My current Zigbee coordinator is in front part of my house as this is where my router and NBN connection live. The back half of the house gets poor zigbee signal. I am planning to have network cables ran to all the rooms and the #SMLight sounds like it would create a very stable mesh network. Being fairly new to HA I appreciate the wealth of knowledge that comes from your videos.

Great video, I presently have the SONOFF Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus V2. But I find that my Aqara sensor on my garage door at times is not detected. Changing to the smlight would allow me to position it in a better location to resolve my issues. #smlight
I still run my Sonoff ZBDongle for my test environments and love them. Great engineering with the integrated heat sink and rock-solid reliability. However, there is no escaping the fact that the SLZB range with their huge antenna affords it amazing range that should improve the matter even more, possibly negating the need for so many router devices in your mesh network. Hi, sure... its super simple, basically setup as a ZigBee coordinator and then: 1) In the SLZB-06P7 web interface, go to the "Bluetooth Proxy" section. 2) Enable Bluetooth proxy functionality. This will prompt you to install ESPHome firmware. 3) Choose the "Bluetooth proxy + Zigbee" option when flashing the ESPHome firmware. 4) After flashing, the device will restart with both Zigbee and Bluetooth proxy capabilities. 5) In Home Assistant, add the ESPHome integration for the Bluetooth proxy functionality. But if you still need one I'll put it on the list :)

I’m working on a full re-do of my HA setup and it’s unlikely that I’ll be able to use my sonoff Zigbee dongle due to USB ports. A POE solution like this would be perfect. Thanks for covering the #SMLite. If I’m not lucky enough to win one, I’ll probably buy one for my new setup.
Another excellent video. I have a very flaky zigbee network as my NBN/Router/HomeAssistant setup is at one end of the house and even with powered zigbee routers I still have problems. With the SLZB-06 I'll install this centrally using POE across EOP! Hope this gives me a stable, responsive network. #SMLight.

Hi Nick To install ZHA using a SMlight SLZB-06 with Home Assistant running in a Docker container on a Synology NAS, follow these steps: 1) Connect the SLZB-06 to your network via Ethernet or WiFi. Make sure it's powered on and has obtained an IP address from your router. 2) Access your Synology NAS's web interface and open the Docker application. 3) In your Home Assistant Docker container configuration, add the following device mapping: devices: - "/dev/ttyACM0:/dev/ttyACM0:rwm" This maps the USB device to the container. Note that the exact device name may vary, so you might need to adjust it. 4) Restart your Home Assistant container for the changes to take effect. 5) In Home Assistant, go to Configuration > Integrations > Add Integration. 6) Search for and select "Zigbee Home Automation" (ZHA). 7) When prompted for the radio type, select "ZNP = Texas Instruments Z-Stack ZNP" for the SLZB-06. 8) For the serial port, enter: socket://[SLZB-06_IP_ADDRESS]:6638 Replace [SLZB-06_IP_ADDRESS] with the actual IP address of your SLZB-06 device. 9) Leave the port speed at the default 115200 and data flow control as undefined. 10) Complete the setup process in Home Assistant. @@smart_home_australia All arrived and set up!! Managed to get ZHA installed, but I have read that Zigbee2MQTT is a better option. Apparently I need to install this inside the parent HA docker folder or something though, so will try to figure out how to do that. ZHA was installed via integrations and was really simple.
@NickPowellPhotography debatable. I run both. Zha is super quick, convenient and native to HA. Z2MQTT offers more flexibility and control, but the question is do you need it.
Nice overview. But why are you deleting an existing network i.o. transferring it to the new converter (at least for similar chipsets)? I operate a network of >50 zigbee devices - repairing all of them would have been a nightmare!
This was just that it was a demo environment, hence the new network. It is possible to simply migrate to a new network by following the process of: Backup your current ZHA configuration: Go to your Home Assistant dashboard, navigate to the ZHA integration, and click on “Configure”. You’ll see an option to download a backup of your current configuration. It’s a good idea to do this to ensure you have a copy of your setup. Migrate to the new coordinator: After backing up, you can click the “Migrate Radio” button. This will allow you to switch to a new coordinator without having to re-pair all your devices. Confirm the migration: Follow the prompts to confirm the migration. Your devices should be recognized by the new coordinator, and your entity names and automations should remain intact. Best SMLight video so far. Just ordered a 06M which will replace my Sonoff Dongle E. SMLight seems to be very innovative, and it's a good way to support Ukraine.
Its a great coordiantor and very well supported. Check out the video coming up for flashing the firmware, they really have taken this to the next level for customer support and ease of use.
Will these work with zigbee hubs? I have a zemismart m1 hub, and im looking to extend range, poe functionality is a killer feature to me, but all descriptions keep mentioning home assistant and i dont want to use it
Although I have not tried it, I'd say not. Reason: The SLZB-06 is designed to work primarily with open source systems like Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, and ZHA. The Zemismart M1 hub, on the other hand, uses the Tuya platform and is designed as a standalone hub for Matter and Zigbee devices. I'm not aware, or tested, a Tuya routers, but I am sure there must be some.

