I've been doing home automation for years. I decided to get serious about zigbee. 10 minutes later I find you did a video 4 days earlier. You're awesome, I've been watching your stuff for years. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for watching over the years! Zigbee is still alive and well... It is awesome
My POE went down and I had to use a non-powered switch, but I used the USB from an unrelated device to power it and it sat on the LAN just like normal. Worked fine until I could replace the POE switch. I'm using straight Zigbee, haven't tried MQTT yet. It talks to 4 different brands of devices in my house. Thermos, plugs, IR blaster, dimmers, etc.. Using HA, I think it was as easy as setting the switch to pick USB or LAN and telling HA the IP and default port, then it found all the Zigbee devices when they were put in "learn" mode. No hiccups, been using for 6 months or so. HA can send OTA updates to the Zigbee devices, with a click. No complaints, handy lil guy.
Thanks. I got mine the other day and have it configured as a router. I still need to add a BT Proxy to my setup. For me, mostly so I can do stuff with my apple watch. Wish I had this type of stuff 30 years ago.
just a few countries used cm
Country count 195, only 3 doesn’t use metric
Yup! They lied to us in school!
My aunt arrived at the train station and I was 'sent to meet her'. That joke just doesn't work so well with inches.
Awesome explanation.
Thanks!
Great video Travis... I'm looking forward to your Z2M migration video, I'd hate to lose all I have. Currently running 2 Sonoff sticks - 1 as a router and the other as a coordinator with about 50 devices on my system.
Working on it this week I hope between some out of town family drama but I'll get there!
@@digiblurDIY Haing in there buddy
I've been using the EFR with Z2M, so far it's been bullet proof. Now that the ember driver has exited Beta it gives that extra confidence
Yes I tried it a couple years ago and it was a mess. Lots of issues with devices dropping off so I fully understood the experimental flag in Z2M. I do want to try out the new driver once it stabilizes a bit, pretty cool they redid it all.
@@digiblurDIY I should also say I am using 2 of the SMLights EFR versions. As you say the firmware updates are pure bliss!!!
I am thinking when I start deploying Matter over Thread it will be with one of these as well
I have a current Skyconnect EFR based stick. That is one thing I want to try is to use one of these over ethernet for thread.
I’ve had one of these for a few months and it’s pretty great. Another benefit is that you can charge it with a power brick and then walk around and pair it to all of your devices so that you’re very close to them and they pair quickly. I had a few devices in the garage that refused to pair until I did this.
What happened when you moved it back to the center? Most guidance I've seen says to pair Zigbee devices from the locations they will live at.
Same as well, I always pair in place. If something won't pair due to distance then I probably need to build the mesh out a little more.
Thanks.
Cool, I think I'm going to order one.
The software running on the stick definitely makes it easy to setup and manage. So so nice.
"There's just a few countries that use cm or there".... Ok!!! 😂🤣😂🤣
YUP! :)
Hahahahaha. I was gonna be like. Are you serious man. Lol.😂😂😂
Little bit of sarcasm there. ;)
Thanks for your video on Zigbee, how do connect to some of my Zwave devices?
You'd need to use ZwaveJS and a Zwave USB dongle
@@digiblurDIY What is it about the word "dongle"?
Hello, I been looking into Zigbee. I'm trying to decide if I should go with tuya Wifi based switches VS Zigbee. I did some gooling, can't seem to find comparison betwen two techs. What would you suggest? Thanks fo the video!!!
Really down to if you have neutrals in your walls.
You always having me spend my money... I do love my tubezb Poe but updating the firmware is difficult.
Tough to upgrade for sure if you are pretty much already there.
Great video! Is there anything like this for zwave?
Thanks! Not that I know of, all I have seen is Pi hats and USB stuff
If going to this device do you need to re sync all the devices. You showed pairing of the plug, but is that new or already in your network. I use zigbee2mqtt on a docker setup how might this affect my setup. Lasstly what is the range of the device?
What are you using on Z2M now for a coordinator?
I wasn’t clear on this. Could I run two (or more) of these things on the same network. One coordinator and one or more as routers?
Yes, you can run multiple others are routers on the same network.
Why the 06 and not the 06p7 though? It seems like that's an upgrade for 4 bucks more. What's your opinion on it?
I do talk about this a little, it is a newer chip but firmware seems stable'ish. If you have a big network then definitely get the bigger one
Have the same in ZigStar firmware, but opensource
Nice!
I'm using a USB implementation of a CC2652P configurator in my HA+Z2M setup and the SLZB-06 has some interesting features that make it attractive to upgrade. Would I have to rebuild my Zigbee network from scratch, though, or is there a smooth migration path available if I get the CC2652P version?
That's super easy... I just helped someone in Discord with this. There's a process that you migrate the the IEEE address from the old adapter to the new, change the settings in Z2M and start it back up and everything pairs right up.
@@digiblurDIY Awesome! I will find and copy the relevant instructions from Discord and save them for later
@unmesh59 search IEEE on my Discord as I pasted it there for future searching when I needed it.
@@digiblurDIY Found it!
Where are you getting the 2024 dated firmware?
