If you put a paper towel on top of your salad before putting on the lid, it will draw the moisture from the veggies and keep the salad fresher longer.❤
802? 802?! Holy smokes! He's so fortunate he didn't have a heart attack or stroke! It would terrify me when my late husbands sugar would hit 600. I thank the good Lord for prompting you to get him to the doctor! My husband loved pistachios, and when he was following his diet, they did the job nicely for snacks (he was a grazer...he loved to snack.) You're doing great so far in caring for him. 😊 It's easy to see how much you love each other.
Oh I do love him with all that is in me and I was petrified when they said he had diabetes. I am researching everything I can to get and keep him healthy. I think his is genetic because all his siblings and mother were diabetic.
@@LittleVillageHomesteadThere's a very strong genetic link. It tore through my husband's family, and it struck several of my own family. Thankfully, in most cases, it can e controlled. My best friend's husband quit beer and watches his diet, and his is well under control. As long as John makes the right choices and has you there with him, he should be good to go. ❤ And...peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches?? OMG. That's so wrong!
Old diabetes nurse here. You really don't need to do low carbs. What you need are low glycemic carbs (those that take a while to break down). So think whole wheat, quinoa, barley, buckwheat, soba, etc. Whole wheat tortillas would work well. I'd try to find a diabetic educator near you and go talk to them.
Your top is so pretty :) I was diagnosed diabetic about ten years ago, but with diet change I have gone back to prediabetic numbers...never had to do the insulin, but I like the new recipe ideas of healthy foods and snacks. I so need to clean up my diet more; I have so much weight to lose and health to regain from better eating. Hope we see some more diabetic friendly dishes in the future. My daughter is a diatician and she said that the diabetic diet is the way everyone should eat, we'd be a healthier nation.
I am a diabetic and just want to say, be very careful of artificial sweeteners in anything, cuz if you eat to much of that, it will give you the serious trots. I still eat pretty much anything I want, portion control is a big thing as well as clean eating. Good Luck John, and believe me, you are in excellent hands, because your wife will take Good care of you! ❤
😊You are such a wonderful, loving wife taking care of your husband's diabetic needs. This diet is not so bad after you get used of it. Its quite a healthy diet. Eggs for a snack are a no brainier. I've been diabetic for 23 years now. I now have my diabetes under control thanks to the guidance of a wonderful Dr. If taken care of, he will do just fine. God bless you both for all you do for others! So enjoy your videos. ❤
I love your attitude and your videos. Watching this really made me smile, not that your family is going through a tough time but that you seem to find the bright side of things. I hope you and your family take care and I'm so glad I found your channel. We need more good vibes like yours in the world!
I am also diabetic and have been for almost 30 years. Putting together an area in the fridge with good snacks is a great idea, but also remember how quickly blood sugars will drop. May I suggest along with the good snacks a bottle of some kind of fruit juice, I use orange juice, about one quarter of a cup. Also, a chocolate candy bar to stop the immediate drop while you get your snack from the refrigerator. The candy bar can be cut up in a plastic bag and put in the refrigerator because you don’t want to eat but a piece or two. Of course, check this out with your doctor, dropping blood sugar can be scary the first few times it happens. It sounds like he has a caring support system that will be there for him. You have given me much enjoyment on my IPad, I hope this can return the favor. Good luck and best wishes.
I'm Diabetic and one of my favorite snacks are those mini peppers cut in half and i spread a bit of cream cheese on the one side and sprinkle it with everything bagel seasoning or put it on cucumbers , so good.
Borderline diabetic here... Eating oatmeal and fruit every day for breakfast has really helped me. My doctor says I don't need to take metformin but to be careful with my carb intake. Eating oats has also helped with weight loss. It's hard to manage because I'm a huge meat and potato gal but I want to live!
I'm a type 2 diabetic and one snack I really like is I take those small peppers cut them in half put a very 😮small amount of the whipped cream cheese and sprinkle everything bagel on them. It's very good.
You are the kindest person ! Having snacks ready is the best idea ,not just for John but for us all ! Your neighbors are the luckiest people ! Thanks for sharing your life ,I love it so much !
When I do my prep, I don't have chickens so I put my veggie scraps into a freezer bag and throw them into the freezer until it's full. When full. I turn them into a veggie broth in my instant pot and use that for soups and liquid when cooking my pasta or potatoes in my instant pot...that means no waste.
You can add tuna or chicken to the egg salad to change it up sometimes, for a bit of variety, and it will still be diabetic friendly. I'm a type 2 diabetic too.
