Expectations were very low for this one. Must have been a combination of seeing all those jars of pickled herring floating in the supermarket isles for years and the smell of herring rotting in the sun.
One of my most fond childhood memories. Watching your video makes me want to somehow find some, but that's problematic since I live in middle TN now. Enjoy your vids.
Older video but I just have to say, I love the catch and cooks with Mario. His respect for the fish and the process is awesome plus he extracts the full potential of the fish and it’s freshness. Great videos man.
Wooow. High compliments from the pro Chef! Great work. Thank you for your honest opinion of herring. I've been hesitant to catch herring, but you've sold me it's do-able.
Great job buddy...I have watched several of these fishing shows on TH-cam and enjoy this one most...the catch directions on cooking ...the taste test from various people really awesome...nice job
You wanna try herring at its best, Elias?? Smoke them! No, not like that. The cigarette papers keeps tearing ;) Smoke them in a proper smoker with real wood chips. Depending how you do them, you will have either Kippers or Bloaters. TH-cam have plenty of videos on it. Anyway, once smoked they last really well and taste amazing, even cold. Kipper meat, cream cheese, a little dill and puff pastry, mmmmm! Edit: I dont understand why fried food wouldn't be good for a person. Sure, you swim the food in loads of fat and it will be bad. even more so if you're eating that way a couple or more times per week. But I fry my meat with barely any oil (try coconut oil with fish!), just enough to lube the pan.
Yo man, next year. I was checking all those methods out after I did this sort of try out. The whole cultural staple of these fish makes total sense to me more than ever.
@@EliasVFishing Smoked kippers are a staple for English breakfast, and a superb way to start the day with high-grade protein and no fat. Really gets you off to a great start, delicious. I had them while in England a few decades back, and have wanted to get back to that here.
It just cracks me up each time you eat something that I've eaten all my life and look surprised that it tastes good. I'm trying to imagine all the things you haven't eaten..
Eating sardines, herring, mackerel all my life, pickled; in tomato sauce; in mustard; smoked; in water; in vinegar; probably every possible way other than raw. And I'm from a landlocked country with no access to ocean. Astonishingly there are people, who taste these things, whether they are eatable, while entire nations and countries would be laughing or shaking their head in disbelief, since its their main source of food.
I loved pickled herring. Made my first in 1970 along with pickled sunfish. Commercial pickled herring is way salty. remembering fishing tidewater and tidal Croton River in April. We use to snag them with treble hooks. In the early 70's I used my fly rod and a white winged buck tail. I recall we cooked them on the camp fire of oven until they flaked. Have to tried cutting and frying up suckers the way Isaack Walton recommends . Delish in early spring or October.
Aloha Elias, I think this is one of my favorite catch n cook episodes from you. I like seeing underutilized fish being put to good use. We don't have live herring here in Hawai'i so the only place I can get herring is either frozen whole at a local market or pickled from Costco. I LOVE the pickled herring from Costco. I have actually grilled the thawed frozen herring eaten with just a little shoyu. I don't mind the bones. Local sushi shops serve a pickled herring called iwashi (ee-wah-she) which is one of my favorites. I would like to see you try your pickling recipe on mackerel. I LOVE pickled mackerel too. Keep up the great work!
That was a great video. Sitting hear laughing and wishing I was there. Awesome! So glad I found your channel. Elias makes pickled herring and great soft baits. Amazing.
Pickled Herring is absolutely amazing! I eat it on bread with a dab of mayo on top. (Sild = Herring) Here in Norway we (I, some people) have a "sildebord" herring-serving, consisting av various types of pickled Herring. The one you made, with different types of spices, some with tomato sauce, it even comes with sour cream sauce! Freaking delicious! You can try googling: Julesild, tomatsild, rømmesild, kryddersild and hit it with some google-translate ;) The one you made would be called "sursild". An other option for this fine fish is to cure them, with salt, matybe som esugar and smoke them (cold smoke), fatty, smokey, boney and absolutely awesome ;)
Great video! Jealous like to catch some fresh herring and fry it in oatmeal, rolled oats! Scottish way to cook it. Butter fly from bottom up and rinse press into rolled oats. Fry so sweet and nutty. Love roll mops too! Great to see!
As a kid my family used to net smelt (another bait fish) in Lake Erie, in the early spring. Those fried herring looked like large smelts, which always fried up crisp and tasty. They looked delicious. Hope you didn't get botulism poisoning with the pickled fish. We'll find out shortly, I guess....
Cool video. Caught herring once at the sludge boat dock at the entrance to Sheepshead Bay. They were alot bigger than the ones you caught. I guess it would be best to use smaller ones. I like the pickled herring in cream sauce. The appetizing stores used to sell it in the Flatlands area of Brooklyn I grew up in.
thanks for this video. I've always been worried and skeptical about the pickled herring. Now I'm going to try some and maybe try to find some to fry! thank you again!
