    Australia's road signs really made me feel like I was back in the United States... Except you are driving on the other side of the road!! This really makes me want to film roads in another country. I'm hoping I can film some in Canada within the next 5 years!

    • @FreewayBrent

      +Mountain West Highways: Most of them are nearly identical to each other (same fonts and graphics). One slight difference is that Australia has a thin green (or blue) outline, outside of the white line of their big green/blue directional signs, but I decided to pass on replicating that, as it'll just add even more editing time. Otherwise, the signage is all the same.

    Being from New Zealand, I noticed some of the comments mentioning how similar the Australian motorway/freeway signs are.
    I often drive in Australia and noticed the use of an Alphanumeric route system over a shield route system you guys use in the US and here in New Zealand.
    I felt their signs were more "European" when completed to ours which I felt was more similar to the ones in the US. But when it comes to regulatory type signs theirs were more similar to the American ones while ours were more European.
    A heads up on our road markings in NZ, we retained the older US style road markings from the 70s.

    I've seen more road videos of this amazing freeway, but it'll never cease to impress me -the skyline view after the bridge is incredible. Also, I really liked the soundtrack, Chvrches is one of my favorite bands and this song fitted the video really well. Good job!

      +Roads of Europe (verreme) : Sorry it took me awhile to respond; I've been pretty busy for the past month, but I wanted to say thanks for watching! It really is a great ride into Melbourne. I hadn't even heard of Chvrches until mid-December...once I heard this song, it gave me ideas for how I wanted the video to turn out, even before I had the footage in hand in January.

  • @TransCanadaPhil
    @TransCanadaPhil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    nice. Not to many people have American, Australian, and Canadian road videos under their belt! A great accomplishment :-D
    Also that album "Every Open Eye" by Chvrches is going right into my Spotify album collection. I've never heard of them before but I like it :-D

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Trans Canada Phil : I just thought about that, after reading your comment, lol. I guess you're right. I'm probably the only one in the genre? I'll have footage from Baja California, later this year...so maybe I'll have 4 countries worth of freeways on my channel, before the end of 2016. Anyway, yeah the song is bad ass...the songs off their album sounds a bit like something that would have came out in the 1980's...only heard this particular song for the first time, about a week before the trip, and thought it would work well with the length of freeway I wanted to feature. Also helped out tremendously with the type of opening scene I wanted. Thanks for stopping by!

    • @TransCanadaPhil
      @TransCanadaPhil 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +FreewayBrent yes that's exactly the opinion I have of Chvurches after listening to the album. It has a very 1984ish "new wave" style sound.

    Hey Brent...am addicted to your videos, as a total driving addict...well done on your Aussie ones. You will need to do the entire West Gate/Tullamarine and Monash Freeway vids in the next couple of years...just watching again and they have just basically ripped the whole lot up again to widen them all to 6 or 7 lanes each way with new interchanges and flyovers - total eye candy for you!
    Also...some other suggestions...the Southern Freeway in NSW from south of Sydney into Wollongong - this freeway goes down a 2500 ft mountain at 110 km an hour - 6 lanes - massive views and very cool
    And..the South Eastern Freeway over the top and down the city side of the Adelaide Hills in SA - great 6 lane freeway into Adelaide over and again down a 2500ft mountain.
    And..if you ever in NZ you have to do SH1 from Porirua City into Wellington the capital of NZ - it drops straight over the side of an ancient volcano crater, you see the whole of Wellington Harbour as you decend and then you go through a series of flyovers and tunnels straight under the city - its one of my favourite roads ever travelled - check it out!

    From 40-odd miles back down the road from where you started (Geelong) this is fantastic work, and it's good to see you do your thing down here. That view from the top of the West Gate - looking over Port Melbourne towards Station Pier (normally with the Spirit of Tasmania moored up - looks like you got a cruise liner in the video) - never gets old.

    This is awesome!! So stoked that you got to film some Aussie roads! I live in Canberra, ACT (the capital) and just came back from a Victoria road trip... I have to say that despite having a wonderful freeway network, driving in Vic is painful compared to NSW and QLD, for two reasons:
    1) Speed limits are painfully slow - I couldn't believe this road was only 80km/h (50mph)! There are also hardly any speed limits above 100km/h (62mph) even when it would obviously be safe. Sydney's speed limits are generally higher.
    2) Victoria is crazy littered with hidden speed cameras that will ping you for 2km/h over the speed limit, so you can't speed even a little bit. I think you passed 3 or 4 on this segment alone! Fun fact: Melbourne has the highest concentration of speed cameras per square kilometre of anywhere in the entire WORLD. Other states are, on the whole, far more generous with tolerance and signposting of cameras. Sydney's Motorway network, with the exception of the tunnels and the M4, has no speed (greed) cameras at all. The Hume freeway in Vic has average speed cameras for over a hundred kilometres that measure your average speed and fine you if it exceeds 110km/h, it's ludicrous! It's funny seeing everyone speed up to around 120km/h as soon as they hit NSW! 😁😁
    In my opinion, these are the best freeways to drive on/film in Australia:
    VIC: Western Ring Road, Citylink, and Western Freeway to Ballarat.
    NSW (the best!): All the Sydney motorways (M5, M1, M2, M4, Warringah, maybe not M7), the Hume Motorway from Campbelltown, the M1 to Wollongong, the M1 to the central Coast (my favourite road in the entire country!), and the brand new Hunter expressway. And the road through the blue mountains even though it's not a freeway. So basically every freeway in the state is great!
    ACT: GDE - Tuggeranong Parkway, Parkes Way, Majura Parkway.
    QLD: M1 between Gold Coast and Brisbane is a must do, as is the M3 towards Brisbane, and the Gateway Bridge (definitely better than Westgate in Melb)
    SA and WA also have some good ones 👍👍
    I'm praying Victoria doesn't send you a 2km/h over speeding find in the mail, those bastards!
    Anyway essay over, hope you enjoyed Straya and can't wait to see what else you filmed! *Prays M1 to NSW Central Coast is included*

