      Please for the love of God watch Victoria (2015), it's one of the only movies ever ACTUALLY SHOT IN ONE CONTINUOUS TAKE-- no editing. I'm making a patreon account right now to sub to you, but I wanted to drop this here. Sorry for the all caps, but like. You'll get my enthusiasm if you decide to watch it.

      I thought he was ok. He didn't really emote much and was very emotionless with his performance. Joe was the MVP of the movie and that dude deserved the Oscar for the kitchen scene alone. Imo.

    • @hakaigonzalez7253
      @hakaigonzalez7253 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dean Bennington Na he was bland and not memorable. It wasn't a bad performance I just didn't think it was freakin Oscar worthy. The dude that played Joe was better and more memorable. Imo.

    • @hakaigonzalez7253
      @hakaigonzalez7253 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dean Bennington You don't have to be a dick about it, its my opinion. The scene were Joe has to tell Ruben that he can't stay is the best scene in the movie and raci fuckin owned that scene.

    I love that this movie doesn't tell you "hey! Feel bad for deaf people" it's more like "embrace that we are normal too and this is your new way of life", that's why that final scene is so powerful.
    I read some guy's review on letterboxd and he thought the movie was very offensive to people that decide to go with the treatment, as if they were less-than. The guy who wrote it is deaf too and had the surgery as well, he says that in his case and with more people it wasn't like the movie, but it depends on the person. I guess I can see where he's coming from and I wouldn't be able to counter his point since he has been experiencing it for most of his life, but to me, the movie felt more like learning to accept yourself and the treatment was more of a plot device to get there.

      In a way, it reminds me of how Nomadland portrayed a community that is often pitied and looked down on, while also telling the story of a very personal character journey.

    This imo is one of the best recent examples of perfect sound design, it was nominated for 6 Oscar's and won Best Sound and Best Editing. Acting was phenomenal and it being shot on film just added to the overall experience. Riz is slowly becoming a household name and its absolutely well deserved

    The sound design in this film won the Oscar. Deservedly so.
    Paul Raci was born with both deaf parents, and he understood the deaf community personally and was nominated for Best Supporting character.
    Lauren Ridoff is deaf and portrayed Diane, the teacher. She will be in the upcoming MCU film, the Eternals, as their first deaf superhero.

    Something that stood out to me was when he was being told he sounded like an addict. It wasn't a substance he was now addicted to it was the dream and way of life that he had with his girlfriend and their music. It's what made the moment he decided to let go all the more poignant, when she just for a moment scratched at her arm he knew that dream was gone.

    • @greentaigo2552
      @greentaigo2552 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I feel like that one lie pretty much summarizes the message of the movie.
      I really feel connected to the main character because I KNOW I'd feel the same in his situation. Deep inside he knows he won't be able to continue doing what he does but he still wants to and buys into that temptation when getting his surgery regardless of what he's learned in the community because he simply can't imagine living another life. It's the difficulty of accepting that your life is either going down an entirely different path or a downwards spiral.
      Of course you wish he'd stay with the community but at the same time if you know how it feels to love music and performing as much as he does then you know how difficult it is to just completely give up on all of that.

    Yes they had deaf people on set and if my information is correct everyone at the house where all of the dear people were staying, they all were actually part of the deaf community. • @Serenity113
    @Serenity113 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    What I found interesting is that they never really explained what caused his loss of hearing(at least, I don't remember if they did) I guess it shows that it doesn't really matter if it was caused the loud music of the concerts they preformed at or it was just something degenerative. It's more about the journey of this character.

After the movie I watched an interview of him talking about his role. FUN FACT (not my own words): During scenes where Ruben is struggling to reconcile his hearing loss, Riz Ahmed wore auditory blockers deep inside his ear canal that emitted white noise. He told USA Today: "I couldn't hear anything, including the sound of my own voice." After some time, he decided to forego the sound blockers and simply immerse himself in Deaf culture by communicating with the director and deaf cast almost exclusively through ASL.