Thank you so very much for including diabetic/high blood pressure snacks. Storing nuts in freezer was a new tip for me. I will be making your egg salad and a tossed salad this evening. Freezing sliced peppers and onions too. I love fried bacon and cabbage with a dash of lemon juice. I never thought to cook it with onion or in a large amount to snack on. I hardly ever cooked it because I was the only one to eat it. Now I will make the effort to keep it as a healthy staple in the fridge for myself as I love it cold as well. I am motivated to get back in the kitchen right now. I said to my husband, "I wish you were my mother." His reply was, "I wish they were our neighbours!" I also love when your family and friends visit too. 🙋♀️Hi Friends!!
I read somewhere once, that eating too much fat causes diabetes, and then after that,, is when the body cannot tolerate most sugar. For sweeteners, stevia and monk fruit are great replacements for sugar! You just have to learn the correct replacement ratios! 😊❤❤🙏
Goodness, 802 is a scary number. I'm so glad you got him to go to the doctor when you did. You're very fortunate that he was diagnosed so quickly...it often doesn't happen that way.
After I fry the bacon, I add a chopped onion to the grease and saute for a few minutes then add minced garlic and cook until it blooms, I then add the chopped cabbage with salt and pepper. I stir it all together and let cook. If it starts getting dry, I add a bit of water. It's DO Good!
A lot of people think diabetes deals with only the amount of,until of sugar you consume. You are so smart to account for the many sugars that come from eating carbs. When I ate low carb, I learned to embrace vinegar and oil as a salad dressing. I also used sweetener in place of sugar. I know many viewers probably don’t like the thought of a sugar replacement, but it’s better than cravings you can’t satisfy that make you cheat on the diet. Mayo has less carbs than Miracle Whip. You already mentioned the spaghetti squash replacement for pasta. Sugar free raspberry vinaigrette on spinach leaves with a little fruit . Yum. Celery sticks filled with peanut butter. Peanut butter filled romaine leaves.
Renae, I see so many people suggesting peanut butter as a healthy snack which it can be. But be careful which peanut butter you buy. So many are made with added sugar. Watch your labels. Natural peanut butter is great, but it will separate. Skippy has half the carbs of Peter Pan or Jif. Store brands vary. You have to read the labels every time.
Hi Renea and John! He’s a lucky man to have you taking care of him. He does need to have a little chocolate just to keep his brain functioning properly, that’s what my dad’s doctor told him. A little splurge once a week and he won’t feel so deprived. Have a blessed day you two!
Hi Renee. I’m diabetic as well and I buy Flat Out Flat Bread. They have several varieties and some are lower in carbs than others. They make awesome wraps and I’ve even used them to make a pizza
The G Hughes sugar free sauces are wonderful. They are sold at Walmart. Also the sweet baby ray’s sugar free is really good. As are the bushes sugar free baked beans. He can also have 100% whole wheat bread and tortillas.
I bet that cabbage and bacon would be awesome in an egg roll. I just got 4 pounds of coleslaw mix and was trying to figure out what to do with it. I'm making egg rolls. Thanks for another great video. I love them.
That was my situation. Lost over 100 lbs and wasn't diabetic any longer. Over the years & some weight gain, im pre-diabetic now. Watching my diet alot more lately
My highblood pressure was from my type 2, I lost 75 lbs then started passing out had to half my blood pressure meds. My sodium was actually low. I have to have salt on my nuts. Infact I found recipes from you that help me do it. The cabbage lasagna. Blessings its a hard road.
I have diabetes 2, diet and exercise has helped me a lot! I’ve gone from 300 pounds to 180! I have even had some of the diabetes medication taken away because I’ve done so good! I’m now 70 years old and health! I don’t eat pork, it’s not a healthy meat!
Hey there! I am diabetic as well and I learned how to keep my glycemic index lowered a little better and wanted to share it with you too! When he is eating his meals , if he eats his fiber first (beans , broccoli, collard greens , Brussels, artichokes, nuts , etc) then eats his protein and then eats his healthy starch- (sweet potato, etc ). It will allow the food to properly process the glycemic index of the food in his body. The fibrous foods coat the intestines allowing the other food to properly absorb the nutrients , carbs and sugars . Eating my fiber first , then protein and then healthy starch (if I want to add a healthy starch -most times I just eat veggies and protein) has significantly helped my a1c! I’m proud of ya for making all those changes immediately. He is lucky to have you… and vice versa .
