Leonard said, "there's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in..." Antony is a very broken vessel and it is through those cracks we see his light. I can't imagine how much pain you have to have had to have written this song and then to have so completely understood it to perfectly sing it. If this is the passion God inspires through suffering, it is indeed necessary for the human condition to suffer for such beauty. Rest in God Leonard and God Bless Antony in all his little pieces.
How lucky were to see Mr Leonard Cohen in Australia many years ago. Our little girl was only 4 and had, for some reason fallen in love with Mr Cohens song “Everybody Knows”... took her to the concert ...she had her dad write a letter to Mr. Cohen...I may be your youngest fan. And drew a flower garden for you. He was such a gracious man, bent down and received it from her little hands. Needless to say she was ecstatic and the crowd was on their feet. That was our girl...never a fear. And for Leonard Cohen to have accepted it had me crying for days. I wonder what ever happened to that beautiful letter from a 4 year old. An amazing man.... What a beautiful story. I believe he kept your little girl’s letter forever. What an extraordinary man. You all are so blessed to have seen him and share his magic with your girl.
There is so much power and beauty in his voice, in this song, it brings me to tears. His body just doesn't seem like it can hold such an amazing amount of power... Thank you Antony for sharing your gift, your passion and the beauty of your soul, your song with us...
I once worked in a music store for 6 months. All the days of one of the months, this song was played in the front DVD at full volume. Not once I got bored or didn't feel a tingling sensation down my spine...and his nervous hand twitching movement helps to feel that beautiful tension
This song, with Leonard's beautiful words and Anohni's ethereal voice, is my favorite prayer. It is the only thing that calms me and gives me hope when I am in anguish about all the suffering in the world. I find her voice so healing to my spirit. "Let your mercy spill on all these burning hearts in hell." Wow, Leonard! I sing this song (in my head, you wouldn't want me to sing out loud!) to those who are suffering whenever I hear of another new tragedy, hoping that its healing power goes out like a balm to the world.
i'm reminded of another Cohen song, Lover Lover Lover "And may the spirit of this song / May it rise up pure and free / May it be a shield for you / A shield against the enemy"
His uncapped passion leaves me in awe... Never do you see this type of passion in, even the most seasoned of artists - Anthony is one of the most captivating people to watch, hearing him is another thing - mind blowing (
I’d be a much poorer person had I not heard Leonard’s introduction followed by Antony’s most beautiful, mystical rendition of Leonard’s “If It Be Your Will”. I was simply mesmerized. What a wonderful performance. The 2009 tour was my initial introduction to Leonard, Antony & The sublime Sisters. I was hooked, instantly. My life is enriched, forever.
So...I guess I saw this ten years ago, when I watched the doc, as I've been a fan of Cohen's since forever. I must admit: as soon as I saw him walk out on stage, I judged this man: how he was dressed, his dyed hair, the fact that he was chubby; I thought they must have pulled this guy out of a subway station or something, and that this was all going to go horribly awry; that someone had made a mistake. Then he started to sing. I was so moved by his interpretation of this song, and, upon seeing it, realized how easily I judge people by their appearance. Thank you, Antony. You changed a guy who thought he was always respectful, and always open to another's lifestyle, but is just as prone as the most cold-hearted, cynical bigot to schematize and judge another. Such a great performance, such a great voice, such a great talent, and they come from all over. It takes all kinds; that's what it takes.

@@catarinacouto2501 Antony is male, born a boy. Antony Hegarty. Now known as her "Spirit name" Anonhi. Very beautiful isn't it? 😊 She says her sexuality was never emphatically "I want to be a girl" but much more subtle, and that growing up "he"was too afraid to ask to be known as "she." She has not had gender reassignment surgery or anything, and never will. Anonhi just identifies more as female and is much happier now. I love her dearly and that voice! Sublime 💖. Also stunningly intelligent. If you read the interview she gave with The Guardian in London, you will understand. (I'm sure you already know all of this Catarina, it's just for the benefit of folk who wish to know more about her 😉). It's rather confusing as in this heart rendering performance for Leonard, she is still known as Antony 🤔😀!!! I think Leonard would love this fine rendition of his song, yes? Kudos to you for bringing it up. Peace and Light 🌟 Rest well Leonard. You are sorely missed. Up there in Heaven singing with the most sensational band ever... x
@@catarinacouto2501 No such thing. You cannot change genders. Your spit shows if you are male or female. Every cell in your body know the gender. Even the male skeleton is different from the female.
What makes this version the undisputed definitive one is the prolonged sense of fragility Antony creates that has us teetering at the cliff edge of breakdown while
Oops while without realising it one has been wrapped up in an emotional and spiritual coat of feathers so soaring as to carry one not only safely away from the fall but at high as the heavens. It's sublime.
