770 is a little less harsh on the vocals but the 990 sounds amazing with instruments, especially the electric guitar, it opened that tone right up.
I have the 770 in my home studio and with the price range of this mic it's the best I've came across with a great quality sound

The 990 has too much high frequency, the 770 is smoother and works better with vocals. But the 990 sounds good with instruments.

Jeffry Copps which one? Hi hats probably won’t sound great on the 990 unless you reduce the treble. But that’s just my gas station 2 cents

the 770 was picking up outside cars n planes. THe 990 seemed to be focused on the direct sound in its path.
It has a good trait of absorbing sharper hi pitch voices.
I still use the BLizzard :)
I agree. I have the 770 myself... though when you look at the freq-response curves of the two, it seems like the 990 would be smoother on the top-end.

The tone on the 990 seemed much brighter too, not only louder. Definitely seems like both would be a good choice!

The 990 is considerably brighter. More sibilance on vocals. Sounded harsher overall on all of the recorded material. MXL 770 FTW!
story time with the mxl 990 back then i was actually 12 i think when i went to an instrument store because i was looking for a microphone.The salesperson recommended me the mxl 990 and oh my gosh it was 800$ in my country .My mom's face immediately changed

Here in Germany you can get the 770 for ~80€ and the 990 for ~85€

Definitely prefer what the 770 did with the vocals. Too much high frequency presence with the 990. This could easily be fixed with some simple parametric EQ adjustment, but still seems the 770 is nicer in general for vocals

The 990 sounds clearer for me. The 770 sounds good as the Samson C01

I would like to see this comparison with a good interface. Focusrite doesnt cut it, your gain is much too weak. Try an Audient or Universal Audio.

the 990 is better. more bright and less muddy, and yeah Audio is very Subjective, some people prefer muddy to clear, It just felt to my ears that the 990 is more Bright? if that's the word to use? it may be cheaper but the 990 sounds better...and another channel recommends it for a budget voice over mic, due to it being brighter
A good video. I always enjoy the versus videos. If I understand correctly, the 990 is only really intended for Guitar Center / Musician's Friend, though of course you can find it available from a few other sellers, whereas the 770 is more of a general retail microphone and more readily available.
I think you may be right. The 990 is also meant to be sold as a package 990/991.

You said the 770? The 990 clearly had more dynamics and clarity. Anyone who who demo a Cardioid mic without a pop filter or shock mount is, well I’ll be nice and leave it at that.

990 has a better overall sound for the guitar cabs and acoustic. The vocals were crisp and loud compared to the 770. I record a lot fo rock music and I'd use the 990 for everything and have a nice loud crisp recording. There is this thing called an EQ to level out the bass and full out the mix.

Love the reviews, I've been a sub for a few months now. My question is what microphone would you recommend for someone who has a decent amount of background noise? (Air conditioner, heater/radiator, smoke detected in hallway of apartment beeping every seconds, PC very close to the mic so loud fans, etc) I currently have a Samson Meteor Mic but it picks up way to much background noise. (Picks up everything I listed above) I really care about the audio being clean. Thanks
Look into a dynamic mic like the SM58 or for a cheaper option Pyle PDMIC58 or Berhinger XM8500. Or for super high quality look into Rode Procaster.

These mics are PERFECT for podcasting, will do wonders for your voice. As for recording music, you will need to boost the highs in your vocals a great deal, considering the warmth will be too much for a full mix

Hi, thank you for this comparison, I think both mics are kinda sibilant and not very smooth. What's your opinion between the 770 v.s. Baby Bottle (winner from your other vid) for vocal? Does the pricier one sound better and smoother?

Thanks for this awesome versus series!!! Now I feel more than comfortable when having the MXL 770, it fits very well with my voice haha Now here are two weird questions, actually only of these that is weird. First question is: Does Rode Rec app works properly when recording mics plugged to the iPhone? Because I'm thinking in buying it and I've read some bad reviews about it. Second question (and it's the weird one): Would the MXL 770 fit in the shockmount that comes with the rode nt1 or nt2? Yep, it's a weird question I'd say mysel haha

I have is I can't find a windscreen that fits this mic so I need some
pop filter... And I try to hang a pop filter to my boom arm (rode psa 1)
and no chance... That's why I've asked if one those shockmounts will
work the MXL.