Just found your channel. You r so Blessed to have your family. Lost my parents in my early teens never knew my grandparents n my brothers and sisters we r not close. I wasn't Blessed with children. But God is good and sent me my dog
Renea, just a heads up from a diabetic……. The most frustrating thing about being diabetic is that once family gets a little knowledge about diabetes, they will become John’s food inspectors/police. Tell them SHHHHH let him figure out how he feels and if it’s ever ok to splurge on something otherwise he will get frustrated and throw in the towel on being healthy. Also food fatigue will go in cycles it’s hard always thinking about how many carbs one should have
❤ I hope she reads your message. Because you are 100% right. Everyone suddenly becomes a Dr. And the food police, you need to shut them up right from the begining. Great advise ! Renee is his ecourangement. My daughter-in-law diagnosed when she was 9yrs, she is now 32yrs old and doing great. So from experience, again what you said, is 100% correct !
Hi Renee, I hope you read your messages from this video. Someone posted a comment, and she is 100% correct. I commented on her commet that it was nicley said. You n Hubby have got this, ❤
Renea, check with your hospital. A lot of times they do or know of where a nutrition class is held for diabetics. They will help you with things he can and can’t eat. My hospital does a free class with lot of information.
I eat whole wheat bread and buns. I am diabetic and I do have sweets from time to time but I have Dexcom G 7. I can check my numbers on my phone. I love it I hated sticking my fingers! But we need a good channel for us diabetics
Love love love fried cabbage with bacon and onions but I'm the only one that will eat it also! Sometimes you just gotta make a big batch to have for a few days!!!!
I’m a nurse and a few years ago I missed all the signs of diabetes with my sister. She ended up lifeflighted with a glucose of 1200 and an a1c af 17.8. She was seizing nonstop for days. Thankfully we got to a good hospital and she did well. But it’s scary that even if u know what to watch for u can miss stuff. Good luck John. Just follow ur own thing and don’t be so strict that u will not be able to maintain the lifestyle. My sister went from drinking regular pop and koolaid to drinking sugar free everything. She was so overwhelmed at first
thank you for the nut storing tip! Holy moly 802 is a high threshold some would have been in a coma, wow. Thank God you took him to the doc!!!! He must be feeling soooooo much better! I’m going to try your cabbage recipe! The two of you are just so darn adorable together ❤
G Hughes makes a sugar free French dressing and many other sugar free sauces like Bbq sauce. I’m not sure if you’ll find them in your small town but Walmart has quite a few flavors. If you would like to make some homemade sugar free French dressing, there’s a blog called All day I dream about food that I find a lot of recipes that she turns into low carb/ keto. I use the Lakanto monk fruit sweetener in most of the recipes I make of hers.
If you could find some good old fashioned recipes for dressings to put on salads I would love to see you do a video on that if you had time. I know you have older cookbooks. Thank you for sharing you journey. 🩷
My husband is diabetic and he says that the higher his blood sugar goes, the hungrier he gets, and when he eats more, his sugar goes even higher. It’s a vicious cycle until he gets it under control. You’ll get this, especially with you helping him. He’s lucky to have you!
The higher your blood sugar, the more insulin your body produces. Insulin makes you feel hungry. The only way to break the cycle is to reduce insulin levels. It’s not easy but it can be done naturally. There are many videos on TH-cam about that.
Hello Renea from Akron, Ohio!! Oh my goodness!! I think I’m smelling cooked cabbage and it smells sooo good! Thank you so much for the tip on chopping up eggs!! What a great trick!! Thank you thank you thank you kiddo!! God bless!!🥰. PS. When boiling eggs ( my tip. Lol). Put your eggs. In your pan like you did, and when they come to a full boil, turn them off and leave them sit for about 10-15 minutes . That way you don’t have to worry about them over cooking. 💕
I so enjoy watching ur channel esp when u do freezer meals. I've purchased things from peoples channels for me to use but never bought anything for any TH-camr I've watched. Total was the day. I've heard u mention on several videos that u still haven't bought a salad spinner. No need to buy one. Just ordered u one off Amazon. U should receive it Friday. No thanks needed just enjoy and healthy planning and cooking. Let me know if u don't get it. I know how Amazon can be with delivery.
Hi Renea!!! I liked everything you showed us today. It was a good video. I'm a fan of fried cabbage also. Anyways... Thanks for the ideas. Nice Video!!!...🦋
Renee, they have no carb tortillas and they have keto which is low carb and they do have keto bread also but I don’t know how it taste but the no carb tortillas are not bad at all and I’m a diabetic so I can eat those he just hast to watch things with added sugar not only added sugar corn syrup and all the other stuff that they put in it it’s hard but I don’t have to take insulin I’m a type two diabetic and my A1c right now is very well under control.. I know that hunger thing I used to have it too I’d be eating all night long I couldn’t get enough to eat I need a big meal and five minutes later I’m hungry again you’ll just have to learn to control it and as soon as the blood sugar gets under control you see that goes away.. i’m glad he’s starting to feel better..
