  • Through her personal story as an athlete, Jenna Weiner invites us to reimagine how sports can be more gender inclusive. Drawing on examples from Ultimate Frisbee and Quidditch, she asks us to question our assumptions and rethink how we view sports. In this profound and heartfelt talk, Jenna calls us to be more gender inclusive so that everyone can fully participate in sports.
    Jenna Weiner is a graduate student in Communication Studies - Gender, Race and Identity at the University of Nevada, Reno, having received her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley. Her research focuses on issues of gender and sports, particularly those affecting transgender, non-binary, and genderqueer athletes. Jenna is best known for her online articles detailing her experiences as a transgender ultimate frisbee player. She is also known on campus for her leadership with the More Than Just Project and Trans at Nevada. Jenna is passionate about education and the equitable inclusion of all people, driving her work as a teacher, advocate, and activist. She considers any bit of progress worthwhile, holding to the tenet that over time smaller, personal change adds up to larger, societal change.
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

    While I think your plea of inclusiveness is an important goal, there is no question that generally women cannot successfully compete one on one with men. For example the World Record for Men in the 1500m is 24 seconds faster than the Women's World Record. The only way that can be explained is the different physical characteristics of the two genders. And while removal of gonads and replacing testosterone with estrogen can change body conformation going forward, it does not change the skeletal structure formed during male puberty which yields longer long bones with their accompanying longer muscles. Don't get me wrong here Jenna, I think society is only getting started seriously thinking about inclusion of trans and non-binary athletes, and yours is an important voice in that discussion. Thank you so much for sharing your experience

    This is bs. Larger heart, greater lung capacity, greater bone density and physical strength, longer leaner muscles for reach and stride. Yes, there are some defining differences between men and women in athletic competitions. That is why you hear about all these trans-identified women (men) breaking world records in women's sports but do not hear the same of trans-identified men (women) in men's sports.

      by excluding trans women from women’s sports you are sending us back to the very male environment we escaped from, it’s like we never transitioned. I’d personally quit sports over that.
      On another note; I imagine you take issue w the physical advantage or the locker sharing, consider that by default you will be met w trans men in women’s sports, let me know how u feel about it, I haven’t read any study or a direct comparison but I don’t find trans men to be any less able than trans women, the testosterone level is higher for that matter, they tend to be super ultra fit.

      Alexandra Muñoz I understand your point but you need to also understand that you have an advantage of them. You at a girl now but it essentially always like that, you were born in the wrong body, you made a transition but at the end even tho you got into the other side, you still have your male body. You have an unfair advantage over them because transition aren’t 100% efficient as it’s more of looks than any other thing. You wanted to be some one of them but you still have some of that man body. You transitioned because our bodies are different but that there is the reason why you need to understand that your body will always be diferente to that of a normal woman and that you have an advantage over them. Pls don’t take this as an attack, I don’t hate trans.

    We have a world level cyclist that is also bringing attention to this. The question of testosterone levels as the benchmark of eligibility is interesting and complicated. The solution of sports fundamentally changing is aspirational... though, perhaps starting with some sports (ultimate and quidditch) is a good start. Our culture focuses on winning so much that we will have a hard time allowing perceived advantages in the name of fairness into the sporting arena. But physical advantage IS the hallmark of sports. The tallest, fastest, strongest often bests most practiced and hardest playing. The real question is... why do we have sports... Anyway, Jenna- good job.

    • @ErroneousMonk1
      @ErroneousMonk1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      False. If a boy grows long hair and goes out and wins every women's track meet in Connecticut, he has played the system and cheated in order to win a race against girls. The overarching point of sports and competition is winning (fairly); therefore, we put the focus on winning. Therefore, a perceived advantage is not an actual advantage until the long-haired boy blows away all the girls in the 100m or the chick hopped up on testosterone breaks the skull of her female opponent. Strangely, we don't see very many female-to-male transitioners entering the fray in male MMA or rugby or football. Why is that?

    Not to downplay the toll it takes on someone who lives with a gender identity disorder, much less the struggle of someone who undergoes transition, but no matter what, this will be spun as such by some... BUT...
    If you are born XY, you are not a woman, will never be a woman regardless of hormone therapy or surgery. You may feel like one, and if that makes you happy, I am happy you have found peace in this life, as it is a long, arduous journey. The facts are, you are still XY. If you are XX and are undergoing hormone therapy to transition, you are just a juiced-up XX. In either case, I see this as a huge mistake in women's athletics.
    To disguise your body to accommodate your feelings seems to be a total wash for everything women have worked for to establish their own organizations which they can be competitive. At this point, if this kind of inclusion into "gender-based" sports continues, we may as well just go co-ed.... again, what would the point be?