I first heard this a year ago. I have played it constantly ever since and I cry every time. Anthony/Anohni has the most an amazing voice and seems a beautiful person too. Love her and of course Leonard Cohen.
I see a lot of his body movements are part of the comments. For me this adds to his awkwardness as an artist. It's not a bad thing. He comes off as a very fragile individual, but also a very complicated and beautiful one.
I don't think it's a case of being awkward, I think it's being lost in the music and the feelings. Perhaps at times he catches himself and feels a little self-conscious but of course this is before he became a she and was perhaps feeling awkward in their skin anyhow. What ever it is the result is awesome! I think it only adds to the performance to see how much Anthony was feeling the music. I agree music should not be about how the performer moves to their creations. Music is about the sound, the feels not the sight! All the best performers get lost in their music somehow. Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Etta James. And the Portishead concerts my god her vulnerable and humble nature really, really works! Self inflated performers who only care about their dance look will only give that off on stage Fun to watch a stage performance too though.
I went to see him sing at Shepherds Bush in London many years ago. What a wonderful gentle soul he is. He sings with such passion and honesty - it was a moving and wonderful experience I will never forget.
I was stunned by the emotion and beauty of this performance. And I love the editing in of Leonard Cohen in that iconic deeeeep voice, speaking of beauty. Perfection...
A wonderful rendition of one of Leonard Cohen's most beautiful poems. There was only ever one video/performance that I continued to bump every year or so (Squat Club "M44 Beehive Cluster"). And now there are two !! Out - fucking -standing.
First time ever I heard Antony sing was this exactly and he connected to me at the deepest core. The movements, I know those movements; those movements are the way we feel at times as we navigate these often treacherous waters that we call Life. Deep and Sad at times this Great Grey Ocean; take the wave and master the helm!
This is my soundtrack for the Coronavirus crisis. The beauty, power and vulnerability expressed here give me hope that we will get through this. Watching Antony, now Anohni sing is humbling, I am grateful.

Just watched the doc on Sky Arts. Antony moved me to absolute tears with her incredible cover. Don't believe I've ever seen someone take a song and mould it into something so unique, quite like this. What an incredible voice. Blown away.
I watched this documentary in a theater in Atlanta, GA. There weren't many people in the theater and the film was OK but not exactly thrilling, When this song started which I've always like being performed by a kind of bizarre person I never heard of I was indifferent. Anohni has a once in a life time voice. So glad I get to hear it!
I cried so hard it broke my heart. I love them both, Antony and Leonard and this mix made my unbelievably sad and happy in the same time. Thank you.
. ...every time I hear this I get to be a better human being.
so i try to listen often
..salamat..Ker .
Absolutely fantastic! One of most emotionally involving performances in the history of modern music!
One of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I've always loved this song. One of the commenters referred to it as a prayer. It surely is. And this version, just gorgeous.
I've been visiting this video since 2006 and still in tears my soul is... Antony thank you! Leonard Cohen thank you!
It's pretty good
RIP Leonard Cohen...Much love for your endless poetic inspiration.
The perfect tribute to a great poet and singer. RIP Leonard Cohen.
well said x
Has it been 3 years all ready
Tellement beau.... Quelle interprétation... C'est plus que beau, sublime, merci ANTONY, un immense merci, waouw !!

I LOVE how everyone went crazy at the end. Im sure there were lots of people who didnt even know who she was before that night, now Im sure they are fans
Yes! Indeed.
Leonard and Antony two of my favorite earthlings ...they stir me and make me feel alive
How are things on your planet these days Zandrog? Have you guys fucked it up your home as well?
i will never tire of listening to this
Leggere così tanti commenti di Amore e gratitudine verso questa Anima, meravigliosa,mi riconcilia con l ' umano. Grazie Antony. ❤️❤️
Never heard this song before last week and just can’t get enough of it. What a beautiful and powerful song and amazing vocals. Where has it been and what else is unheard that impacts like this?
Yes I have ,he singing that song ,gives so much peace and helps me deal and accept my life as it is❤
my god that is magnificent , cant stop playing it
This is something very special.
He opens his mouth and beautiful music just pours out of it. Soooo unique, so uncanny. I love listening to his sing this song; it's musical beyond explanation.
(She)
That really depends on how simpleminded and incapable of mental movement you are.
Such an emotional rendition! I can’t believe that dear Leonard Cohen is gone…
This guy and this song is one of my favorite performances of all time. It is exquisite!
Its not a guy its a woman. A trans woman
@@catarinacouto2501 Antony is male, born a boy. Antony Hegarty. Now known as her "Spirit name" Anonhi. Very beautiful isn't it? 😊
She says her sexuality was never emphatically "I want to be a girl" but much more subtle, and that growing up "he"was too afraid to ask to be known as "she."
She has not had gender reassignment surgery or anything, and never will.
