GUYANA | Thriving at a Cost? (The Environmental Leader's Oil Boom)

  • If you look at different countries’ economic trajectory since 2020, you’ll notice widespread struggle, a couple of total nosedives like Argentina, a handful of countries doing alright like Fiji, and one country doing really, really, really alright.
    That would be Guyana.
The country is growing like no other and all kinds of infrastructure is rapidly going up in Georgetown and other parts of the country.
For the longest time, the country was largely an obscure and underrated eco-paradise. But now it feels like it’s cards are stacked against each other.
The economic boom is largely driven by the discovery of oil just off the coast. Will Guyana’s environmental legacy take a hit? What do people there think of the competing interests?
    I went to find out.

Why people are encouraged to, and continue building in Georgetown is mystifying. This city is below sea level and sits on a mud plain; it is flooded every time there's heavy rainfall which is compounded by plugged drainage due to lack of maintenance by the city council. It is an unsightly place where vendors are encouraged to erect tents and dilapidated structures on sidewalks and on parking spaces in front of businesses. This area then becomes a dumping spot for their garbage, some can be seen urinating in the open at times, it is unhygenic, disgusting and illegal, but the police turn a blind eye to all of this. Georgetown is the only city in all of the Caribbean community where this is allowed.

Are you done? Sure you didn't leave anything out. Meanwhile hope you're on your way out. That would be a blessing to Guyana.

Every Guyanese has an opinion as usual. If you are a Guyanese you might know what I mean. Every single Guyanese is an expert in everything and anything, even, the ones that cannot read nor write. And they are quite a few people in Guyana and from Guyana that can neither read nor write. But they are still experts in everything and anything, at least according to them. They are not any easy people. Yes, I was born in the Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana.
