    Laws vary by state as far as I know they're legal in the state of Connecticut. checked with the state police and put two lightman led red and blue strobes on the front and back of my bicycle. As long as its not a motor vehicle and you aren't attempting to pull someone over or run red lights and stop signs. Used them for years and never had an issue it made riding at night a lot more safe.

    Red/blue flashing lights are the least likely color combination in use to go unnoticed by drivers. This is the very reason they are used by police - to command attention. Bicycles are unlike any other vehicle on the road, they are the most likely to go unnoticed and to receive the most injury in an accident. If they were ordinary vehicles we would not need ordinances specifically for them. Texas. like most reasonable states, realize this (at least until all the CA crazies get here.) Rear-facing flashing red/blue lights ARE allowed on bicycles in Texas.

      Where I live there are no shoulders, no sidewalks, and most people ignore speed limits, averaging ~50 in a 35. They ignore my red blinker, but slow down for a flashing red/blue b/c, at first glance, they assume a LEO. By the time they realize it's just another schmuck on a bike, they've already slowed to somewhere closer to the actual speed limit.
      It's INCREDIBLY dangerous out here on these winding country roads. Impatient motorists passing within INCHES well in excess of the SL. I'd rather take the ticket. It's more than worth it compared to the alternative.

    • @RoySATX
      @RoySATX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thunderbear0 No, it's not fair for me to get hit by some stoned kid in his dads car not paying attention to me on a bike. I'll flash every color of the rainbow if it means I get the attention of the 3000lbs of steal flying up behind me. As I stated before, red and blue in combo are used for a reason by police... to command attention. Texas allows it on bikes for this very reason. What is illegal in Texas is what you see these drivers doing after the police officer pulls away, not giving the bicycles a full three-foot clearance for safety. Granted, the guys on the bikes are swerving - in this situation Texas law says the bikes should own the lane, the full lane , which would then make passing them illegal. I know I wouldn't allow me to be being squeezed between parked cars and drivers going 30mph at dusk.

    • @RoySATX
      @RoySATX 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thunderbear0 I apologize if I came across as a jerk, I know I can come across that way at times. I've witnessed two fatal bicycle accidents in my life, one just feet from me that took my best friend, and have seen a couple others involving compound fractures and lots of ER time. Every one of them was shockingly sudden, neither the bicyclist nor the driver saw it coming. Equal times it was the fault of one or the other, but the bicyclist in every case bore the greatest cost. I have been a bicyclist since my teens, I am now nearing sixty years of age. I sold my last car 10 years ago and have been riding daily ever since, an e-bike pulling a cart the past six years. From work to buying groceries, if I need to get there I do so on my bike. I know the bike laws in my jurisdiction, the vast majority I agree with but I try to adhere to them all, even the ones that seem designed to put me at risk. I know drivers don't want me on the street and I can understand their point of view, but according to the law I too am a vehicle, I am required to be on the street, it's my lane as much as theirs. We have an equal responsibility to each other to mitigate risk, but my risk remains high in the best of situations. It is my responsibility, then, to do everything I can to protect myself. I must be noticed, I can't afford to even accept a gracious drivers offer to let me go out of turn at an intersection because I might get hit by an impatient driver not seeing or expecting me. I am still alive because I stay aware, and make others aware of me. I must be the most obnoxiously obvious vehicle on the road. Not obnoxious, mind you, obnoxiously obvious. My life, every day, depends on every vehicle on the road seeing my bike over all the other distractions, and seeing it in time to accurately maintain a safe speed and distance from me. I am the only crumple zone I have, and I don't want to end up in the body shop. Please, share the road, play nice, I'm peddling as fast as I can!