Peace and Light 🌟
Rest well Leonard. You are sorely missed. Up there in Heaven singing with the most sensational band ever... x
Sublime.
Yes, it's definitely the fragility working in tandem with the overall intent of the song, the humility. Beautiful.
OMG I am speechless.How beautiful
My utmost inspiration!
In everything!
Always.
I miss you so,so much
Leonard Cohen.
😥😥😥😥❤❤❤❤❤
IKR!! Truly blown AWAY!
Antony even my 86 year old father thinks this is beautiful! Thank you!.
Love this comment.
Looks like a shy guy who just can't stop the music flowing through his entire self. I love Leonard's music, but here I can see it.
I first heard this a year ago. I have played it constantly ever since and I cry every time. Anthony/Anohni has the most an amazing voice and seems a beautiful person too. Love her and of course Leonard Cohen.
Absolutely bloody sublime.
I see a lot of his body movements are part of the comments. For me this adds to his awkwardness as an artist. It's not a bad thing. He comes off as a very fragile individual, but also a very complicated and beautiful one.
Great choice of words,,, very very emotional for me ,,,and I'm not sure why
nicely put
Self inflated performers who only care about their dance look will only give that off on stage
Fun to watch a stage performance too though.
@@jonkibbe6594 i so agree ... he is stunning ...
@@jonkibbe6594 I think her entire stage presence, and ofc her singing is beautiful and captivating.
I went to see him sing at Shepherds Bush in London many years ago. What a wonderful gentle soul he is. He sings with such passion and honesty - it was a moving and wonderful experience I will never forget.
I adore Antony's rendition of this song...thanks so much for sharing!
I have always loved the great LC, but nobody sings this like Anthony.
I've been thinking and listening to Leonard since his demise. This cover and song came to mind. He will be forever in our hearts. RIP Leonard.
I was stunned by the emotion and beauty of this performance. And I love the editing in of Leonard Cohen in that iconic deeeeep voice, speaking of beauty. Perfection...
The best interpretation ever of this song
Every time I hear this, it both fortify and breaks my heart
This moves me every single time I listen to it. Pure magic. ❤
It was spectacular. I noticed how humble he is. The applauses were also for him but he gave them all to the whole band. Beautiful soul!
A wonderful rendition of one of Leonard Cohen's most beautiful poems.
Here If It Be Your Will
Leonard Cohen
If it be your will
That I speak no more
And my voice be still
As it was before
I will speak no more
I shall abide until
I am spoken for
If it be your will
If it be your will
That a voice be true
From this broken hill
I will sing to you
From this broken hill
All your praises they shall ring
If it be your will
To let me sing
From this broken hill
All your praises they shall ring
If it be your will
To let me sing
If it be your will
If there is a choice
Let the rivers fill
Let the hills rejoice
Let your mercy spill
On all these burning hearts in hell
If it be your will
To make us well
And draw us near
And bind us tight
All your children here
In their rags of light
In our rags of light
All dressed to kill
And end this night
If it be your will the poem:
So glad to see it written! :)
There was only ever one video/performance that I continued to bump every year or so (Squat Club "M44 Beehive Cluster"). And now there are two !! Out - fucking -standing.
Leonard Cohen will be my idol forever... Anybody listening in pandemy of 2020?
Still revisiting this. 2021. So beautiful.
He's got the voice of an angel, and this song brings me peace whenever I listen to it.
Peace.
SHE has the voice of an angel.
moogie1954 HE. Antony was male when he performed this masterpiece cover. You wouldn’t call the man that won the Olympic gold Katelynn because he was Bruce. Same thing.
@@sabinacle1529 yes you would. It is respectful to call trans people by their actual gender, even in a past tense. For convinience, you can say "before she came out" and the such. Thank you.
Chloe Pechlaner shut up ChLoE
tears fall when I listen to this and I miss my family
What a beautiful song love u sis xxx
Yes, same.
Amen, William. One of the most prayerful songs Ive ever heard. This reaffirms my faith in humanity. Thankyou Antony. Thankyou Leonard.
God bless Leonard Cohen. Thank you.
This song makes me weep with the glory of the heavens music. Thank you Anthony, & thank you Leonard & band.
Has to be one of the most beautiful things I've seen coming from a live singer performing.
This song makes me cry. Very beautiful. Nobody even L. Cohen whom I love can make it this beautiful.
lt's so true, that God does send us angels...Antony you've gained your wings with such an angelic voice!!
The last 1.5 minutes is just the best vibing ever. So great.
Then as the song and the singer continued I was stunned. By far it was the best moment of the film.
What's the documentary called?
I'm a little late getting back to you, but if you are still out there the documentary is called "Leonard Cohen I'm Your Man". Its available on DVD.
Antony brought something new to this song - a new beauty.
Wow, ,, this is one of those songs that you don't want to end! Thank you Antony.
