    Got my fort dahlia tubers here in the Midwest in America at tractor supply. I knew absolutely nothing about them but I plopped it into a pot and sat it right outside my door in the bright sun and now it’s flowering and I’m soooo excited!! It does seem a bit dramatic when it wants water though lol it will wilt like it’s dead and then perk right back up with water.

    Last summer we grew dahlias. Didn't feed them or water them once and they were amazing.

      Not so keen on it, a bit boring as the colours sort of match, not enough contrast, maybe white would tie in all those purples blues and silver around and the white behind.....not sure. Thing is if it doesn't work it's sooo much work moving the big pots or digging it all up so you tend to live with it. I know I've lived through some ghastly combinations.

      My problem with it is that she's mis-identifying a pretty basic plant. Those aren't Impatiens spilling out over the edge of the pot, they're Begonia boliviensis hybrids. Makes me question her level of knowledge in general.

    • @penelopehammerton2907
      @penelopehammerton2907 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marty can you honestly say you have never made mistake with a plant name. I think as Sarah gives us lots of fabulous videos (for free) and has a very successful plant and bulb business that 99.9 percent of the time she gets it right (I also cannot prove you are right and she is wrong). A kindly message in a friendly manner would have been kinder if you thought she was wrong. Did you have to be so harsh.

      I agree with you Jazz. I feel the colour of the Dahlias with a lot of foliage between the two plantings works for me. The different leaf shape of the two plants with a touch of purple is just enough of a nuance to make this combination work. Plants are like perfume very personal.

    Hot Cakes is a marvelous, Bold POP of both equally beautiful flowers. But one with the Grass!! Is alittle over over the top. All that Green Grass over powered the flower. Maybe a different kind or color of Grass?

      There is some videos on You Tube explaining all that imfo on here. I have to lift mine out, rinse off the soil on them, dry them out, store in a cardboard box with newspaper at the base, put tubers in and cover with compost, close the box lid, and store in a cool place ie the shed. I re plant them after the frosts have gone. In warmer parts of the UK you can get away with a nice deep mulch without lifting. Seems to be a lot but worth every minute.

  • @EASYTIGER10
    @EASYTIGER10 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isn't the size of Dahlia in proportion to the size of the tuber? So if it's a relatively small "one sausage" tuber, isn't that safe to put in a smallish pot?

  • @daniellemartin9371
    @daniellemartin9371 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Sarah thanks for the video. Did you sow the Panicum 'Frosted Explosion' as seeds? Does it grow like an annual in the UK or does it self-seed and grow back the next year? I live in the Netherlands and would love to create that flower pot with the Dahlias 'Totally tangerine'. Such a beautiful combination!

  • @equestanton1017

    Gosh that Impatiens looks just like a Begonia, how extraordinary.
    I think what needs impressing is that dahlias in flower prefer a very low nitrogen fert, or they grow lots of leaves instead of flowers (all varieties) and will fall over, producing soft elongated stems. During the shooting growing phase they can take slightly more nitrogen but again keep it low or the plants get too soft and tall and wont flower well. So high in potassium and phosphorus like a typical tomato feed. The giant ones like lots of compost in the ground at start as they grow like jack and the beans stalk and produce dinner plate sized flowers.
    .
    I live in the subtropics and use bought flowering pot grown plants as winter garden plants, we don't get frost so they flower for months and months in the cool dry season, full sun and need lots of watering. Soon as the humidity , heat and rain arrive in early April they wilt and rot sadly so need replacing again around January.

    Good morning, I have a little doubt and I would like you to kindly clarify it. Pompon dahlias are my weakness. Having no garden, this spring I planted a bulb of that dahlia variety in a large 40 cm pot. and, really, I am delighted as much for the amount of flowering as for the size of the flowers. My question is the following: is the size of my 40 cm pot enough? so that both Pompon dahlia plants and their flowers fully develop and the flowers are the required size? To this I must add that I pay every 15 days with the liquid fertilizer of Flower Platinum. I would be grateful if you could answer me and give me some advice to keep my Pompon dahlias in the maceton of the size that I have indicated since next spring I would like to plant the same variety in more colors. I take this opportunity to congratulate you for your wonderful videos. Thank you very much and best regards.

    Sarah, I live in the US. Is there a way to purchase tubers from you? The website doesn't allow for it and my brother and sister-in-law just put their dog Roxy down due to cancer :( I would just like to give a Roxy dahlia as a memorial gift. It is beautiful.
