Very weird you bring up blackness. All Disney did is cast the role based on talent. The casting calls didn't specify they were looking for a black lead. Little Mermaid is one of those fairytales where the character can look like anything because in the original book her skin color is green. These Disney live actions are reimagined remakes after all.
BUT if we're going to make it political and talk about skin color. The original author was an explorer. He got the idea of mermaids from African cosmology. He just took it and repackaged it for a white audience in order to preach about white mans Christianity. The original story it's about the mermaid earning a soul in order to enter heaven. White people high jacked mermaids from black folks tbh. Love that a white man director made it come full circle by casting Halle without even knowing. cause most folks don't even know these facts.
