You've raised a very interesting point, and I've also noticed this in my freelance work. Clients who pay more tend to have lower expectations. This phenomenon holds true in my other businesses as well. A customer who buys a $5 digital product tends to be more demanding and dissatisfied than someone who buys a $50 one!

It's really weird right? I would love to know why this is the case. It would be great if some sort of scientific study or experiment could explain why this is the case.

Hey guys 👋🏽, junior web dev freelancer here. I understood the points made in this video but I have a doubt. As you mentioned, when starting out it doesn’t make much sense charging high value as you’re still proving yourself and building a portfolio. My question is WHEN do we start raising our prices? Any rule of thumb guide would help me out. Is it after 5 clients? 10 clients?
How will I know when it’s “the right time” to increase my rates? Cheers

Fantastic question Dylson. If you were the client and the web developer asked for $100 per hour or let's say $5000 to build your website, what would he need to show to convince you he is worth what he is charging? Probably a decent sized portfolio of websites right? Now there is no easy answer on how many websites should be in your portfolio but 10+ is a good number to achieve.
If you are offering your services on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork, you can start raising prices when you have attained a comparable amount of positive reviews to other web developers who are charging more than you do.
Raising your prices will also come naturally as you develop more skills as you will be able to take on more advanced projects and charge more as a result.
Finally and this is the position you want to be in (you will eventually get there but might take some time). You can raise prices when you start getting clients on a consistent basis.

@@TheWebMonkey Alexander, thank you for a detailed response. From your comments I now have a guide of where I gotta aim for. Currently have worked with a few clients, so I still have a long way to go before I reach a consistent client base. But I’ll keep trying my best and keep marketing myself and improve my web building skills.
Thank you for the valuable comment and for your valuable content. All the best from Portugal 🇵🇹💪🏽

I'm watching this because I am new to freelance out of necessity and wanted to learn how to handle the customer info, i.e. their card/bank information for web hosting/data storage

This has always been my way of seeing things, in part because of my own experience. Cheapo clients tend to be the most annoying of them all and clients that pay well don't bother you as much because they trust you're the expert. Unfortunately, I live in a 3rd world country and most people here don't realize how important it is to have a proper website and go with the cheapest freelancer they can find. They just want the ability to say "I have a website", even it's total garbage.

I built websites for clients back when I lived in Nigeria so I definitely understand your experience. I would suggest looking for clients online using platforms like fiverr and others.
