  • Goldeneye 007 is one of the most cherished games of the 1990s, the third best-selling Nintendo 64 game of all time and paved the way for the FPS genre on consoles. But it's also one of the most influential games on modern game AI and in this episode I'm going to discuss why that is the case.
    If you want to know how the GoldenEye AI actually works? Well I have another video dedicated to just that:
    • The Secrets of GoldenE...
    Design Dive is the series on AI and Games where I explore how artificial intelligence impacts game design and vice versa.

    The way enemies respond to getting shot is still quite satisfying in this game. Wish some modern games would revive that idea

    • @josephpotter5766
      @josephpotter5766 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ironic thing is that they are so satisfying because their reactions are exaggerated, almost cartoonish. Modern games use highly sophisticated procedural or physics based systems like Havok or Euphoria rather than GE007's simple canned animations, but because the effect of those systems has been tuned for more realistic effect they don't have the filmic punch of those canned but theatrical animations.

    • @clawrence034
      @clawrence034 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@josephpotter5766 There's an interview with Christopher Lee where he's describing what it looks like when someone gets shot: a slight look of surprise and then they collapse. I wonder if canned animations actually do a better job of capturing that then a physics engine that throws rag dolls in the air. Even though they're exaggerated, they're more "realistic" than most physics based animations.

    It's so hard to overstate how important this single title was to the entire landscape of video games from both a developer and a player perspective. Just such a classic. I'm so, so grateful I got to play it non-stop in its prime.

    • @gf4670
      @gf4670 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup. It's hard to explain to people what it was like to be a teenage boy in the mid 90s and experiencing how radically different video games suddenly became with Playstation and then Goldeneye taking the gameplay possibilities that far. It was a totally different way to experience a game that today is simply the way it's done, but back then nothing else like it had ever existed, at least for the home console.

    I feel like it's amazing how little FPS games after it used the core ideas from Goldeneye. Having mission objectives encouraging you to replay levels over and over isn't very commonplace I can only think of Timesplitters which had a lot of the same developers.

    There are numerous games over the years that have shaped players perceptions of AI, but GoldenEye is one that had a subtle but indelible mark on the world. It's the game that got me thinking about game AI long before I started thinking about AI (and Games). Plus, as mentioned at the end of the episode, if you want to know how the AI of Goldeneye *actually works* check out episode 44 of the AI and Games show.

    As much as I love Goldeneye I feel like Perfect Dark on N64 was just so much better in almost every way. From much better weapon variety, secondary functions on weapons (some of which completely changed how the weapon handled), actual reload animations, and the combat simulator actually having AI players so you could just jump into a game without needing friends. I still think it was dang near perfect for the time it came out and yet the game is so rarely discussed. Goldeneye almost always steals the attention and that always bothers me to no end.

      To be fair that's kinda how Design Dive came about, as I wanted to give myself a bit more breathing space. Though I still keep it very much in the realms of AI, because that's kinda how I think. But, I am working on new DD episodes that aren't really about AI. Then Goldeneye-like shooters are subtype of FPS that has unfortunately died out.

    • @DuelScreen
      @DuelScreen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was the original and only type and simply died out due to the popularity of the Counterstrike style games. Fast and responsive vs slow and methodical. The recent Doom remake did a good job updating this with modern systems. I think there's room for both styles going forward.

    • @Reyma777
      @Reyma777 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DuelScreen I think the Goldeneye- like shooters died out due to the more casual FPS fans gravitating towards Call of Duty from 2005 onwards. Additionally, the 007 games during the PS3/360 weren’t that successful. Perfect Dark Zero was the last popular Goldeneye-like shooter that I can think off, it had decent sales and remained popular on Xbox Live for about a year. Timesplitters : Future Perfect which released the same year, was arguably a much better Goldeneye-like shooter than PDZ. However,Timesplitters: Future Perfect didn’t do so well sales wise.

    • @33Dannyb
      @33Dannyb 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Online Multiplayer definitely had a hand in killing off Goldeneye type FPS’s. Back when single player was still the primary way to enjoy games, console FPS’s were way more story and mission based. Lots of PS1, N64, GameCube, and Ps2 FPS’s were like this.
      And of course, as the 360 and PS3 rolled out, and as the ever growing online PC community grew, single player focused FPS’s died a painful death.

    4:45 You are kind of incorrect in regards to Turok and Turok 2. You can perform stealth kills in those games using the bow (which are sounds the AI does not hear). Enemies also have a detection radius that you could also sneak around using the crouch button in Turok 2 (or the "walk" button in the original Turok 1 for the N64).

    An interesting video, thanks. Goldeneye doesn't seem to get the credit for invention that it deserves; when people talk about innovative first person shooters, they mention Doom, Quake, Half-Life, etc, but rarely Goldeneye. Duke Nukem 64 is another game that rarely gets the credit for it's (at that time) new and experimental features.
    Even today, Goldeneye is my second ever favourite game, after the superb Perfect Dark. To me, nothing else has even approached them, other than Timesplitters 2 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect (not Timesplitters 1, though that was an OK game, but the lack of a real single player campaign, and it's 'too simple' feel didn't endear me to the game).

    This is the remastered version not the original N64 as I’ve noticed it’s more than 15 frames a second

    • @ConkerTS
      @ConkerTS 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no remastered version of Goldeneye. Rare were working on one for the XBox 360, but for legal reasons it was sadly abandoned. Presumably Goldeneye in this video was played on an emulator, probably the one available from
      www.shootersforever.com/forums_message_boards/viewtopic.php?t=7045
      which gives up to 60 frames per second, and automatically remaps the controls to use the WASD keys and the mouse, as in PC first person shooters.
      Goldeneye on the N64 does drop to 15 FPS or less at times, but it also runs higher, depending on what's on screen at the time (full screen explosions especially can hammer the frame-rate). This was the time where true 3D was emerging, so the games of that era, be they on the N64, Playstation, or PC (via the Voodoo 3Dfx cards, etc), had frame-rates that were often in the teens and very rarely even got close to 30 fps. At the time, we (the players) rarely noticed it unless it got really bad, as it was all we were used to, and even today many of the games are still fully playable if you take the time to get used to the low frame-rate and low resolution.
      But, I'd imagine, someone only used to playing modern PC first person shooters at more than 60 fps would probably assume, if they then tried an N64 and Goldeneye, that there was something wrong with the console. In the same way that nowadays many children probably don't realise that there was a time when televisions could only show black and white.
