This a super early My Chemical Romance set shot at Maxwell's right after "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" came out. The band was opening for seminal Jersey punk icons, the Lawn Darts and played an abridged half hour set. This was shot on a Sony DCR-TRV140 by the illustrious Josh Goldfarb and edited in iMovie.

I remember doing soundcheck with my band, and the sound guy was doing the drums, so our drummer was just hitting one drum for him over and over again, I walked out to get a beer and as I walked outside I heard some dude with the quickest wit ever say quietly to his friend "it sounds even better from out here!"

Another fun fact. That bass Mikey is playing was the influence of Mikey Way's signature bass. He talks about in many interviews that he once had a silver sparkle jazz bass that was demolished on tour because someone forgot to close the trailer doors after a show. It fell out on the middle of the highway but crazy ass Frank ran out in front of cars to retrieve it.

To add an additional fact, if this performance never happened at Maxwell's then the band would have never met their former manager Brian Schechter. We're watching history unfold here.
I think he's still their manager! I mean he still manages some stuff, im just happy that they are still in good terms
I got my sources of Brian being a former manager through Google (not the most reliable source lol). Anyways, if I can remember correctly from MCR’s documentary, I think Brian was the reason the band actually got into the mainstream attention. So it’s really cool that the “My Chem Explosion” happened because of this very concert. Thinking about it, this concert is super symbolic in many ways!

George Koroneos i dunno... he's talked about this show in a bunch of interviews... sort of described it as a big moment for them in the story of the band.
There is also that one talk show thing where Gerard was in the audience and asked a question when he was like 15 and chubby. Apparently that one Hart D. Fisher (the guy that accused Gerard of lying about his first published comic book) has the footage and won't release it because he's a petty old asshole.

@@etOre35 they were just another local band back in the day, and I worked at hot topic and they came in regularly, and I had a co worker whose band was also signed to eyeball records...that's what I'm saying, they were just local kids in a band when I first went to see them. And then my mind was blown and I was a fan immediately. I am so grateful I got to watch their "origin story" from the front rows 🖤

It's insane watching this and realising that this show was only two months post bullets release.. I've never seen any recording of them covering jack the ripper either, i think this might actually be the only live footage of it on youtube because i've only ever come across the shitty audio version of it thats floating around. Two weeks before this show, Gerard showed up to my office at The Belleville Times (I was the editor) and asked me if I would include this show in that week's paper to help promote it. I told him I'd do one better and interviewed the whole band (sans Frank) at the comic book store next door a few days later. As a thank you the band gave me passes to the show and let us video record it. I can't believe that was 15 years ago.

So I watched this, and then watched the footage of them performing Welcome To The Black parade in Mexico. It almost made me cry, because here, (the Maxwell’s concert) they’re surrounded by close friends and family and a small handful of fans, and then a few years later (in Mexico), they’re performing in front of a huge crowd of fans that are all singing along and screaming and clapping and I’m just so fucking proud of them and always will be.

I was about 12-13 at this time. My sister was 16 around the early 2000’s, we always jammed to emo bands in her car.
