    My POE went down and I had to use a non-powered switch, but I used the USB from an unrelated device to power it and it sat on the LAN just like normal. Worked fine until I could replace the POE switch. I'm using straight Zigbee, haven't tried MQTT yet. It talks to 4 different brands of devices in my house. Thermos, plugs, IR blaster, dimmers, etc.. Using HA, I think it was as easy as setting the switch to pick USB or LAN and telling HA the IP and default port, then it found all the Zigbee devices when they were put in "learn" mode. No hiccups, been using for 6 months or so. HA can send OTA updates to the Zigbee devices, with a click. No complaints, handy lil guy.

    You're right about the transmit power level. The antenna in the SLZB-06 is waaay better than the antennas built into the various other devices, so reducing its power is appropriate. Very good video! So much good info, thanks!

    I’ve had one of these for a few months and it’s pretty great. Another benefit is that you can charge it with a power brick and then walk around and pair it to all of your devices so that you’re very close to them and they pair quickly. I had a few devices in the garage that refused to pair until I did this.

    • @BobSmith42
      @BobSmith42 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Personally, I would not recommend the P7 or P10 version as yet. The processor chip is the same, but the RAM, even with over 100 devices, is less than 30% used on the standard 06. It's tried and true. The M version is good for ZHA, but I would still use the standard TI chipset for Z2M for now.
    One thing I found is that a few unmanaged switches seem to not like the 100mbps ethernet chip used in the 06 versions. Some won't do the link speed negotiation. Majority work fine out of the box, but there are odd ones that give issues.

    • @digiblurDIY
      @digiblurDIY  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Exactly. Most users will be fine the the regular SLZB-06 and you can't beat the maturity of the firmware on it.

      Yes I tried it a couple years ago and it was a mess. Lots of issues with devices dropping off so I fully understood the experimental flag in Z2M. I do want to try out the new driver once it stabilizes a bit, pretty cool they redid it all.

    the antenna is not the main problem. the problem with usb dongle is the interface. USB.
    USB is not practical with virtual servers, especialy if you run a cluster of servers, the vm can move between hosts, so usb is not an option at all.

      @@digiblurDIY According to my Amazon order history, looks like I bought the Smartthings hub in Nov 2015. It was very exciting at the time! Most everything has been moved off of it to direct local HA, save for two smart plugs and four sensors, all Zigbee. Like I said, laziness. I have the ST to HA bridge running with no problems, so it works for now--except of course if the Cloud or my Internet goes down. Your video might be the inspiration to make me finally get off of ST completely.

    Correction: The entire world uses metric. Just three countries use other inferior units in their schooling systems, US and Liberia and Myanmar. Out of the three, all three are 3rd world countries so it makes sense.
    Jokes aside! As long as you know that it won't work "wired" to connect to the zigbee network, this is great. IF you also have a coordinator, and want this device to have a sort of a direct link to the server to work as a router (NOT coordinator) then this won't work. It uses POE to get power only, but it will use the normal zigbee network like any other light bulb or relay. So you may have two or three devices zigbee wired devices working as "stepping stones". But it's fine, I have this and a sonoff P dongle with a 20db antenna, and it's covering my entire home perfectly. It's just that my plan to wire this to the network did not work as I initially expected, but other than that it's been a blast.

    I currently have my ZB2MQTT setup in a RPI4 with ZigBee (ZB) USB dongle working great (IoTStack container based). As long as I can provide remote IP connectivity, can I use this device to extend my ZB network, or would it have to be a different ZB domain? In other words, my garage is 10 floors below, I can't reach it with ZB, but I have IP connectivity. Can I integrate this device into my existing ZB network and its devices get integrated into my existing ZB2MQTT, or would I need a second instance of ZB2MQTT?

    A Zigbee-to-Ethernet bridge like the one shown in this video is better than a traditional Zigbee USB dongle in a cluster environment where the HomeAssistant VM could failover to a different physical host and automatically reconnect to the bridge.
    An alternative would be to physically move the Zigbee USB adapter to the new host whenever a failover occurs, but that obviously wouldn't be automatic.

    Is it possible to use this device as a ROUTER firmware connected to the coordinator via an Ethernet cable? I'm having trouble expanding my ZigBee network. I need to take the signal to the basement of my house, but I can't do it just by using other “router devices”. In the basement, I have another router from the mesh network, so I thought about using this device with ROUTER firmware, connected via an Ethernet cable to the router, and so it connects to the coordinator device that is connected to the Raspberry where Home Assistant runs, which is connected to another mesh router at the top of the house. Does anyone know if this is possible? Thanks!

    • @digiblurDIY
      @digiblurDIY  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You can power it like that but Zigbee doesn't backhaul over ethernet to routers. That's an option for Thread but that Matter stuff is kind of a mess still.
      You could use a directional antenna if it is far as these sticks have higher power and bigger antennas than say a smart plug would. Great to make the hop.

    I don't get why you would use one of these. Isn't networking a separately powered Zigbee coordinator (rather than keeping it USB) just adding another point of failure? If the location of the co-ordinator is a problem, why not move the whole HA server centrally?

    • @digiblurDIY
      @digiblurDIY  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not tied to the HA box itself deep in a metal cabinet. Not sticking out the back of a server with an extension cable. Some may have issues with USB pass through if they use VMs. Some may use it with a multi node system and can't tie it to one host machine. Better placement in a house. Etc. Tons of reasons.

    • @wapphigh5250
      @wapphigh5250 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@digiblurDIY Sure. Thanks for the vid - really appreciate all the effort. It would need to be put on a UPS (even if it's POE) though and a simple move of the server itself might solve Zigbee issues. Adding one of these means more potential failure IMO.