This thread github.com/Koenkk/Z-Stack-firmware/discussions/496
ihope if you can explain in video how to add multiple zigbee2mqtt in homeassistant please
You can one two for sure with ease in HAOS, if you do your own docker thing, it is pretty unlimited.
So if I understand correctly, right now i have the Skyconnect dongle in my Home Assistant server, that works well, but it doesn't cover my garage. Would placing this in my garage work together with the Skyconnect all at the same time?
Not in the same network, with two coordinators. You could create two networks, or run one coordinator and a repeater.
@@BobSmith42 I want all the devices on the same ZHA setup.
@@zaprodk you can have one coordinator in a Zigbee network, but you can have multiple routers/repeaters, though. That would help extend the range and support more devices. Zigbee2MQTT apparently supports multiple networks, which might be interesting. Upstairs and downstairs network with optimal placement of the antenna?
You just need a few more mains powered devices or one or two of these as routers and expand the network.
I have seen that ethernet Zigbee devices can interface with both ZHA and Z2M. Can SLZB-06M interface with ZHA & Z2M?
Definitely don't do them at the same time for sure. But yes the 06M can do Z2M but it is still marked as experimental, I'd go with the 06 (non M) if you plan or think about using Z2M.
the antenna is not the main problem. the problem with usb dongle is the interface. USB.
USB is not practical with virtual servers, especialy if you run a cluster of servers, the vm can move between hosts, so usb is not an option at all.
Yep
Yup
A Zigbee-to-Ethernet bridge like the one shown in this video is better than a traditional Zigbee USB dongle in a cluster environment where the HomeAssistant VM could failover to a different physical host and automatically reconnect to the bridge.
An alternative would be to physically move the Zigbee USB adapter to the new host whenever a failover occurs, but that obviously wouldn't be automatic.
Absolutely! I know people have usb pass thru issue as well and it makes it easy. Definitely a must for a cluster setup.
I have Home Assistant running in a proxmox cluster and love that the VM can run in any Node without any change on the config.
@@oriolis08Are you also using a Zigbee-to-Ethernet bridge like the one in this video?
@@jeremyjedynak Yes, model SLZB-06M running Z2M without issues for five months aprox.
hi is there a way to migrate from a sonoff zigbee dongle E to a SLZB-06 with out repairing all my devises Im using Z2M
Not that I know of. Manual is it given the two different chipsets
Can this do ZigBee and Thread at the same time?
Their EFR chipset model might but I would keep them separated myself. Too many issues out of Thread at this time and I prefer my Zigbee to be stable.
12:09
Does this work without HA or when HA is down?
Could you make a video with zigbee (sensors/remotes) and tasmota "RULES", from what I gather that could run independently without any HA. Is that true?
you could do Zigbee2MQTT and NodeRed or something if HA was down. As long as MQTT and Z2M ran on a different host.
@@digiblurDIY
Would be great if you made a tasmota "rules" video on zigbee. I'm reading the official tasmota stuff and I'm totally lost.
There's no Tasmota stuff here in this setup.
Can you jump from the sonoff plus stick to this one whit no problems?
Depends on what you are using software wise and what chipset and what chipset you want to go to.
@@digiblurDIY I won a SLZB-06, from Bearder Tinker giveaway.
@@digiblurDIY Stopped Z2M and did a backup, add the config stuff from the SMLight SLZB-06, Now its works whit no problems!
@Tntdruid nice! Migrating between cc2652 chips is pretty simple. Sometimes devices need a pair again due to the IEEE address change but I just rip and see what needs a kick.
@@digiblurDIY All my 71 ZigBee devices found the new cordinator.
Isn't another reason to get this if your running a a hypervisor e.g proxmox you can have backup vm's you can restore on any server and not have to worry about physically connecting your dongle
Yup! And no pass through stuff to deal with.
@@digiblurDIY that's the reason I need this 😆
Do you know if this solution also works with ZHA as well?
Yes I tested it with ZHA in this video.
somebody bought the whole stock already ..
Try this one? s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_Dk3tykB (watch the flavor selection on the page)
@@digiblurDIY bought 2 from the other link in russian/Ukrainian ?
Who else has one? Next digi live he should have a guest with one. Then connect it to a lightbulb at his house over Wireguard. It would be a killer demo. 😂
Yes! That would be awesome. I need to check out the speed of things. I'm sure it should be fine with 100ms or lower speeds.
Do you think this would work if it was inside the ceiling rather than mounted to it? I don’t think my wife would love the look of it on our ceiling 😂
Yeah as long as your ceiling isn't metal and grounded.
Lol was thinking about that too
23:20 😂😂
Lol.
Places that use metric.... Everywhere other than the USA. 😉
Yup! They lied to us in school!
LOL, cm, there's only your country dude that ain't
Lol... Indeed. Just a couple. They told us in the 80s it would be all done worldwide. Still waiting.
@@digiblurDIY p.s. love your content, really enjoy the no BS guides you do
If you are old enough you can use both metric and imperial 😎 Which country can you order a 30cm pizza? 🤣🤣
Canadian thing?
Most of the world use metric system man......
Yup! They told us in the 80's, within 10-20 years it will be all metric. LOL
Thanks.