Configure the 'MODE' of the SLZB as 'Router' as shown in the video. Then allow adding new devices in zigbee2mqtt and the router will be interviewed and added immediately.

Arhh the holly grail of BT on VM. I battled for ages trying to get a USB BT Dongle to work, dont bother. BT Proxy, either via SLZB or ESP32 (which I run several around the house) is the way to go. I'll add it to the list and see what I can come up with. :)
Great video. At this stage HA should be capable of having 2 or more of these in a cluster with devices be able to move between controllers. For houses with concrete walls and floors depending on mesh is a disaster. And I'd imagine devices being 4-5 hops or more from the controller is not great for consistancy or reliability. Also some router devices are not as efficient at relaying but there is no way to set that. A controller at either end of the house in a cluster would in my mind lead to more stability and coverage in concrete / block houses.
Totally agree David. Not to mention that these are a much better range simply based on their high gain antenna. When you mention clustering I assume you mean under Z2MQTT as I'm not familiar with clustering within ZHA.
I have a metal workshop /shed in the back garden and it's pretty much impenetrable to wifi and zigbee signals when the door is shut. So I would put a SLZB-O6 zigbee POE coordinator in there. Poe makes it perfect to wire up and power it, (already have network cables going into the shed), and gets the signal through the metal walls. You did mention that you can have more that one coordinator with Zigbee2MQTT - is that more than one on the same zigbee network? Or would they have to be different networks /zigbee Chanel? Really looks like #SMLight actually put some thought into these controllers, they sound great!

