Good video. I'm going thru this process right now on a new poor boy mountain rifle I just bought. I'm going to have to use a brass drift punch and give it a few taps to the right. It grouped very tightly just left of center at 25 yds. Same at 50 and 100 yds.
I have the opposite with my 1858/63 new are sighted at about 75 yards, no sight adjustment at all. at about 8 to 10 yards she is going over the target by about 1.5 to 2 feet. Not a lot I can do, except Kentucky windage it, trial and error.
I just acquired a rifle with the adjustable hawken sight you have on yours. How/where do you place the front sight within the rear sight? The buckhorn rear is new to me. Any comments or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I like to put to front site down in the notch at 100 yards so the poi ball will hit just above that. Then you can learn what the adjustment is for you hold in the buckhorn is for further distance. in the middle for two hundred say or across the tips maybe. Thanks for stopping by
U wud have to measure the dovetail, but I think it is a 3/8 cut. Check Lyman's website, Muzzleloader Builders, Track of the wolf, Pecatonica River. One of them should be able to help u, but Lyman would have a finished sight. Buffalo Arms might have a finished site for it also as they are not a builders supply house
If the ball is hitting on the circle, I would expect it to drop at 50 or 100 yards. Using a 100 yard target you could make adjustments to bring sight on at what ever range you feel is appropriate. Eventually you will have to use varied sight picture to make hits at various ranges because they are fixed sights and the only adjustment that you can make is in the sight picture. This is why most prefer buckhorn sights because the front sight can be held at different heights in the buckhorn for different distances. Also a rifleman will need to know his rifle much more.
50 cal Hawken shooting a hollow base/hollow point buffalo bullet. I think 365 gr. 100 gr. of real Black Powder. Is it center target at 50 yards and 6 o'clock 100 yards? or vice versa? I haven't shot this rifle since the 1989, and I can't remember lol. Planning on using it during muzzle loader season.

Where can I find a adjustable slide buckhorn sight for my lymans great plains rifle? Is it kinda once size fits all?

So when you start at 25 yards, when you take it out to 50 yards or even 100 yards. What should you expect in terms of impact on paper?

Working on my 36 Kimbler rifle
Sounds like fun
Good job Dave.
Its not that simple on my smoothbore. No rear sights. 👍
Smoothbores are a different animal