    Have a small personal connection to this. When I lived briefly in Arizona I worked at a call center for the deaf and hard of hearing called Caption Call. When Ruben is on the phone and reads the captions, I would've been the middle person dictating what the person is saying into the machine that produces the captions. And if the machine misinterpreted a word you had to quickly click on it and correct it with a keyboard.

    So amped to hear you shout out metal drummers!! I love ALL music but grind, hardcore, black/death metal, and punk are at the top of the list for me. That said, obv I've been hearing "that's not music, it's just noise" my whole life when bumping Dragged Into Sunlight, NAILS, Pig Destroyer, etc and IT DRIVES ME NUTS!! I know the music isn't for everyone but "just noise??" You don't need to like it, but how can you not appreciate how technically demanding it is for the musicians and the level of practice and talent it requires to reach that level!?!?
    Breaks down like this: Neil Peart, Keith Moon, John Bonham, etc are (rightfully) considered as some of the best drummers of all time, right? Well... Dragged Into Sunlight's drummer can pop in ANY of their albums and learn the tunes after learning the song structures... but can many classically-trained/legendary Rock drummers say the same even after a full week of listening to Pig Destroyer?? That doesn't take anything away from those drummers but it does say something about great metal drummers!!
    PS: I've played in grind, hardcore, punk, etc bands since highschool and can confidently say, in full seriousness... WEAR EAR PLUGS! The scenario in this film is REAL and is prob the most heartbreaking thing that could happen to ANY kind of musician!!

But, Sound design lowkey the MVP of this movie, really elevated it.

    Yooo What'Up DuddyBraf?
    It's been a long time like. So in France I had the chance to go see Sound Of Metal. Too bad for you it was released on a platform, personally it's scary and it can kill the cinema. Not only is it a masterpiece, but also it traumatized me forever. Obviously that warns us against harmful noises. The worst is that dear you have no health insurance that will take care of you as in my country, force you to make that change. Ha yes and also Olivia Cooke is quite impressive and scary enough, it's madness! After Ruben leaves with the old man who approaches him with the thing in question, yeah, it's not necessarily spitting on the deaf but after that we protect the eardrums. Hi to you Duddy Braf.
    PS: I make sure to work on my English but that's otherwise it's cool.
    PS2 : It's like a Horror Movie LOL !
    In France LOL IS PTDR, MDR ( Mort de rire )And then there's Matthieu Amalric our French pride like an Omar Sy, Boutella, Pom Kleimentieff, Jean DUJARDIN or Mélanie LAURENT!
    Big Up Cinephil .

    That movie was awesome. Especially because I "damaged" my hearing attending concerts like this. That being said, got to promote a girl that contributed to the soundtrack, Margaret Chardiet and her music project Pharmakon. It is not to everyone's taste and certainly she's loud and noisy and creepy but she's one of the kind.

    Amazing movie! If y’all liked this check out It’s All Gone Pete Tong (2004). Pretty much the same concept but about a DJ. Both excellent films in their own rights.

    I never scene that movie, so I can not comment, but the tittle kind of sound like a documentary on heavy metal, which made me think: could a reactor react to a documentary?
    Well, if you ever want to try the experiment I have one tittle for you: The bones Brigade an autobiography. I didn't care for the subject of the movie, but I think I've rewatch it like 5 times. The last minute of it is just, wow!
    Metallica: Some kind of monster, could get you much more views though.

    I may be a pessimist but the end left me feeling devastated. I didn’t feel that he came to peace with his deafness. Instead it was the realization that he wasted so much money on the cochlear implants for nothing. So well acted. This terrifies me about ever losing my hearing; we take it for granted!

      I agree! The reality of it is that..well he did do exactly what you said. Where the film leaves us on is…what’s next? I guess as long as you can keep asking yourself that, then you can live another day. And that’s a good thing!

      @@JamesVSCinema it broke my heart when he left the deaf support group/house. Even though he felt uncomfortable at first, I think they were really caring people who would’ve been good for him, too. His world is so much more different now than it used to be, there’s no avoiding that. 😔