I really love fried cabbage! Your doing so good preparing healthy snacks for John! It's so hard to come up with meals but it will all get better as you make the changes! I boil chicken and add that to my hubby's salad or with salad on the side. I will try the spaghetti squash you mentioned . Never think of that in place of pasta! i'm reading everyones comments and see great advice! Thanks Renea!
Renae you are such a a wonderful wife you show your love in all you do your giving and so kind your such a worker loved your video I would love your fried cabbage and bacon❣️ Shelby
Hi Renea, I love that cabbage recipe. I thought about Keto bread as a low carb source for your husband to eat. There are many recipes on youtube. Just a suggestion. That way he can still have bread that won't have a negative impact on his insulin. Thanks for all the great snack suggestions.
I use my hamburger chopper when I make egg salad. It works great as well, but that is a great tip about the pastry blender. I actually made eggs today for egg salad, so we are on the same page. I am also a Type 2 Diabetic. By the way, Walmart has Keto Tortillas by Oroweat, but for an even lower carb count, I usually get mine on Amazon. I like the Mr. Tortilla brand.
"Government cheese". I remember that from when I was a kid but was not aware that it still existed. I believe that is the way it should still be done: powdered milk, bagged flour, boxed cheese, bagged sugar, etc. the staples and canned goods...no check to cash and buy drugs and alcohol with, no coupons that can be traded for cash...just staples. (Whole foods is not an economical place to shop.)
my hubby is diabetic and hes learnt to do it all and he said to me ur better having a little bit of sugar instead of sugar free the artificial sweetner is more harmhis reading was 30 and was rushed in hozzy and thts when we were told he was diabetic he used to dring 3 2ltr bottles of juice pop a day so hes got it under controll now he injects twice a day
In our household we all eat as if we are diabetic. Why? They do this to support me. When there are special occasions and the grandkids visit we let them each pick a salty snack and a sweet snack for a treat. When they head home they get to take it with them so I’m not tempted. I still cheat occasionally but moderation is key. I love chocolate. I eat chocolate. Just occasionally vs every day. Too much fruit causes me to spike. So I choose berries. It is tricky sometimes. I am allowed 45 carbs per meal. Sometimes I go over a little bit, but sometimes I’m under. My breakfast consists of eggs with avocado & chaffle. My lunch is usually a lettuce wrap filled with Tuna or chicken salad. I eat a home canned beans and soups. We are meat eaters. Before bed every night I drink a shot of dill pickle juice. They say it’s healthy and lowers blood sugar. Who knows?!? Just take one meal at a time.
That is wild, a couple months ago when you said he eats and then gets sleepy and takes a nap I wanted to ask if he had been checked for diabetes. But I didn’t want to be one of those pushy people. I found out I am diabetic because I had trouble staying awake every day after lunch. Love you videos. You keep me company in the kitchen
I am interested in how you are helping Mr Wayna with his sugar level. I have a family member recently diagnosed with that so I would enjoy some good cooking ideas. Thank you for sharing this.❤
Hate to hear John has diabetes as I have it too. I’m looking forward to seeing all your new ideas and recipes you will be coming up with as I feel I eat the same things all the time trying to control it.
Blood sugar goes high and sometimes low..glucose sweets..to suck on in case of a hypo..just as dangerous as hyper. to stabilise blood sugar levels..diabetics need sugar ..natural forms of fruit.. eggs..casseroles and vegetables.. regards Karolyn Melbourne
If you put a paper towel on top of your salad before putting on the lid, it will draw the moisture from the veggies and keep the salad fresher longer.❤

Oh, geewiz, I forgot to say, the fried cabbage is Great ! I love it. Ive been making roasted cabbage steaks . Easy n great.
I love the line I couldnt eat that in a nightmare!!😂😂😂
Renea, check with your hospital. A lot of times they do or know of where a nutrition class is held for diabetics. They will help you with things he can and can’t eat. My hospital does a free class with lot of information.
I eat whole wheat bread and buns. I am diabetic and I do have sweets from time to time but I have Dexcom G 7. I can check my numbers on my phone. I love it I hated sticking my fingers! But we need a good channel for us diabetics
yummy!!!! Blue cheese dressing is usually sugar free and/or very low carb (which converts to sugar). Check the brands at your local store .