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +SleekDan97 : Hey there! Thanks for the thoughtful response. It's nice to read comments like these; it matches the enthusiasm I have for making these videos.
      I will say this; the speed cameras do seem to keep people in check, with regards to aggressive driving, knowing that they're one "false" move from getting an automatic photo ticket. However, you are right. The 80 km/h limit on the West Gate Freeway was totally not necessary. I could see perhaps the justification for it on the West Gate Bridge, since the lanes were narrowed to accommodate the widening to 10 lanes, coupled with the fact that it's heavily banked to help heavy rainwater drain off the roadway quickly. However, the rest of the freeway could easily accommodate a 110 km/h with no issues. It does seem like the primary reason for those speed cameras is to raise revenue?
      I usually don't like to do "spoiler alerts", but I'll just disclose now (lol) that in Victoria, I also filmed the Monash, Tullamarine/CityLink and the eastern half of the M80 Ring Road. In Sydney, I recorded all the freeway approaches to the Sydney CBD (the Harbour Bridge included), and about half the M2, down to where it seamlessly links up to the Warringah. Also got the best parts of the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway, the Sea Cliff Bridge, and the M1 down to Wollongong.
      I'll be back in a few months..my Sydney g/f and I are going to drive up to Brisbane, so I'll be grabbing more footage up that way.
      Glad you enjoyed watching this video!

    • @SleekDan97
      @SleekDan97 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for replying! Melbourne's low speed limits on freeways really do raise eyebrows about whether it's actually in the name of "safety", or just revenue raising... The Victorian Government raises nearly twice as much revenue from speed cameras as NSW, yet VIC has a lower population and occupies a considerably smaller area!.From memory, the figure was an astonishing $360 million dollars raised in 2014 or thereabouts!
      And that's awesome to hear that you filmed so many roads while down here (and got most of the good ones too), I can't wait to watch them all!
      On a side note, prepare to be stuck in roadworks on the drive up to Brisbane from about Port Maquarie up. It's slowly being upgraded to a divided highway the entire way (should have been done 10 years ago lol) and should be done by 2020 :)

Definitely a must-see, if you're into modern architecture!

    Great Job Brent and your right hand drive vehicle in Australia if used on the SF or LA highway network would have you get out of the car curbside towards a caltrans call box much safer than a left hand car which you had to open towards incoming traffic from the driver side and regarding the video the song is normally played on a EDM radio station like 102.7 KIIS-FM HD radio feed evolution. Nice work and you should have done a collaboration with the FreewayJim group Melbourne based members like Geoff and Bruce both their videos show Melbourne's urban motorway network having speed cameras with speeds from 60 kmh (40 mph) to 110 kmh (70 mph)

      I don't think I'll be heading back to Montreal for a long time, but since I utilize Air New Zealand to visit my Sydney-based g/f (utilizing the layover in Auckland), I'll probably do a 48-72 hour layover sometime to check out Auckland...and record some good stuff, too!

    What a pleasant surprise. I am looking forward to the rest of the Australia series. How difficult was it to get used to driving on the left side?

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Edward Kollin : Thanks! Not difficult at all...I actually picked up my rental car in North Sydney after visiting all the inner-city districts and suburbs over a 5 day span...then made a 800+ kilometer beeline, straight for Melbourne. I think the fact that all the signage, fonts and lane markings are almost identical to those found in the US, helped for me to make a quick transition to driving in Australia.
      There's another 14 or so videos from Victoria and New South Wales to showcase, and there will probably be another 4-6 on top of that, once I return in a few months to head up to Brisbane.

      +Freeway Tim : It was really easy to adapt, to be completely honest. It seems more confusing than it really is, once you actually get behind the wheel. Also helps that all the signs and lane markings are almost identical to US and Canadian standards.
      Thanks for watching!

    Hey I like the hybrid signage based on the UK Motorway & US Freeway systems. Very interesting. Although I wonder if Americans wouldn't get a clue that green means interstate, blue means US, state, and local roads freeway or not and (only stateside now) purple means tolltags-only tollways.

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, there's definitely *a lot* of American influence on both the signage and lane markings in Australia. The signage is probably 90% American influenced, and 10% UK. Had such a blast driving around Australia. Check out my "Driving Into Sydney" video if you'd like...that's also a great drive into a major Aussie city.

