His mom died in early age and his dad had left. Very difficult childhood as a consequence. I believe this song is a cathartic release of his pain from that unfortunate experience. It could be interpreted that he misses his mother, loves her but needs to release the grief aspect of her grip on his heart and all the pain he has experienced following that event, so he can grow. And I believe he wrote it to help other people who have experienced the same, losing a parent young, to know that they're not alone and help them gently release the pain and grow.