Sorry about that, I should have been more explicit, you can use it for either. Its a super versatile coordinator and best of all they are very well supported and they have a very active tech development so are constantly improving support. Check out the up and coming video on flashing the CC26xx range via web, this is something that has been missing on this chipset for a long time.
Have you upgraded to the Ember Firmware? I have the 06M and had issues when I upgraded the firmware - might be a Z2M issue and not the coordinator. IDK
Have you checked out Darkxst browser based flasher for SLZB-07 and SLZB-06M? darkxst.github.io/silabs-firmware-builder/ Might be the answer to a prayer for you :)
It's good practice to go into your router and find the section for the DHCP Reservation table (on my router it can be accessed in LAN > DHCP Server). Here you can set fixed IP addresses for specific devices that need to be accessed. I personally do this for my router, server, NAS, HA, POE coordinator etc. And for the remainder I leave to dynamic allocation but within a range of 192.168.x.20-255.
#SMLight - Thanks for the vid. I'd use one SLZB-06M to replace 2 Sonoff Dongle E. That way can have a central coordinator instead of a coordinator and router. #SMLight
I still like the ZBDongle, but that huge +5db antenna and easy of configuration makes the 06 range a very attractive option. Btw if you want into the draw don’t forget the # tag.
thx for very useful video. I am interesting of video with VPN configuration and also SLZB-06. I have tried Router mode with success. But be very careful which USB-C connector are you using. Common C connectors are too short to power up device!! They have only 6.5mm but SLZB-06 needs 7.2mm. You can use adapter they provide in package from USB-Micro to C. It is fine. I informed SM Light support on it.
Hi Roman, I reached out to SMLight to check on this for you, their comment is "The standard connection per Type-C specs should be 6.2mm long. If your cable meets this spec, it will work. The included micro-USB to Type-C adapter is only for those who still have micro-USB cables". They even provided the USB C Specs for reference (www.usb.org/sites/default/files/USB%20Type-C%20Spec%20R2.0%20-%20August%202019.pdf). Looks like you might have a non-spec USB-C cable. I hope that is helpful.
@@smart_home_australia Hello, the story continues. Thank you for a very detailed document. I did some further investigation and the problem is not the length of the connector but the power supply!! SLZB-06 is not ready to use USB-PD negotiation on USB power supply. My power source is Samsung Fast Charger EP-TA845 has different charging voltage levels. (3.3 to 20V). That is the problem. Normally, USB-PD C tries to negotiate the voltage level with SLZB, but there is no response. So no power. When I used the USB-Micro adapter, the voltage level is set to 5V and it works. So it was a coincidence with the length of the USB-C connector. I tried it with the shortest one I could find (6.5mm) and it works now. Final conclusion: do not use Charger with USB-PD with SLZB-06. :-)
@@romankysely Now that makes a lot more sense, thanks for taking the time to research and find out the root cause. If you are agreeable I'll pass this onto the developer and see if they have any plans to include USB-PD for their USB-C interface.
I got the SLZB-06M version, and would like to transfer all my zigbee devices without repairing all. I know on the SLZB-06 you can copy the EEEE number from one coordinator I.E a sonoff dongle e to the SLZB-06, but I cannot do it with the 06M. Is there a way of doing it without repairing all. Thanks
Hiu Craig, I heard back from the developer, "Migrating from an EFR32-based coordinator to another EFR32-based coordinator works without any pairing as well. However, we are working on a solution that will allow migration from any coordinator to the 06M." So hold tight and check the SMLight website, they advise this should be available in 1.5months. If anything changes, I'll add a comment here for you so you can migrate. :)

I have an SLZB-06 and it works great, migration from my previous controller was a breeze due to the ability to set a new IEEE address.I have one issue which no one (even SM-Light support) has comer up with an answer for. When I do a zigbee firmware flash OTA using the web UI, the UI gets stuck at "waiting for device". The firmware flash actually works, just no communication with the UI. I have to reload the page to get back to the dashboard. I have tried Chrome, Brave and Safari browsers with no luck, all with no site restrictions. Support suspect Server Side Events are being blocked, but I haven't found out where. Has anyone else seen this? And solved it?
Hi Andy, If Home Assistant goes offline, the SMLight Zigbee coordinator (such as the SLZB-07) will not be able to control the attached Zigbee devices directly. The coordinator itself relies on the software (like Home Assistant with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT) to manage and control the devices. At least this is the way that I understand it. Does anyone have a different opinion?
@@smart_home_australia of course I'm not talking about the Home Assistant automations, just the binding between say a Switch and a Bulb to turn on/off. Binding, as I read and understand, was designed for exactly that. Not sure though if it works without a coordinator, but it should work without a system like HASS...😉
@@AndyFrei they will remain bound to the coordinator but as it doesn’t have any logic behind it I don’t think that it will action anything like turned off on of the light. I just tested it here and once HA is off line no actions trigger. You can get similar action to this with IKEA devices but not when paired to HA through a zigbee coordinator.
From the official zigbee2mqtt page: Zigbee supports binding, allowing devices to directly control each other without the intervention of Zigbee2MQTT or any home automation software. The devices need to support that, of course.
Purchased and did not solve anything! Things become better when added multiple dedicated repeaters not allowing signal to go threw more than 1 conrete wall. Repeaters can be SLZB-06M or cheaper but same Sonoff zigbee dongle-E. My mistake was that I always thought that having a lot of "non battery powered" devices they will act as repeaters - but it is not true. So of them - do the job, but majority - do not implement repeater feature because its more expenses for manufacturer.
You are spot on, not all mains powered ZIgbee devices can be repeaters. If you have issues with concrete reinforced walls, I would strongly recommend multiple Zigbee coordinators connected via LAN or worst case wireless and use Z2MQTT as it can support this configuration.

