I have a 1977 Toyota 1200 pickup or otherwise know as a Toyota publica. And when I put the engine back in it went about the same as when you put the engine in the e30 for mockup.

Needs boost and 26 inch diameter drag radials with a 2.0 na o2j trans with a diesel fith gear. if your going to keep up with cars nowadays.

That engine/trans will go in and out at least 10 more times before it makes power. Do yourself a favor and cut that front end! I did in my Datsun, did it in all my 5 Honda z600, and also on my Audi 4000. It makes it so much easier to pull the engine out.

LS is the obvious was to go, provided it's a aluuuuuuuminum block version. There was a guy over here running an iron block in a E30 M3 in super saloons. It was competitive for 10 laps but the final two, the front tyres were suffering as much as the rears, just because of the geometry used to make the front change direction with all that mass.