I have had diabetes for 24yrs it runs in my family you can have a little sweet every now and then😊
Love love love fried cabbage with bacon and onions but I'm the only one that will eat it also! Sometimes you just gotta make a big batch to have for a few days!!!!
I love fried cabbage but I don’t put bacon in it! I love how you talk to us like we’re in the room!
She was so overwhelmed at first
I didn't know the egg sandwich mix could keep a week!! 😯 I love egg sandwiches! ❤️
Nice video, I love cooked cabbage and sometimes we add noodles.🎉
I am addicted to zatarans cajun sausage with onion and cabbage i make huge batches then freeze in single servings .
Add cooked rice to your cabbage dish, and cook it in the pan all together, it becomes lukewarm and lazy cabbage roll. ❤
thank you for the nut storing tip!
The two of you together so naturally, its just the most beautiful thing in the world❤!
Great tip using the pastry blender for chopping the eggs!❤
Your videos are not boring. I spend a lot of time in my kitchen also. ❤
Well thank you so much.
I LOVE peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwich! And I’m originally from Michigan. Raised on them. 😋
New sub here! I just love hearing you talk, love your energy! You’re a sweetheart ❤
Hi Renea!!! I liked everything you showed us today. It was a good video. I'm a fan of fried cabbage also. Anyways... Thanks for the ideas. Nice Video!!!...🦋
Great ideas...its the best way to stock your fridge no matter what your dietary guidelines.❤
Renae, my favorite dinner is boiled Cabbage, potatoes, turnips and ham. Yummy!
Fave breakfast is fried cabbage the next morning. Oh yes and thank you.
Great video! I never thought of putting nuts in the freezer! Great idea:) Thank you for the ideas on preparing foods and the salad looks yummy!
The camera angles in this video are amazing! Great job!
The kids in my neighborhood are always in my yard, too. Some were here for a couple of hours. Its fun. I love fried cabbage, i dont make it enough.
I haven’t seen government cheese since I was 15 and visited Louisiana. I’m 51 now.
I use my pastry blender to cut up my eggs for egg salad, sure saves time.
The pastry blender does work perfect for making egg salad.
Renae you are such a a wonderful wife you show your love in all you do your giving and so kind your such a worker loved your video I would love your fried cabbage and bacon❣️ Shelby
Hoooo that pan is a biggin! I love it and so need one!!
Hi Renea, I love that cabbage recipe. I thought about Keto bread as a low carb source for your husband to eat. There are many recipes on youtube. Just a suggestion. That way he can still have bread that won't have a negative impact on his insulin. Thanks for all the great snack suggestions.
I love fried cabbage. I sometimes fry some up with ground beef and onions. Sometimes I cut up some potatoes and add it too it.
I’m sorry John. Listen to your beautiful wife and doctor...they will keep you healthy. Love, hugs and blessings always. 🦋🥰🙏💕
Yum!! Egg salad in a lettuce wrap!
Nice video. Fried cabbage is so good!
Those mini bell peppers would be good with stuffed cheese and wrapped in a piece of bacon. Cooked in oven till crisp
I use a box grater to do my boiled eggs for egg salad
Those are great too.
my hubby is diabetic and hes learnt to do it all and he said to me ur better having a little bit of sugar instead of sugar free the artificial sweetner is more harmhis reading was 30 and was rushed in hozzy and thts when we were told he was diabetic he used to dring 3 2ltr bottles of juice pop a day so hes got it under controll now he injects twice a day
That cabbage looks delicious.
These latest videos have come at a great time for us. We just found out my husband s A1C is elevated. Sp now I know some things to do.
Oh John I am so sorry but Renea is a great cook and you will be on the mend in no time God Bless
My best drink is water water and water, never enough water I have diabetes type 2 , I am not on insalin. When M. Wayna waves I wave back

I am interested in how you are helping Mr Wayna with his sugar level. I have a family member recently diagnosed with that so I would enjoy some good cooking ideas. Thank you for sharing this.❤
I love peanut butter and mayo … got the habit from my dad … great combo !!
It is nice to see someone cook for a diabetic
Hate to hear John has diabetes as I have it too. I’m looking forward to seeing all your new ideas and recipes you will be coming up with as I feel I eat the same things all the time trying to control it.
Blood sugar goes high and sometimes low..glucose sweets..to suck on in case of a hypo..just as dangerous as hyper. to stabilise blood sugar levels..diabetics need sugar ..natural forms of fruit.. eggs..casseroles and vegetables.. regards Karolyn Melbourne
Glad lock bags seal every time
To dice my eggs I use a shredder like you would use to make coleslaw works so good and gets them nice and fine