Migrate to the new coordinator: After backing up, you can click the “Migrate Radio” button. This will allow you to switch to a new coordinator without having to re-pair all your devices.
Confirm the migration: Follow the prompts to confirm the migration. Your devices should be recognized by the new coordinator, and your entity names and automations should remain intact.

Best SMLight video so far. Just ordered a 06M which will replace my Sonoff Dongle E. SMLight seems to be very innovative, and it's a good way to support Ukraine.
Its a great coordiantor and very well supported. Check out the video coming up for flashing the firmware, they really have taken this to the next level for customer support and ease of use.
Will these work with zigbee hubs? I have a zemismart m1 hub, and im looking to extend range, poe functionality is a killer feature to me, but all descriptions keep mentioning home assistant and i dont want to use it
Although I have not tried it, I'd say not.
Reason: The SLZB-06 is designed to work primarily with open source systems like Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, and ZHA. The Zemismart M1 hub, on the other hand, uses the Tuya platform and is designed as a standalone hub for Matter and Zigbee devices.
I'm not aware, or tested, a Tuya routers, but I am sure there must be some.
will the SLZB-06 get the ember driver for Zigbee2MQTT? so far I've only seen updates for the SLZB-06M version
I'll check with the developer to see if the Ember drivers for the 06 to fall in line with the 06M.

Configure the 'MODE' of the SLZB as 'Router' as shown in the video. Then allow adding new devices in zigbee2mqtt and the router will be interviewed and added immediately.

Arhh the holly grail of BT on VM. I battled for ages trying to get a USB BT Dongle to work, dont bother. BT Proxy, either via SLZB or ESP32 (which I run several around the house) is the way to go. I'll add it to the list and see what I can come up with. :)
Great video. At this stage HA should be capable of having 2 or more of these in a cluster with devices be able to move between controllers. For houses with concrete walls and floors depending on mesh is a disaster. And I'd imagine devices being 4-5 hops or more from the controller is not great for consistancy or reliability. Also some router devices are not as efficient at relaying but there is no way to set that. A controller at either end of the house in a cluster would in my mind lead to more stability and coverage in concrete / block houses.
Totally agree David. Not to mention that these are a much better range simply based on their high gain antenna.
When you mention clustering I assume you mean under Z2MQTT as I'm not familiar with clustering within ZHA.
I have a metal workshop /shed in the back garden and it's pretty much impenetrable to wifi and zigbee signals when the door is shut. So I would put a SLZB-O6 zigbee POE coordinator in there. Poe makes it perfect to wire up and power it, (already have network cables going into the shed), and gets the signal through the metal walls.
You did mention that you can have more that one coordinator with Zigbee2MQTT - is that more than one on the same zigbee network? Or would they have to be different networks /zigbee Chanel?
Really looks like #SMLight actually put some thought into these controllers, they sound great!

Sorry about that, I should have been more explicit, you can use it for either. Its a super versatile coordinator and best of all they are very well supported and they have a very active tech development so are constantly improving support.
Check out the up and coming video on flashing the CC26xx range via web, this is something that has been missing on this chipset for a long time.

Have you upgraded to the Ember Firmware? I have the 06M and had issues when I upgraded the firmware - might be a Z2M issue and not the coordinator. IDK

It's good practice to go into your router and find the section for the DHCP Reservation table (on my router it can be accessed in LAN > DHCP Server). Here you can set fixed IP addresses for specific devices that need to be accessed. I personally do this for my router, server, NAS, HA, POE coordinator etc. And for the remainder I leave to dynamic allocation but within a range of 192.168.x.20-255.

I still like the ZBDongle, but that huge +5db antenna and easy of configuration makes the 06 range a very attractive option. Btw if you want into the draw don’t forget the # tag.
thx for very useful video. I am interesting of video with VPN configuration and also SLZB-06. I have tried Router mode with success. But be very careful which USB-C connector are you using. Common C connectors are too short to power up device!! They have only 6.5mm but SLZB-06 needs 7.2mm. You can use adapter they provide in package from USB-Micro to C. It is fine. I informed SM Light support on it.

