  • In this video we do something a little different. Gary take us back to his home town of Ilford, East London. He recalls his memories as he shows us around his childhood home and then walks us down his street. He finishes with an important message about the voices we hear in the mainstream media with regards to economics.

    Hats off to you, Gary! Lots of people who gained success later in life try to hide or deny their grassroot origin, how pathetic! It's so nice to see what's your formative years looked like and in situ, especially you had repeatedly described your upbringing. Seeing the actual place makes the stories more real and incredible! Acknowledging and reflecting on one's poor background when making success is really important. You can't imagine how much you've inspired many young people, who're so much in need to see what's possible! Showing us where you lived as a young kid is truly amazing!

    Hi Gary, this video really hit home for me and I just wanted to leave a comment to to say thank you for making it. I grew up not too far from Ilford - in East Ham/Beckton. My sister lives in Ilford, just off Romford Road so visiting Ilford was something I did quite regularly as a young kid. It's inspiring seeing how much you've achieved coming from a beginning somewhat similar to mine. I've been state educated all my life and lived in East Ham until I was 17 (I'm 20 now). I now attend Imperial College where I am in my second year studying Theoretical Physics. I've recently become interested in finance and the economy after seeing how much turbulence there has been in our country over the last 6 years and especially this year with all the uncertainty about inflation, energy bills, the markets and the like and your channel has been really helpful in making me understand more about what's really going on. I'm an avid Novara Viewer and in the times Michael has had you on Tysky recently you've really wowed me with your intelligence and understanding of what's going on.
    I hope that perhaps I might reach a similar level of success to you, to hopefully be able to help my family financially and give myself a life that I can be proud of. I really love watching your videos and (although I admittedly sound posh - my parents made me watch a lot of BBC breakfast growing up!) seeing how someone from so close to where I grew up has achieved so much, someone who sounds like the people in my hometown, someone who lives not too far from my secondary school (I went to Bishop Challoner, near Shadwell) has managed to achieve so much despite their origins really inspires me.
    Please keep making more videos, you're teaching us all so much and doing our nation a public service that it so desperately needs.
    I hope you know that even when it might not seem like it that you are really making a difference.
    Best wishes,
    Ana

    Thank you so much for showing us Gary. I think when you grow up poor (I did too) it stays with you but what makes all the difference is if there was love in the house. Happy memories come from love and peace, no matter how much (or little) money you have. It is bloody awful to live in poverty but it's a while lot easier if you have a happy family.

    Ilford London Irish.. I crossed that bridge to primary school, 70s, once alone.. there was one door halfway, leading down to the tracks. Bad sightlines. Burned into my synapsii. Ma started out as a cleaner on the carrages beside Plessey's, always remember the electro-chem smells, before becoming NHS nurse, Chadwell Heath. Also learned to swim in the baths. Or sink. We left it for Ireland when I was 9, a pup. Dunno why I'm telling google this.
    Cheers for showing memorables of the home from home town

    I grew up 1.3 miles south of you in Barking in the 70s and 80s. I did a silly thing, I didn't want to join my dad in banking and followed my love of railways and worked for British Rail. I can't complain though, I've had a good life, it's possible without riches, but impossible if you're unlucky with jobs.

Thank you for showing us where you grew up. The journey of your life still absolutely blows my mind - very inspiring stuff! I've never willed anyone to succeed more than you. What you are doing is desperately needed and so important, Gary. No pressure though dude! But know that you have so many behind you 100%. Gary's mum - aren't we lucky?! 😄

    Hey Garry, I just subscribed to your channel since I grew up in Ilford and what you said totally resonated with me. In my teens, I used to swim at that pool you mentioned and hang out at The Cauliflower (not sure if it's still there). Even though I grew up poor, I still remember having fun with my mates, despite having very little. Things had changed so much when I went back after 7 years. But you're right you will never hear the voices of people from places like Ilford in the mainstream media. I am looking forward to more of your content, you are providing valuable information. Cheers 🙏🏽

    Great video man, massive props to what you’re doing especially highlighting where you were from and what you’ve achieved. I work at a university and some of the students that I deal with come from backgrounds similar to yourself and I, I’ve always said to them you can achieve your goals if you truly want it regardless of where you are from. It’s good to see you haven’t forgotten your routes, many times I’ve seen people move on, forgetting where they are from. I’m of the mindset always remember and appreciate where you grew up, you may go onto better things but you never know when things can turn out for the worse.

  • @mattsennett
    @mattsennett 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's so important to remember where you come from and how you felt at those key moments in time.
    You can use those memories to help others going through what you have been through to develop as ultimately that is what we are here for.

    Full respect to you Gary. I grew up just down the road off green lane in a very similar house. I’m 15 years older than you but eople like us didn’t go into economics or the city, but onto the building sites. You’ve bucked the trend and shown that it can be done. If more people like us with a working class background and a social conscience were able to work in these jobs we could make a change. Really looking forward to watching your other videos, paul heaton’s retweet led me to check you out. Good luck spreading your message

    I had a decent education and did well at school and was the first in my whole family to go to university. Unlike many people who forgot about their past I have stuck very much to the socialist background that my dad told me about. Not all well off people forget.

    Gary I was brought up in a very poor area in a stair in Edinburgh. I’m sure use had stairs down there just use didn’t stay in one. So you don't have to tell me I know all about those hard times but what separates your upbringings to mines was you were just born naturally good with numbers were people from our up bringing aren't usually. I mean it is good to see and hear someone like you has took the skills he was born with and built on them. So I just wanted to remind you yes we had similar up bringing but we didn't have the same opportunities

    • @garyseconomics
      @garyseconomics  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for this comment, it is actually I think a really good point. I have always had a talent with numbers from a young age, and I know that, without that, I wouldn't have been able to achieve any of the things that I have done, in finance and economics. In a way, that is why I make this channel - I know that for most people the option that I was able to take just isn't an option, and then for most people it is very difficult to move from that kind of space to a place of financial security. I've got lots of other videos where I talk about what changes need to be made in order to improve the situation for ordinary people from my kind of background. Hope you are doing well up in Edinburgh, glad to see my videos have made it all the way up there!

      @@garyseconomics can we also acknowledge the fact that poorer kids tend to score lower in all things school related, overall, simply because of their socioeconomic background? Sure, there will be a few who break through the trend, but it's much easier to make use of one's skills when there is a support network there that will help develop them. It used to be that one of the best indicators of a child's future academic performance was the number of books in their family home - a correlation presumably on the decline because of technology, but still holding water today and serving as a further indication of how the cycle of poverty is almost impossible to break by the individual in a system designed on the pretence of "if work hard and you'll go far".

    I've watched a number of your videos and a few things have occurred to me. Instead of using the word '' poor '' why not vary it with '' The low waged ''. The problem is wealth inequality but the fix is a higher standard of living for the poor. The key is higher wages- -a bigger slice of the cake. Also you never say the phrase '' Progressive Taxation''. Surely this the standard phrase for redistributing the wealth of the country?
    Another bar to working aspirations is the fact they are expected to fund their own pension from their low wages. The UK is another low wage economy. Whatever the list of reasons why this prevails- -Two Party State, Globalism the low wage economy is a killer.
    Have you ever read ,'' Hard Work '', by Polly Toynbee or, more famously, ''Nickel and Dimed '', by Barbara Ehrenreich, two books from the literature?
    All the best.