    • @PfctvsPontivsPilatvs
      @PfctvsPontivsPilatvs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      FreewayBrent It's the 10% British influence that makes the difference. I noticed that at multilane turnoffs they don't have "EXIT ONLY" like in the US. Instead they have arrows indicating which way each lane will go and above them, separated by a stripe, are all the destination signs. Sometimes two signs meet right above an arrow --- indicating that lane will split. Very easy to understand! Plus all the arrows point UP, not down. A pet peeve of mine is when they use down arrows at a 45 degree angle at the edge of a sign here in the US indicating that the next lane too takes you to the sign's destination. Especially prevalent in Florida! Grrrrr......

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      PfctvsPontivsPilatvs : Yeah, very good observations. Here's the Sydney video I was talking about. th-cam.com/video/3uShcm7xjq8/w-d-xo.html
      Another thing I really like about Australian signage, is that the exits to streets are boxed with a white backround, while traditional US Highway Gothic font is reserved for listing districts and/or cities, which helps to differentiate between street vs. city names for exit signs.

    • @PfctvsPontivsPilatvs
      @PfctvsPontivsPilatvs 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I've seen that vid... I'll take a look at it again.
      And I know what you're saying about the boxed-in exit #'s and street names. Here in the US you get for example "123" in its route marker box then "Webster Street/Hanover/Scituate" all in the same bloody Highway Gothic typeface, and the same font size to boot! Worst outside of New England where they just list the street names on the signs and not the towns or neighborhoods.

    • @scana1979
      @scana1979 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Australian freeway signage is green (originally we used the same green as the US before adopting the different shade we used now). The Citylink tollway in Melbourne adopted the blue signage you see here which is now the standard toll road signage in Melbourne

    First time i ever saw skyscrapers as a kid was this exact drive from Ballarat to Melbourne. West Gate bridge must be one of the best city entrances I've ever seen, and i've been around a lot. Any drives in america you'd recommend that are on that scale of skyscraper freeway epicness?

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there. Thanks for dropping by and commenting! Yes, the West Gate Freeway approach to the Melbourne CBD is pretty epic, especially after the bridge and freeway widening projects. As for America, some of the ones off the top of my head are I-5 into Seattle (northbound or southbound), northbound US 101 approaching San Francisco, primarily because you can't see the skyline until you make the last curve into the downtown area and then BAM, the skyline presents itself in a very dramatic way...I-376 into Pittsburgh is another great drive; nothing approaching the city would indicate you are in one of the top 20 most populated metropolitan areas, and then you drive into a tunnel and are presented at the very end of one of America's great skylines, a mere half kilometre in front.

    • @kushantaiidan
      @kushantaiidan 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      FreewayBrent Watched your vid of your drive into San Francisco, and it was epic coming around that curve. Also, the drier landscape and the amount of eucalyptus trees planted around there, would feel quite at home, Love your work!

    • @FreewayBrent
      @FreewayBrent  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! yeah, there's *a lot* of eucalyptus trees planted all over Northern California. There's a 2 mile stretch of California State Route 84 (about 40 kilometres south of San Francisco) that take you through a eucalyptus forest.
      By the way, I just released my first video from Brisbane last week, showcasing the Pacific Motorway into Brisbane's CBD. Come check it out if you have some free time! th-cam.com/video/9rhnH2Dtkj4/w-d-xo.html

      The Brisbane drive is amazing. Linked it to my very best friend of who lives in Brisbane, I go there about once a year, 2nd fave Aussie city after Melbourne. Love it The skyline and freeway system in Brisbane has grown massively in the last ten years, especially the 12 lane Gateway bridge which I think has to be one of the widest sections of Freeway in Australia, bypassing Brisbane and crossing over the Brisbane River downstream from the CBD near the port.
      AND OMG I love gum trees, or Eucalyptus trees, nothing like them, nothing smells like Eucalyptus forest. But because of Eucalyptus Oil in the leaves our Wildfires and Bushfires are explosive and devastating, we Australians always feel for the Americans during their wildfire season, and our Bushfire season is coming up soon in a couple months. Freeways, Gum Trees, Bushfires and Skyscrapers, something California and Australia definitely have in common.

    Melbourne got world's most liveable city again! 6th time. Dunno how, like Melbourne is awesome. but that good? Should have seen the city in the 80's, industrial pollution, citywide decay like America's rust belt. See the movie Romper Stomper, that sums up 80's melbourne. The city's success is trickling down to Victoria's regional cities, Geelong, Bendigo and my home Ballarat. I don't know where our state gets it's excellent economy from though. Hope it's not a real estate bubble. (It's a bubble) BRB gonna pay off more od my home loan. ^^

      +Schwenda Productions : It's a pretty awesome network, indeed. And, they're going to be expanding it, little by little, to fill in the missing connections and turn Melbourne into a top 10 global freeway system. I believe there's a fairly lengthy section of existing Melbourne freeway that will be widened to a 4 sectional/16-18 lane freeway in the next several years. Very nice stuff, indeed!
