as ankle biters living in an 80's East Ham council sink estate, we viewed Ilford as a gardenia of aspiration. The epitome of chic, modern living for a grafting working class lad & his family. The mouldering decay of the area has been Exponential since the late 90's.
Grew up in Ilford in the 60's and 70's. Blimey what a change. Passed through it a few years ago and didn't recognise much. I drove a cab on the Balfour road rank for 10 years. Bet I couldn't get to Ley Street now. haha. great old place to grow up though.
Good OLD ILFORD. How it was when we moved there in 1980s. Loved it when I moved there by sheer chance and still love it. Mind you it has changed with High Rise Buildings and loads of people moved in and crammed the borough, but, I guess the same applies to all other boroughs due to London Expanding. Back in the 1980s London was considered zone 1 and 2 now its expanded to zone 6.
I miss Ilford in the 80s. Not the same feel there anymore when I visit. Things have moved on. Great seeing the old shops in Ilford town centre on the video. The exchange is still there. Used to have a good food court but not anymore.
‘Ilford and Redbridge are on the up and up.’ Well Frank you got that one badly wrong, and so did the developers and politicians. The place is now a complete karzi, run down and deprived, countless businesses have gone bust or fled and its a shadow of the place it used to be.
RIP, Frank Bough. Lovely man. The screen cannot lie -he was a decent, respectable and warm hearted gentleman - a class apart from the self-obsessed and obscenely overpaid characterless television presenters of today.
How did they let Ilford get to what it is now. I’m guessing Plessys closing and fords nearby didn’t help. M&S closed recently. At least I guess Wanstead and Woodford are still very nice places.
Used to love going to the ilford palais when i was younger. Then a few years later Room at the Top All gone now. As most of the decent shops as well. Leytonstone has gone to the dogs as well, a dirty area. All because of diversity . .
This was redbridge in its heyday. How sad to see the desperate state it’s in now. No one wants to live here and a council run by gangsters. Corruption is king.
Ilford is currently a boom town. A true remainder, it welcomes everybody from all over the world. These people spend money, hence the boom town. Yes, it is not as boring as before it is now a thriving super cosmopolitan place with lots of places to stay such as Best Western and Go Native Pioneer point apartments. Cross rail is coming to Ilford we have excellent parks, Valentines park and Mansion aswell as Wanstead park. We have an excellent golf course. Sure as with any thriving place, beggars, shoplifters, pickpockets, prostitutes and cannabis dealers are also attracted to Ilford however the police is doing an excellent job keeping on top of these issues. Just be sharp and alert about yourself and you will enjoy Ilford.
Nostalgia. I grew up in Ilford. Moved out in 1984 when I was 18. Glad I got out when I did.
Bye

Very sad to see what it has become . But it was a great place to grow up in the 1950/60s . that wonderful high road is a wasteland now

My home town, very nostalgic watching this.

You're so right. If they could clone him and deploy him on BBC today, he could easily take on any of the current live shows. A great loss.
@@PaulTaylor1 clone Frank Bough? Now there's a thought...
You're ok with his prodigious appetite for cocaine fueled orgies?

3/4 of the Councillors now from the Indian Sub continent.
A takeover in 40 years,1000 years of continuous history over!
Where has this place gone? Time really is the Fourth Dimension
back when Ilford had normal shops and its residents had standards of what shops they wanted instead of this 'closing down sale' market 'shops'
Thats because of Amazon and internet shopping.
i just saw my old building sosciety the leeds in ilford high street
Ilford was a a very desirable place to live... now not so much
A completely different world to now. Like setting foot in another universe
It’s like a mini Palestine now with the council ignoring all the Palestinian flags flying from the lampposts.
It's lovely isn't it?.
wow, Frank Bough passed away just this past October of 2020.
Wanstead is one of the loveliest areas in London!...
Ilford now resembles Bangladesh
Ilford should be held up as a strong example of how an area can completely fall into degradation, so it doesn't happen to any other areas.
@Aarontlondon What happened to Redbridge between 1990- 2024 will eventually happen to Havering.
It's also an example of how highways can destroy a nice community

You have to hunt the white face there now. Barkingside is almost as bad
Ilford town for drugs, crime and prostitution. Dirty shit hole of a place.😢
Its clogged up. And then there's the traffic.
most of it is a slum now
A three bed terrace off ilford lane goes for £500k. There must be something going for it.