Hi Roman, I reached out to SMLight to check on this for you, their comment is "The standard connection per Type-C specs should be 6.2mm long. If your cable meets this spec, it will work. The included micro-USB to Type-C adapter is only for those who still have micro-USB cables".
They even provided the USB C Specs for reference (www.usb.org/sites/default/files/USB%20Type-C%20Spec%20R2.0%20-%20August%202019.pdf).
Looks like you might have a non-spec USB-C cable.

@@smart_home_australia Hello, the story continues. Thank you for a very detailed document. I did some further investigation and the problem is not the length of the connector but the power supply!! SLZB-06 is not ready to use USB-PD negotiation on USB power supply. My power source is Samsung Fast Charger EP-TA845 has different charging voltage levels. (3.3 to 20V). That is the problem. Normally, USB-PD C tries to negotiate the voltage level with SLZB, but there is no response. So no power. When I used the USB-Micro adapter, the voltage level is set to 5V and it works. So it was a coincidence with the length of the USB-C connector. I tried it with the shortest one I could find (6.5mm) and it works now. Final conclusion: do not use Charger with USB-PD with SLZB-06. :-)
@@romankysely Now that makes a lot more sense, thanks for taking the time to research and find out the root cause. If you are agreeable I'll pass this onto the developer and see if they have any plans to include USB-PD for their USB-C interface.
I got the SLZB-06M version, and would like to transfer all my zigbee devices without repairing all. I know on the SLZB-06 you can copy the EEEE number from one coordinator I.E a sonoff dongle e to the SLZB-06, but I cannot do it with the 06M. Is there a way of doing it without repairing all. Thanks
Hiu Craig, I heard back from the developer, "Migrating from an EFR32-based coordinator to another EFR32-based coordinator works without any pairing as well. However, we are working on a solution that will allow migration from any coordinator to the 06M."
So hold tight and check the SMLight website, they advise this should be available in 1.5months. If anything changes, I'll add a comment here for you so you can migrate. :)

Nice video thanks. I have an SLZB-06 and it works great, migration from my previous controller was a breeze due to the ability to set a new IEEE address.I have one issue which no one (even SM-Light support) has comer up with an answer for. When I do a zigbee firmware flash OTA using the web UI, the UI gets stuck at "waiting for device". The firmware flash actually works, just no communication with the UI. I have to reload the page to get back to the dashboard. I have tried Chrome, Brave and Safari browsers with no luck, all with no site restrictions. Support suspect Server Side Events are being blocked, but I haven't found out where. Has anyone else seen this? And solved it?

Does anyone knows if ZigBee binding works with smlight coordinator so that control works when Home Assistant goes down?
Hi Andy, If Home Assistant goes offline, the SMLight Zigbee coordinator (such as the SLZB-07) will not be able to control the attached Zigbee devices directly. The coordinator itself relies on the software (like Home Assistant with ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT) to manage and control the devices. At least this is the way that I understand it. Does anyone have a different opinion?
@@smart_home_australia of course I'm not talking about the Home Assistant automations, just the binding between say a Switch and a Bulb to turn on/off.
Binding, as I read and understand, was designed for exactly that. Not sure though if it works without a coordinator, but it should work without a system like HASS...😉
@@AndyFrei they will remain bound to the coordinator but as it doesn’t have any logic behind it I don’t think that it will action anything like turned off on of the light. I just tested it here and once HA is off line no actions trigger.
You can get similar action to this with IKEA devices but not when paired to HA through a zigbee coordinator.
From the official zigbee2mqtt page: Zigbee supports binding, allowing devices to directly control each other without the intervention of Zigbee2MQTT or any home automation software. The devices need to support that, of course.

Purchased and did not solve anything! Things become better when added multiple dedicated repeaters not allowing signal to go threw more than 1 conrete wall. Repeaters can be SLZB-06M or cheaper but same Sonoff zigbee dongle-E.
My mistake was that I always thought that having a lot of "non battery powered" devices they will act as repeaters - but it is not true. So of them - do the job, but majority - do not implement repeater feature because its more expenses for manufacturer.
You are spot on, not all mains powered ZIgbee devices can be repeaters. If you have issues with concrete reinforced walls, I would strongly recommend multiple Zigbee coordinators connected via LAN or worst case wireless and use Z2MQTT as it can support this configuration.