Next time you're in the supermarket, look for smoked kipper snacks. They come in a tin, and should be located wherever they sell the other canned meats. Super good. Just be sure to open the tin over the sink so that the oil doesn't get everywhere. Thanks for another great vid!
In the tidewater area of va the big thing with herring is called salt herring. They pack them in salt for a time then take them out, soak them to remove some salt then fry them for breakfast.
Happy New Year ~ AJ from Ohio reporting that herring still taste good. My grand Father was born in Sweden so i'm pretty sure he ate some kinda fishes. When i go fishing with my best friend in Alaska, he buys herring for bait. After all day on deck it gets stinky, but rite after you buy it i'd fry some up, but i guess i'm good with just donuts :) AJ
@EliasVFishing Awesome video! I honestly cannot remember the last time I had Herring. The fried Herring looked outstanding! LOL, and Mario's reaction to your pickled Herring was too funny. I have to try both ways! If I don't get another chance, may you Elias and all your subs have a Blesses New Year!
Great video! I want to try catching them tomorrow for my first time--where in Long Island did you catch those? All other videos I've watched people catch them off fishing piers..never saw them caught casting from a shoreline
herring you fry like this= 2 butterfly fillets together, skins outside and inbetween either fresh chopped dill or strong mustard. not as much oil as you used and fry well. serve with boiled potato and a cold light beer. when i fry them i gotta beat people back from the pan so they would not eat directly from the pan. you can also salt them, especially the females w eggs in them are delicious.
Like some people meantioned, sourcream is amazing with this, and top it with some dill or parsley. Also the onion is a big part of the flavour profile. And btw, bon appetit is french so we use the same term, atleast here in Norway.
Looks great!! Try that pickled herring with some sour cream, and pumpernickel bread. "Es gezunterheyt" (Yiddish), or maybe "Mahlzeit" (German). Thanks. Ed
Great video. Always enjoy watching your video. Elias. I'm New to Herring fishing in NYC. Just a little confuse. Is catching herring actually illegal in NYC? Because I was checking the limit per day/person. Then found out there is NO possession for Herring. However, I see many catching buckets load of them. Is that means we can get summon for catching them??? Any comment is appreciated. Thanks.
You're a real Ashkenasi now... I grew up eating those for breakfast among other types of cold fish. I never ate a whole chunk at once tho Lol you're wild.
man those sabiki rigs almost feel like cheating though, when you're out on the ocean 20 miles from shore and you run out of bait, nothing beats just dipping a rig into the water and watching baitfish just gravitate towards the thing :^)
I was in the same boat as you regarding pickled herring. I would suggest next time you also add soy sauce and 1 whole sliced jalapeno pepper into your brine. That will take it to the next level
I like watching your channel. The last and first time I caught a fish was when I was like 10. The epic battle took like 30 minutes and it was a 5 cm gudgeon :D. I recommend cutting pickled herring and marinading it in soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, some spicy mustard and sugar for a few days ;) Edit: Oh, yours is already cut so just marinade after pickling ;).
When I pickle herring I don't filet them instead I just lay them down ( after you scale & clean them up ) and cut them in chunks ( with bones ) and they turn out just fine. Larry
Trust me I would love to be able to catch some Herring and go striper fishing. Don't get me wrong the herring have come back pretty decent this year but not like it used to be matter fact my friend and I just picked up the Fisherman's Digest and it's still closed and the game warden we talk to said it's going to be close for the foreseeable future because they don't have someone assigned to specifically study the herring
Hello from Sweden the land of the Herring. Well, kinda. Its very common here anyway. Having it pickled around easter, midsummer and christmas is a tradition, served with just boiled potatos, chives and some sour cream. There is a number of ways to pickle it. Onion pickling being among the most common, similar to what you did. Tho mustard pickled herring and another variant where its pickled with tomato is also common. In the summer you can find it smoked and fried as well. Personally im not a huge fan of pickled herring. Prefer the other methods. I wonder if there is a recipe for a swedish "Sillamacka" its a pretty simple sandwich anyway. Google it and you can probably figure out a way to do it just from the pictures.
I open them up hold them at the head and run my finger and thumb down either side of the backbone, that's them basically boned, flour em up, fry em up, delish.
Expectations were very low for this one. Must have been a combination of seeing all those jars of pickled herring floating in the supermarket isles for years and the smell of herring rotting in the sun.
EliasVFishing baked potatoes with herring... delish!
reminds me of the smelt we used to catch from Lake Michigan. Those you can cook whole and eat all of them like french fries.
My lakes don't have smelt in them anymore around here. I remember my dad telling me about the smelt runs.
One of my most fond childhood memories. Watching your video makes me want to somehow find some, but that's problematic since I live in middle TN now. Enjoy your vids.

