    I totally agree with you on many points here. R9 works fine for me too, I have it in a couple of my smaller builds. I love the tiny receivers, and love Fport for it's ability to have control and telemetry over a single wire. Makes it super simple to stick a receiver out in a wingtip or the tail with only a 3-wire servo cable out to it. (power ground and signal) In other cases I use different radio links. I also use Crossfire, Dragonlink (433 and 900), and even have some old OpenLRS stuff around. It's all out there and available, use what fits your scenario and be happy about it! lol I've never had any issues using R9 though, kinda like it for what it is. FYI, mine is the "old" R9 before access, and I don't mind. It won't get updated, but I don't have to worry about updates... lol Dragonlink on the other hand, I feel it's worth the cost when you want/need the best link available... ;) Full power telemetry (1W onboard) is great when you need two way telemetry along side your radio link for many miles out from home. It's definitely not limited to PPM output either. In fact the receivers I/O pins are probably more configurable than any other receivers I'm currently using. The cost and size/weight of even their smaller receivers keep it out of my smaller builds though. It makes sense to save it for the bigger long range stuff.

    Hey Marc. I've been guilty in the past of making comments about ACCESS protocol, but rest assured they were only tongue in cheek. Ultimately the best radio system to use is one you're most comfortable with and have good confidence in. As they say, if it's not broke, don't fix it 👍
    I have a similar setup to you, although using crossfire. I have a module in my TX16S and one in my Zorro, both modules are bound to all my aircraft using crossfire's model share feature also. However, I've found that the portability of the Zorro has effectively made it my default controller now.
    Like you say, the best system is one that suits your personal requirements and R9 does that for you. Nice video.

    Thank you for this very rationale explanation of why you use FrSky R9. You mentioned the three main points were price, 16 channels and three wires. ACCESS has the ability to go up to 24 channels, if you really need 24 channels.

      yes indeed but only on 2.4GHz and only with the latest Archer series receivers. not on R9 and older 2.4G gear. but thanks for the reminder.

    Crossfire here Marc. I got it on sale about 2 years ago with 5 rxs, 3 immortal T antennas, and 2 standard antennas for 200 bucks. I like what they are doing with ELRS but Im too invested in the TBS ecosystem and it works for me. Haven’t even updated the fw in 6-7 months.

    R9 Access user here too 😁 Apart from a little bit of confusion initially with firmware versions i'm pretty happy as it 'just works'(tm)
    With the exception of one model I'm using the r9mx receiver in everything and no failsafes so far. 🤞 3km no problems on airplanes at lowest power settings with a moxon on my tx although i do bump the power up to 200mw for my quads
    Great video many thanks 👍

    Using R9 acst for long range wings and it just works. Happy with reliability and range even if the firmware is now legacy. For short range quads I’m 100% thinking about ELRS.

    Hi Marc, I agree with pretty much all you said there. I have retained R9 on any older large models, but have retrofitted 2.4 ELRS in any smaller ones. I actually changed my antenna tracker from a U360GTS to a Sentinel because it uses the video feed for telemetry and not a relayed signal. I'm always open to trying something new, which I think is important.

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      How does this Video feed telemetry work for you? Especially when the video signal gets weaker? I have heard from a few people that they have massive issues as soon as the signal gets more noisy at higher distances.

    • @DavieRooker
      @DavieRooker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarcFPV I would say that would be it's biggest flaw. Once the video signal gets poor, the tracker returns to the "ready" position. Which means it looks straight up. I wanted to try elrs, so the Sentinel was an easy way to still use a tracker.

    I'm still using frsky r9 acst with eu lbt firmware. mostly because of the same reasons. I used d8/d16 receivers for the longest time and other than limited range the hardware was almost flawless, I still have plenty of d4r-ii receivers for low range, no fc builds. with opensky firmware u can upgrade them to sbus.

    I had so many headaches with R9 Acst firmware version updating. Trying to connect my Rx to my Q9 was a pain in the ass. I never liked trappy but when the priced dropped for the Crossfire I got it. Just connecting the crossfire module to the USB compared to the mess the R9 was to setup is such a relief.

      "I never liked Trappy"......Why? I don't have any crossfire products, but I enjoy watching TBS live whenever it comes on. The guy seems nice to me, and he has a wealth of knowledge about the hobby, which I find informative (whenever he shares it).

    I like the new Spektrum NX8 (2.4 GHz low power) for line of sight flying but for FPV I have Crossfire and R9 but pretty much switched everything over to R9 Access because it just seems so rock solid stable, lots of channels and relatively inexpensive. However with both 900 GHz systems (R9 and Crossfire) I have had a few failsafe episodes when I fly near my house in a very congested city area here in the USA where we have a lot of cell towers and commercial radio control links (for irrigation systems, water wells, etc.). Not sure what exactly is causing this.

    A question. Is it possible for a receiver to stop connecting with the module after a crash? No loose wires or solder connections detected. I have double checked, rechecked, and even tried it on a different flight controller. Could a crash affect the rx's ability to connect with the module?

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it is possible that there could have been a voltage spike in the crash that fried parts of the receiver.
      o had a receiver once that overheated as I embedded it in foam and this fried the telemetry transmitter it was able to receive radio signals and control the craft but telemetry was dead. so yes they can partially be damaged as well.

    • @adeyinkabrasil4426
      @adeyinkabrasil4426 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarcFPV thank you. That was precisely my conclusion as well, but I couldn't get anyone to confirm it. I always thought the purpose of the capacitor was to protect the electronics from such spikes. Now I'm beginning to think they are a complete waste.

    Hi Mark, I'm using TBS Crossfire full module(2w +bluetooth), nano RX on planes and drones which can fly for 10 minutes or less, and nano RX pro on the long range plane.
    I would like 16 channels... but I can update the RX without soldering wires and the RC is solid and I never had a hardware issue.
    I would have a question for you: if I set channels 3 and 4 from nano RX to be RX mavlink and TX mavlink and configured the corresponding UART to be mavlink, do you consider that I will have a better/more accurate tracking capabilities for my Myflydream Crossbow Mini antenna tracker?
    Thank you.

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AFAIK you can use the Mavlink Emu feature from Crossfire to just use the telemetry from the planbe over the normal CRSF link to be put out over BT to your tracker as Mavlink telemetry. I think the extra Mavlink Connection you can set up with a receiver over a spare uart is only for a full bi-directional communication between the Flight Controller and a Ground Station Software like QGroundControl or Mission planner while in parallel you have RC link and standard telemetry through the CRSF link.
      I could be wrong with that as I don't actively use crossfire and never tried this feature.

    I love my r9m. I just heard edge tx released firmware to run the r9 access system. This would make it so could get away from my qx7 and get a better radio to fit my hands like a boxer or tx16s. How hard is it to do the mod?

    • @MarcFPV
      @MarcFPV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Grim. The mod is pretty easy. Just 3 wires to solder in. But you need to do some precision soldering with 2 wires on a tiny SMD component.
