Max, thank you for revisiting my Mother's childhood city. 3 years ago I took a trip down memory lane with my parents, wife and kids. We were so excited to find my mother's old home in Shamian. The place looked beautifully renovated as is the entire area. Her home was a three story red brick building beside the east bridge 37:10 on your video. My grandfather was in charge of customs and spoke fluent English. He worked for the Kuomintang government and lived in Shamian at a time when only foreigners were allowed to live from 1940 to 1949. My mother was well aware of White privilege back then. Her family left for Hong Kong before the Communist came. Because my grandfather was a good man and a proud Chinese, the communists allowed his family to leave the country with their possessions without any problems. My mother faced more discrimination by the British in Hong Kong and decided to leave for Canada in 1966. I was one years old and my mother always taught me never to forget my roots and to be a proud Chinese even though I was born in Hong Kong. Thank you for doing this video for me from my previous request. I have already sent the link to all my relatives to see it. My mother is really going to be happy. You are the best Max.
Oh my god....You just shared me a legendary family story, my dear friend! I feel astonished and surprised and excited and grateful during reading your amazing sharing. Your family is part of old history of China.. Thank you for every word you shared to me, and hope you and your family be healthy and happy forever! Thank you!
I have heard a similar story from the Chinese seniors I work with. They all have a deep connection with China. And when 2019 riot/protest whatever you call it happened, they couldn't understand it.
@@WalkEast Yes, it was a beautiful building but not always. We first saw it in 1985 on a separate trip with my Mother and she was shocked that it was dirty and run down. Just like the rest of China, the place has been transformed back to the original splendor and probably even nicer. Her family lived on the top floor (3rd floor) on the left side of the building. You captured it beautifully on your video.
@@AmelieZh My parents' friends and relatives from Hong Kong are largely anti-China because they are stuck in the cultural revolution. Living in North America, we see clearly the rise of China and the stupidity of the Hong Kong people. I have gotten into a lot of fights with other Hong Kong people because of my pro-China position. I won't allow anyone to slander China in Canada without offering my opinion. I really have to be careful with the Anti-Asian situation in our country.
The more and more I watch your videos I am really seeing how far ahead China is than the US. At this point I think the US is so far behind there is no competition. China is amazing.

Are some of these buildings used as embassy’s still then ? The fixed camera position shots are great, I love the way your gear captures colour too, it looks very life like or how the human eye sees things anyway. Fantastic stuff, have you been to Fushan or Dongguan too ? Dongguan is home to the Huawei 🤔 campus 🤔 estate 🤔 village 😂 it’s large Huawei big gaff. Have a great weekend and thank you for the views 🙌🙌

the first chinese city i visited. that was 1982. the White Swan Hotel was already there. the Youth Hostel on the Shamian Island was where most backpackers stayed. streets outside the hostels were full of black market money changers
It's a pity that you didn't walk to the white swan hotel. I remember there's a tasty seafood restaurant across the hotel, but not sure if it's still there.
Some of the "plazas" and pathways these crowds are milling about in used to be beautiful green spaces and flowers. Shamian is still pretty but not quite as nice as before because the central strip used to actually be a long strip of green grass and flowers lined by old trees and buildings. Just gorgeous. They turned a lot of it into concrete because there were too many visitors and the walkways beside the garden strip going down the centre of the island were getting crowded. There is still a fair amount of garden left but it was a bit heartbreaking when they were replacing gardens with concrete and pavings. I still have some photos of how it looked before. Unfortunately, over tourism has its cost.

Btw, who was that celebrity?
Wowww. 😃😃. Cool. 👏🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for your great tips about this place.
You're an expert of Shamian, thank you!

I was here first. But I had to watch the video and post a long comment so that is the reason why you beat me. LOL
0:54 Why the framerate drop to 1 frame/sec?
I guess that's the problem of cellphone or other devices.
@@WalkEastI watch this from a gamer PC and see the same lag with low resolution. I see this all of your videos. Probably your camera drop the frames because can't process the 4k when many thing change on the picture. I like your walking videos and just try to help with this information. No offense at all.
@@WalkEast Forget it. I had an issue. Something wrong with my browser. Sorry. Your videos are amazing. :)

Maybe a famous cloths model.
@@WalkEast Okay...
Why everyone follows her? Who is she
She's not a celebrity. They are actually doing live streaming fashion show and online sales.
Actually, I don't know.... I just follow everyone to film her😂
