Just an idea about the workings behind the homing fish (at 31:57 ): A bunch of note blocks containing the fish, a row of coins above it, and a one up mushroom above the coins. The P-Switch is active, so the coins are solid blocks, and it's night time, so the one up is a (homing) poison mushroom. The mushroom would try to be on top of you the whole time, and as soon as the P-Switch runs out, it would drop on a note block and release the (not so homing) fish.