I'd be very grateful if you give me your opinion into this. I'm planning to do gameplays and voiceovers and I was looking for something cheap similar to the prices of the mxls 770-990. Im most likely certain of what youll suggest me and thats probably the at2020 rather than the mlxs which are more addressed to entry level music producers right? xD But to be honest, I dont like the way Audio Technica sounds for some reason and thats due to the bass and boomie voice that produces... To specify things, Ill most likely chose the 770.Do you any other recommendetations for budget mics?
The comparison thought was on the point and unbiased! On one hand the 770 conqured me because the frequances are evenly and well spread out and the nice warm/natural voice that produce. On the other hand though the 990 had a better clarity and crispiness and Im not talking in any way into cosideration the loundness of the voice but I strongly agree with you that the highs are overwelming. Lol I had to get it out of my chest xD Thanks in advance for reading this by the way... I hope youll finish it and sorry for the rumbling =]
The 770 would probably be one of your better options. But the BM700, NW700, etc. are also decent budget options.
Podcastage The only downside is that I like the apperance of the 990 better, its silver and compact so Im in a bit of a dilemma even though the 770 is superior to the 990.. Btw is it possible to remove the gold ring in the middle of the mic if you unscrew it. The gold accent set me off... so I might just paint the ring since this is the only visible gold part.
I might get both of these, one for home recording and one for travel

I think when you compare mics around the $100 dollar mark you should use the Behringer UM2 or UM22 instead of the Scarlette Solo, because people with that budget most likely would only have those interfaces.
I disagree, running it through something that is not too crappy better showcases the quality of the microphone. I think running it through something midrange in price and quality is reasonable.
Hi, I have a few questions. I've been thinking recently about getting new mic and I decided to buy Samson Meteor with NW-35 Boom arm you have. So my questions are: Did you use any adapter to install Samson Meteor on this boom arm? I was thinking about DAC or soundcard to buy in the future, can soundcard improve a USB mic sound quality? If yes would it improve it vastly or just a little bit? By the way your channel is awesome and you're very helpful with those videos.
5/8" to 3/8" mic stand adapter.
You plug usb mics directly into the usb port, therefore there's no interfaces or docs that will improve them.

Vacation!? What's that!? Haha! I'm not going out to buy all the XX0/XX1 mics, but once I get the 440/441 550/551, etc. I'm going to do a comparison.
I bought a 770 and regret immediately. The detail in the high frequency range is poor. It sounds nice when listening raw, but when it is boosted to get that hi-end airy tone, everything grows harsh and blur. It's not completely junk, and I think it's fair for the price, but Franken SM-1 (140USD, only available in Thailand right now) is far better. There's a comparison against U87 on TH-cam, and I can't hear any significant differences. Bought one and I prefer it over C414.

What would you say is the best dynamic mic around $100, especially in terms of off axis rejection. Originally I bought 4 Samson C01U's (rookie mistake) and the bleed over between them is horrible, so I am looking at replacing them.
Also sorry, I know this isn't the best video to post this on. I've been watching a bunch of your videos trying to find the right mic, and I figured I had a better chance of catching you on one of your newer videos.

awesome vid, as usual! anyways, I came her to ask you a question. i purchased the nw-700, neewer phantom power supply, and the sabrent usb audio thingy. i plugged in the xlr cables and stuff all in correctly, but when i plugged it in to the saberent, it recognized the sabrent, but not the actual mic. not blaming because how could it be ur fault, but do you have any solutions to my problem? thx
Are you plugged into the correct port on the Sabrent? It should be the pink port. If so, have you gone into your audio input settings and checked the gain. If so, then I'm not sure what the issue could be. It's possible that the mic is not plugged all the way in, or it could be some issue with the OS. I'm really not certain what would cause the microphone to be unresponsive.
I plugged it into the pink port and I'm on a Lenovo 710, not a Mac.

990 sounds much better. Marron 5 even used this mic one their songs. its a great mic for the money

The 770 sounds much better. The 990 is harsh in comparison. Not a bad mic, but not as good as the 770. You do get the 991 with it though so it's a choice between flatter raw audio or getting 2 mics.

It is complicated because I do not find a very big difference between the mxl and the at2020, after I search the one that does not pick up the external sound and that is of good quality. But I find that the mxl has more serious than the at2020 no?

I think the 770 might make my voice sound even boxier than it does in my AT2020, where the 990 might bring out the high end more which I always seem to be struggling with with my AT2020. I think the real answer is to use both depending on the sound source.
If you need beatboxing if prefer 770. its more natural freaquency
please do the test with pop filters the hard plosives were really bad mostly for the 990 though.
Any other audio interface alternative to the one recommended in the video? It’s too expensive for me. $100+ is a lot. I just want an audio interface that can bring high-quality sounding but not too much, with a price below 90 dollars. Just the best budget audio interface is what I need for the mx-770

Weird, because over my B&O speakers the 990 sounded fantastic and the 770 sounded terrible.
do you recommend the neewer bm-800 and the Behringer u-phoria umc22 for Skype and Teamspeak? Or a USB Mic for the same price? maybe you know the Superlux 205U, if you don't, Look in Google
I can't get Superlux mics in the states. Therefore I cannot say anything about them. I PERSONALLY prefer xlr mics. It's up to you if you want an xlr mic and an interface, or a usb mic.
