet away. Any second a huge chunk of that river bank could just break away. They have no idea what's beneath their feet or where fault lines and cracks might run.
This is how people make the news.
Ya know it would be awful hard to swim with that strong current and rocks.
After it's over I hope you like the new landscape it's going create
Yep last March flood took our ohana house... they're no joke.
Sharp Vid !!!
Nice video
one reason to stay away, another is that this is on private property and no one should tourist there.
@A L Only good thing about tourist going here is they lose their go pros, sunglasses, watches, jewelry, etc. Then the locals get to go dive the pool and find it. Other than that, tourist deviate from the trail all the time, especially the minute they see someone walking to another spot, they will follow in hopes of finding secret beaches. I agree with hokulani. That is all private land owned by hana ranch. If these deaths keep happening then it will get closed to tourist for good, just like 7 pools at Oheo in Kipahulu.
@A L Locals are allowed to use it. Tourists aren't supposed to. the easement actually means the water is public but the trails aren't.
Looks like a reservoir was opened...
“what would happen??”

Why are you not water sliding down!!!!
Imagine all the living creatures that are in the torrent. Probably some snakes and all sorts of spiders and beetles floating around in there

Rainy day ? Dirty water 💧? Why would you swim ?
It depends on what is upstream. Turbidity in water is not always a sign that's it's unhealthy or at a high fecal count.
The water looked blue that say in the pool it’s just cloudy so it’s not bright blue the dirt came with the rushing waters
@@michaelwertz6689 brown water in Hawaiian rivers means that there's a flood coming or has been a flood and you shouldn't be there
