Would love that race to return. Wellington would never allow it, and that track was horrible to drive and harder to pass on than Monaco. Still, great memories!
What a great time that was for motor racing in New Zealand. I worked for the Wellington Harbour Board and we could bring our alcohol into work before the area was closed and bags checked. Could also go onto the roof to see the race along the waterfront and Jervois Quay. Some of us went up in the helicopter to see the race from the air as well. To have Wellington made a round of the WTCC and have the world's best drivers here made it even more special. One year, I went for a ride around the track after the race with Graham Crosby driving.
Was an amazing time for New Zealand Motorsport, would have been amazing to watch. Haha that would have been awesome, perfect place to work at the time of this race, the helicopter ride would have been awesome and going around the track would have been next level, super cool 🙏🏼
You couldn’t recreate this nowadays. Even if the street race continued, or came back. It’s just a moment in automotive history we’ll never see again. It’s a one shot deal. Not just the cars or racing, but the times themselves. It’s only through the looking glass does one appreciate how monumental the days of group A/B/C were. No one back then would have, it’s like anything.
I agree 100%, nothing will top this, especially for New Zealand racing. It would still be amazing to see the Wellington 500 make a comeback, would be awesome for nz Motorsport and would be amazing to broadcast to the world, but that will never happen

Yes, Godzilla's reputation has only got bigger, one of Japan's greatest cars ever.. gentleman Jim was also a credit to newzealand and that's coming from an Aussie.. top top driver and bloke!
that fred gibson GTR was the best touring car of all time. nothing could beat that. 4wd. 4 wheel steering. it ran boost of 6 to 6.8. the GTRs out of japan were running 4 to 4.5 pressure boost. That thing could turn up the wick and blow anyone away better than the eggenberger sierras or the best of the DJR sierras.

I miss Godzilla. I've been a Nissan fan since the days of the Turbo Bluebirds of the early 80's and was shattered when they were kicked out the Australian Touring Car Championship. The ATCC hasn't been the as enjoyable since it became at a Ford v Holden snoozefest.
Nissan through the 80s-90s we’re next level, definitely hasn’t been the same level of racing or as enjoyable since back then. Getting rid of the gtr Would have to be one of the biggest mistakes in Australian Motorsport
i watch this and thing if the gtr didn't poop the front diff that choked commodore came in 3rd... against the world leaders! GTR is sick and i love em! but the mighty commo goated this race! 👍
The R32 is my favourite Group A car of all time but the BMW's were so suited to this track. Significantly fewer fuel and tyre stops meant they were always going to win on paper and mostly proved it on the track. Manufacturer wins for the NM500? BMW 6, Holden 2, Ford 2
Yeah after 92 the whole series was terminated/banned/drawn to a close. Likes of holden still carried on with an evolved version of the same car, it technically was banned. it was not allowed to race again when other cars still did
Technically all turbo cars were banned, including the Sierra, Supra, Starion, Skyline (including the older HR31 & DR30) et cetera et cetera. Some Sierras did run un-turboed as 2L class cars though. 2.5L class Group A cars (mainly just the BMW M3) were still allowed in Australia in 1993 as well as 2L Group A class. NA 5L class cars like the Group A VL Commodores were still allowed in 1993 too, Larry Perkins ran a VL for the first 2-3 rounds as well as privateers still running VL Group As as late as 1995 IIRC.
@@SmokeyLabo In theory, Gibson Motorsport could probably have run them un-turboed and RWD with a RB20DE like how the Sierras ran un-turboed. But one can appreciate why Nissan would feel aggrieved and have no interest in doing that. The lack of finding a way to accommodate Nissan and BMW under Group 3A was disgraceful IMO (a turbo RWD-only R32 sedan perhaps? a BMW 540i?), given how long both brands had been supporting Australian touring cars.

Even Mark Skaife has said it was banned. The dominance of this car forced rule changes, rather than the others stepping up their game, the rules were changed to suit home grown V8s. As it was the Beemers and Cosworths were slapping the V8s around. So it became a boring 2 horse race. Now where are they?
Amazing times. But everyone keeps looking at this time with Nissan fan boy eyes, let’s look at facts here the Nissan was always on the cusp of breaking mechanically where as the bmw ford and holdens would go the full race reliably well at least as reliable as cars where back then. Then there’s the issue of 4wd which was eliminated in this race. But as you can see throughout the race the Nissan was well over fuelled to the point of detriment to its own performance the only car with twin turbos also has a huge part to play. As if the m3 was turbo for example the Nissan would be nowhere in sight. As the chassis and engine are better tuned just look how good it is with no turbo and in the wet compared to everything else. There’s a reason the m3 is one of the best racing chassis ever. In saying all this though I’m not hating on the Nissan quite the opposite I love the car I’m just looking at things purely from the facts. Thanks for the upload so nice to see my hometown back when we did cool stuff with cars. ❤
The m3 for sure was and still is an amazing car! One of the best race cars ever, I would’ve loved to see them turbo charge it, would have made for some amazing racing and would have sounded even better then it already did! I love both the gtr and e30, I have an e30 320i (not quite the same as the m3 lol but still😂) but I don’t think I’ll ever sell it, such a cool car 🔥

The racing if both got turbos would have been epic you probably might even find that the turbo e30 if done by factory team with testing would keep up and maybe even be faster that the 4wd twin turbo gtr.

Truth is, the Skyline GTR was never explicitly banned anywhere; as various racing categories around the world adopted different rule sets, particularly excluding turbos (which also eliminated the Sierra RS500, among others). Some European competitions outlawed turbos (particularly in response to the Sierra's dominance) before the GTR was even announced as a production model, so in those sectors it was ineligible even before it existed.
