  • In todays video, we tackled mounting the flywheel and clutch combo to the 07k, then threw on the 02j. Things were going smoothly until they weren’t. But alas… the engine trans package is In the car… for now.

Great to see the dedication you have, even though you don’t have a great arsenal of tools. Keep up the good work :)

Have you considered installing a diesel geek short shifter kit? Also, have you sourced a shifter box…a polo shift box fits nicely without cutting and connects up nicely to all the shift cables etc for an 02J transmission. But a mk4 golf/jetta/etc 02J shift box works, just may need some clearance/cutting and removal of bolts. And if you are looking at diesel geek, consider getting their shifter bushing kit to refresh your shifter box. Considering your garage set-up you may wish to get this sorted the next time you pull the engine. Also, your 02J transmission has a mount on it that you don’t need..you might want to remove it to gain more clearance for other items, like an airbox. Enjoy the build, parts hunting can be tough on the old Mk2. You will enjoy the 07k sound, and with the right transmission they feel like they just want to keep pushing through the gears. I get a laugh out of my 92 Mk2 GTI 07K each time I take it for a drive.

I’ll probably go mk4 golf shift box, I haven’t sourced one yet though. I’ll probably refresh it eventually but right now I’m just worried about getting it moving and driving 😂 that’s awesome that you have a mk2 07k, not a whole bunch have been put on camera or at least that I’ve seen

@@brett.mk2 There aren’t many 07K Mk2 swaps posted, you are correct. There isn’t much information on the swap documented either. Partly as the VR6 swap is very popular as is the 1.8T swap. But this engine is very fun. Enough horsepower for the car with potential to add more. The sound is great, the power is plenty.
I had my car stored for 10 years (I have owned it since 1994), and was about to just rebuild the 8V GTI motor…this seemed more interesting with more reliability and parts availability. Gives the Mk2 a bit of a longer life and is somewhat cheaper to service and repair.
If you are looking for info, just ask. I have had to do a tonne of learning and research as I have pretty much rebuilt the car and added some extra VAG components to build in more safety and reliability. Very surprised what can be installed on these cars and what components you can take from other models. For instance I upgraded the rear drums to disc using Audi TT mk2 calipers, VW Up! Rotors, VW Polo axle stubs and Lupo caliper carriers…this is not a must, but the front brake upgrades I had done with 6 piston calipers and 307mm rotors required a balanced rear brake setup to have the right brake balance…but as you can see many parts from other VAG cars really can be used on a build. Tip…just don’t overdo the build…I speak from experience. Do what gets it going, and then figure out what you want to improve.

@@jonathanmackin4130thank you! And yeah, vag cars are kinda like big legos. Definitely need to upgrade brakes, I plan to track the car here and there. There’s a lot I need to do but right now I’m just dying to get it to start!

ive been watching and commenting on tiktok but a full video is way better, nice job!! Yeah taking the whole transmission is really tough. On my mk2 with the 020 my friend and I had to rotate the thing up to get the axle up to clear the flywheel. Putting the whole drivetrain in bolted together is a good idea. I'm so excited to see the car run! the 07k is a dream to put in my mk2

Thanks man! Yeah some people prefer the short content some prefer the long, I enjoy making both so I don’t mind. Yeah, it was definitely a pain to pull the motor especially without a cherry picker but oh well haha, it’s in and hopefully doesn’t have to come back out. But thanks for the support man, hopefully we get her ripping soon!