great stuff - jamaica bay is flooded with these and they come out as the sun rises and sets! love these fish and they're so fun to catch!
You wanna try herring at its best, Elias?? Smoke them! No, not like that. The cigarette papers keeps tearing ;) Smoke them in a proper smoker with real wood chips. Smoked Herring is awesome !!! Pickled Herring is darn good too.
Awesome that you got in 2-ways of prepping them, and they looked fantastic. I was worried you would yak it up! Lol, Great meeting up again! 👍
Nice. Reminds me off our smelt fishing and cooking here in the Great Lakes. We fry up smelt whole just like that. Dam good.

Another winner. Well done.
Pickled Herring is truly amazing. Especially when you have it with potato salad.

First time elias surfcasting fishing nice thanks for the recipy

This makes me want to try to get some. Winter fish fry sounds like a great idea.
No will to live lmao

These fish are a staple right across europe , tasty dude. Also they are a very good pike bait, either whole or a tail section.
Yeah, somehow I’ve never made the effort to try this. Maybe the work, maybe the stigma. Not sure but I’ll certainly do it again!
Looks like tons of fun.
Great video! I want to try catching them tomorrow for my first time--where in Long Island did you catch those? All other videos I've watched people catch them off fishing piers..never saw them caught casting from a shoreline
Had your pick of fun where I had the skunk of bass and short fluke all season I see. Didn't get it for the dusky's out front though. Nice vid

Smoked as Kippers with scrambled egg for breakfast is perfect. Don't know if you get them smoked in the US but Kippers / Arbroath smokies are awesome.
Elias you are the man. I'm definitely going to try this dish...thumbs up.
Like some people meantioned, sourcream is amazing with this, and top it with some dill or parsley. Also the onion is a big part of the flavour profile. And btw, bon appetit is french so we use the same term, atleast here in Norway.
Maybe one day it will be legal again to harvest them down here in NC. I'm eager to try this. It was once a big thing here.
Looks great!! Try that pickled herring with some sour cream, and pumpernickel bread. "Es gezunterheyt" (Yiddish), or maybe "Mahlzeit" (German). Thanks. Ed
Yeah. My father used to love it.
Pickled Herring/Northern is friggin delicious when done correctly.
I love pickled herring. Grew up eating it. Wish we had henrion around here on the Coast of California.
Jake Rieger We got sardines, they taste a lot better than herring lol.
Awesome video as always man!
Great video. Always enjoy watching your video. Elias.

Great vid. I also noticed your a tribe member 😊. Next time try a slice of manchego cheese under the herring. Oh, and some scotch 😁.
Great video E, Ill be trying this.
Never thought of that fried recipe. I'm a big fan of fried smelt at Greek delis and restaurants.
Im a little bit jealous watching this. Everything looked delicious!
Lots of adult beverages and herring and you won't notice them bones. Lmao. Great vid on catch and cook.
Hey where on Long Island were you fishing? It looked like the Jones Beach work docks but when I look closer it isnt.
Are herring around this time of year in winter? Never caught one ever!
Sweet I gotta try the pickle herring now I guess .. I did some fried last year and they were good
You're a real Ashkenasi now... I grew up eating those for breakfast among other types of cold fish. I never ate a whole chunk at once tho Lol you're wild.
Atlantic mackerel catch n cook?
man those sabiki rigs almost feel like cheating
though, when you're out on the ocean 20 miles from shore and you run out of bait, nothing beats just dipping a rig into the water and watching baitfish just gravitate towards the thing :^)
Maybe consider a lutefisk catch and cook. It would be unique, but just be careful in the preparation if you decide to do it.
When you caught those herring and landed them, I thought I heard them say "I surrender.".
Now I'm hungry for herring.
18:02 this man gets it. Traditionally pickled herring is on black bread.
Are your baits/ lures at jandh yet? Going there tmr and would like to pick some up
Drinking a maine beer ftw!!! I’m from Maine... but yeah amazing beer here!!!
I was in the same boat as you regarding pickled herring. I would suggest next time you also add soy sauce and 1 whole sliced jalapeno pepper into your brine. That will take it to the next level
So you can catch these all winter long?
HOW far out on long island did you hafta go to get into them or is that just everyone s honeyhole where it's a secret??

Nice one mate,,,,please let me know the hook size and location please. Cheers 👍
I like watching your channel. The last and first time I caught a fish was when I was like 10. The epic battle took like 30 minutes and it was a 5 cm gudgeon :D.

Good tip like that idea
very nice great video :) i love pickled hearing , i am here in Washington state i will try to catch them .
Damn son, Mario approves!
Yum. I'd probably like it fried. But wouldn't mind eating it pickled once in awhile.
nice vid, In Michigan we do pickled pike all winter. Good work eh!
awesome vid man
Were not allowed to keep them in md they stopped it years ago never ate em but rock and catfish love em
Just mix some sour cream with the drained pickled herring & you have creamed herring. Awesome. Great video.
Thanks
you can make salted herring in denmark we call them spegesild
location please?
This looks like the Great South Bay around Gilgo ?
Looks great. I've eaten the supermarket herring, both the cream and the wine sauce, and find them a bit too sweet. Send me a jar! :)
When I pickle herring I don't filet them instead I just lay them down ( after you scale & clean them up ) and cut them in chunks ( with bones ) and they turn out just fine. Larry
Easy to eat off the spine like that? Good idea

Its a year later, but when pickeling fish/shrimp flip the jar on the lid. When you keep it up right the top wont get pickeled.
Prefect conditions for fishing... Look at that water

Smoked herring is delish.

I open them up hold them at the head and run my finger and thumb down either side of the backbone, that's them basically boned, flour em up, fry em up, delish.
