Yeah GTA started as 2D while Driver got the 3D open world first I think the only reason is because of the gun gameplay and people thinking Driver copy GTA even tho it's GTA that copy it and Driver got bullied out the game market this is what happens when popularity gets out of hand.

GTA never lost there identity it was a thug game they just addet the third person view. Sometimes its better to be different.

Driver 1 through parallel lines were my childhood. My brother and I played the crap out of driver 3. We used the guide book to find all the secrets. So many good memories
The Parallel Lines was OMG, what a game from my childhood, the car sounds, physique and damage was better than GTA SA in my opinion (dont get me wrong, im a GTA fans also), and dont forget you can upgrade your cars at garage, its like midnightclub + GTA combined to a single game in several aspects
There's 1 more game, in a way. Watch Dogs was originally going to be the next Driver game, wound up being it's own series. As much as I love Aiden Pierce, I can't help but wonder what the game would be like playing as Tanner instead.
