Set in semi open world areas of individual hubs with RPG elements, the game follows loosely the plot of the Dragon Ball Z anime series with the player assuming the role of protagonist Goku. Other characters such as Piccolo, Vegeta, Gohan (young, teenage, adult), Future Trunks, Vegito & Gotenks have been announced as playable characters.
The game is not considered open world with one massive sandbox but instead divided into individual hubs that will be locked until reaching a certain point in the story, only then will these areas be unlocked for exploration. These individual hubs are not small and the openness of these areas gives all the more reason to have flight as a mode of travel with both the verticality and area being impressive. Some areas are full of life and cities whilst others are more barren and devoid of life.
Flying will be a huge aspect of the game and the main form of travel to objectives and other parts of the map unless running at super speeds is preferred, the nimbus cloud will also be a mode of transport and for the Ultimate Edition the Tao Pai Pai Pillar will be available. Flying has been described as archaic and feels like controlling a “helicopter” and will take some getting used to.
During general gameplay and flight the game handles like a typical third-person game, when fighting the perspective changes to an over-the shoulder fighting game. Fighting is a mix between typical punches, kicks, dodging and ki-blasts with special moves and combos involved.
Outside of combat you are free to explore the different locations, collect minerals with ki-blasts and fish. The emphasis on RPG progression sets this game apart from typical fighting games, Goku will not start with his most powerful moves with them only being unlocked through the skill tree and progression through the story. There are five different ways to power up; eating, battling, finding ki-orbs and creating communities. Linking characters to community leaders of different types can maximise experience gain. Orbs found in the world through exploration are the main currency for progressing the skill tree. Meals are important as foraging for fruit or crafting dishes at a cook can incur permanent stat increases. By fighting in battles experience points will be gained, choose your battles and make sure your character is at the adequate level before engaging.
Another activity besides the side quests is fishing, fishing is played as a sort of mini game with requested buttons needing to be pressed at the precise moment. Playing as Goku will see him pulling out, attaching and fishing with his tail, this was done as a homage to the original anime series. The reasons why Goku has his tail will be further explained in the story.
Side quests do not need to be completed but they do play a part of the story which is being told with many closing the gaps that were created in the anime, side quests are also a great way to find extra loot and gain experience points. The game is estimated to be 30 hours of gameplay if only the story and some side quests are completed. If you are a completionist and complete all side quests and story the game is estimated at over 100 hours.

Not gonna lie, the cutscene when Super Perfect Cell appeared after death was visually spectacular.
Wow! That little Android 16 and Gohan moment makes the SSJ2 transformation more powerful. I'm so glad they added it--a connection between the two was something that was badly needed in the original IMO.
The entire Goku and chi-chi interaction all I was thinking was "Go for ten...go for 10!" 😂

you do realize he could have very easily edited it together in between levels?
It's interesting to note that in this game, they went with Vegeta caring about Trunks that got him so enraged he attacks Cell head-on, since in the Kai version he just wants to be the one that beats Cell instead of Gohan, which got him angry.
Vegeta always got mad for Trunks's death, even in both the manga and anime, i dont know what version you watch but that's definitely some mistake

It’s more of the manga adaption of DBZ formed into an anime, there’s lots of things diffrent about from the actual anime.

I went to the location of Cell's time machine just after Trunks killed Freeza to see if Cell really was there before Trunks as he should be in this timeline and guess what: there is no time machine xD (it would've been a cool secret to see and the characters could says something like "this looks familiar.." or not comment at all)

Future Trunks: I’ll guide you. Androids 19 and 20. This is very different from the future I’m from. Well, here I go!
Three years later, the androids finally appear in town. Goku tries to fight them off, but a strange heart condition cripples his efforts. At that time, Vegeta appears before Goku.
Future Trunks: I unlocked a new battle. Father is wrong! We cannot let him achieve his perfect form.
Vegeta had trained in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and gained powers that exceed Cell’s second form. Cell provokes Vegeta, saying that if he were in his perfect form he would win. Insulted, Vegeta allows Cell to absorb Android 18.
Future Trunks: I unlocked a new battle. Cell’s body has finally been completed. I will defeat him!
Cell’s body is finally complete. He takes on both Vegeta and Trunks, calling it a warm up, in order to show off his frightening power.
Future Trunks: I unlocked a new battle. It’s the first match of the Cell Games. Goku will probably do something.
Cell opens a martial arts competition, the Cell Games, so he can enjoy the ultimate fight. The first challenger is Goku.
Future Trunks: I unlocked a new battle. I can’t believe those Cell Juniors... They’re equal to my Super Saiyan form...
Cell creates the Cell Juniors and has them attack the Z Fighters to draw out Gohan’s hidden powers. Gohan’s anger finally reaches it’s limits after seeing the Z Fighters beaten one after another.
Future Trunks: I unlocked a new battle. That’s insane! Cell blew himself up and has become even stronger.
Goku uses Instant Transmission to take the self-destructing Cell to King Kai’s planet. However, Cell was able to regenerate, and was able to power up even more. Gohan is the only hope for Earth. Now, Gohan and Cell’s final deciding battle will begin.
Future Trunks: I unlocked a new battle. This will finish everything. Cell, I won’t let you go back to the past!
Trunks has gained incredible powers from training in the past. He returns to the future and easily crushes 17 and 18. Three years later, Trunks attempts to prevent Cell from going to the past. Trunks’ last battle starts.
Future Trunks: Finally, Cell’s gone.
Mr. Satan/Hercule: Hey, boy! What are you doing here?
Future Trunks: Hey, aren’t you...
Mr. Satan/Hercule: Yes, I’m the World’s Martial Arts Champion, the great Mr. Satan/Hercule! I’ve come to exterminate Majin Buu.
Future Trunks: Majin Buu? Who’s that? Should I tell Goku and the others?
Mr. Satan/Hercule: Goku? Oh, the blonde guy that uses the tricks? There’s no need to worry. Well, I’m off to exterminate Majin Buu.
Future Trunks: Hope he’ll be alright.
Thanks to Gohan and the other’s actions, Cell’s threat is ended. Peace returns to Earth. Until a new threat appears, there is a brief time of peace …

Man as great as the game was in following the story line I praised it for being the first game to actually have Frieza be cut in half. Every other game either censored it or didn't bother creating a model for him during the cut scene to be cut in half and that always irritated me. Here is a game that finally does that but when it comes to the Cell Juniors that should be destroyed by Gohan brutally being decapitated and maimed then exploding they don't do it. Can we just get ONE DBZ game that shows all the gory bits?

In the actual show. Cell was not given a fair chance. They all teamed up on him. He didn’t get his 1 on 1 fight. It took them all to defeat him. Definitely not a fair fight.
I hope cell does return. With even his own show and open world game. Would be cool for sure.

My copy has a problem.... you play as Gohan right? The main story area where I'm supposed to go didn't change & I went to Goku's house but I didn't get the cutscene where Goku says we'll rest for 3 days x3. & when I go inside Goku's house there's two chi chis... I'm still Gohan but when I go to characters it's showing up as Goku. But I'm playing as Gohan. Am I locked from advancing further in the game do I really have to start over?

You're Probably wondering why I'm still alive... Allow me to explain... i have a small mass inside of me... as long as that mass remains intact, my body can continue to regenerate... Once regenerated, I not only regain my perfect form, but my power also increases not unlike Gohan's... This must be due in part to the Saiyan cells I possess and their impressive ability to increase one's strength an resilience with every near-death experience I have... I was also able to learn Goku's Instant Transmission which, I suppose, makes me more perfect than, well, perfect !
