great job! Please do not apologize for being new and a novice with quilting. We all have to learn somewhere, and somehow. I have been sewing for 40 years, I used to mainly make clothes, but I made a few quilts. The 1st one I made was for my oldest daughter when I was pregnant. She recently turned 37 and still treasures it to this day, and her 2 children have even used it a few times. I STILL make mistakes, and I STILL learn new things all the time! If I may make a suggestion, instead of pinning your placemats when quilting, because they are small, a great (and much less painful) way to sandwich your backing to the batting and quilted top, is washable, non toxic glue! Yes, good old Elmer's school glue. It washes out and you only use small dots in multiple places between the backing and the batting. You iron it after putting the dots of glue between the layers to dry it. It will save you you from painful pin pokes and dots of blood on your projects. Check out the videos here on youtube. Lisa Capon Quilts has some GREAT videos on using glue, as do many other quilters. Again, great job! Don't sell yourself short, and homemade, is made with love!
I have been sewing for many years, this is the first time I have seen anyone use bias tape for binding place mats. Absolutely brilliant. Good job. Thanks for the great tutorial.
These are really cute placemats however when you are getting ready to sew the strips together on the batting go ahead and start with a completed sandwich (backing with right side down, batting and then add the pieces) just as you did before. That way when you have the top done, you also have the quilting done on the bottom so that all you have to do then is to trim the edges and add the binding. I love your jelly roll idea though.
I've made placemats and runners this way and found that the quilting done while putting the strips together is sufficient. Just stitch around the perimeter before binding. They look great. And love those Walmart jelly rolls.
I brought these exact jelly rolls last year. Got 4 of them. I have been trying to figure out what to do with them. Now I know. Lol. Your video is much better then another I watched for this type of placement.

I learned a new way to make placemats & I will definitely try this with the exception of the bias tape for binding. The bias tape is small for me to handle so I'll just make my own binding.

Well done for a beginner. May I suggest that you can cut out a step by putting the backing fabric under the batting before you start to quilt as you go on the top. This way it is all done in one step. Hope that helps in the future.
The Walmarts in my area either haven't gotten this fabric, already sold out or won't get it - lol! Great tutorial and they're beautiful! The only thing I would say is that when you add your binding, if you would start it going in the other direction all the excess fabric would be to the left of the presser foot and not bunch up under the "harp" of the sewing machine - if that makes sense. The harp is the space from the right of the needle to where the machine curves - for those that don't know. Also, if you don't have them you should pick up some Wonder Clips. They are really handy to use in place of pins when sewing on binding and other bulky edges.

Try using the Wonder Clips when binding. They’ve helped me immensely. I also suggest using a Clover sewing stiletto or That Purple Thang to save your fingers when holding the fabric under the needle for precise sewing. All are available on Amazon. I can’t wait to start my placemats! 😊

I have been purchasing Walmart fabric for a while now. The prices are incredibly great. The quality of everything I have bought there is amazing. My only problem is I have to travel a bit because the Walmart nearest me doesn't sell fabric anymore. I always find the colors and combinations that I'm looking for. I'm not one to push Walmart but definitely go there for fabric.
It's refreshing seeing someone sew with something other than Moda fabrics. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful but expensive fabric that not everyone can afford. Beautiful things can be made with less expensive fabric. You just have to understand that the life of the fabric won't be as good. But I'm fine with that for most things.

Hi Nell. Such a great tutorial. You rock! I would suggest picking up a package of quilter’s pins. They look similar to safety pins but are slightly bent to make it easier to pin your quilt sandwich. Would it be possible to add the backing onto the sandwich at the beginning so you are essentially quilting all three layers at the same time?
Probably! I would definitely recommend a walking foot though...that's a lot of loose layers to be trying to sew together. Part of why I did the top first before adding the bottom was to minimize slipping. But, if you pinned everything together really well and/or used a walking foot, you could probably get away with it!

Hi, I know this thread is several months old but I have to comment. I am not a night worker, just an old lady with a lot on her mind. I also sometimes fall asleep to FlossTube. I have a handful of soothing voice, calm ladies that I like to watch when my mind will not stop and I fall asleep. Nell is definitely one of them. You didn’t mention this but when quilting if you make your stitches longer, about 3.5 you will find a better quilting technique 😄

We quilters say “there is no such thing as quilting police.” You are doing fine. The mats are very cool in those fabrics.
depending on mfg on measuring the pinked edges. some measure from outside and some from inside. always good to measure strip before sewing
