The original BEF soldiers proudly called themselves"the old contemptibles" after the Kaiser called them "A contemptible little army"... which shot down thousands of German troops with disciplined aimed fire FIRED at 4 or 5 shots per minute
I am pretty sure they were firing a lot more than 4 or 5 rounds a minute. If they were firing a round every six seconds that would be 10 rounds a minute.
Actually, the list of demands Austria sent to Serbia had 10 requests. Serbia agreed to 9... Basically, to all but "accept Austrian investigators in Serbia and give them all the power to do whatever they want as if they were in Austria"... However, Serbia offered an alternative: INTERNATIONAL team of investigators (which would also include Austrians)... And that was good enough for the rest of Europe and it was considered that the reply was more than satisfactory and that Austria should accept it... Unless they actually wanted war, in which case other European countries would interfere. And that is pretty much exactly what happened... Austria rejected, declared war on Serbia (through REGULAR mail, not even diplomatic mail) and attacked... Others interfered and that was it... BTW the idea one prong of Austrian army had to advance over Serbian army artillery range, where all the Serbian gunners knew the distances by heart wasn't one of their brightest moments... Also, Serbian army wasn't too well equipped, though did start a modernization process, slowly. However, Serbian army had plenty combat experience from Balkan wars, while Austrians had none of that

The Crimean war had less people involved than the Franco-Prussian war, by a large margin. In truth, the Franco-Prussian war was massive, it was just short. That's why I don't really agree with him regarding that, it's just not a big multinational war like the Napoleonic wars or WW1.

Even if Franz survived the assassination, Austria Hungary would still be super mad over the fact that it happened in the first place and a ultimatum to Serbia is still likely.
2:50 he got that wrong, it was a major war, but not the last one, the last major war before WW1 was the Crimean War, because this is when a very big force of war happened between Russia, Britain, France, and some other countries, this was a war that was mainly to show who was "the biggest bird."
There were Austro-Hungarian attacks through the plain of Vojvodina, but it is a plain, and across the Danube on the Serbian side there are hills, you can see them coming for 100 km. Artillery would have massacred them, that's why they chose to attack through Bosnia and across the Drina. The Serbs had two modern conflicts at that time and they had a well-coordinated and motivated army. Only when the Germans came to help the Austrians did Serbia fall.

Very good critique. While it’s a simplification of events it does miss two important points: the Austro-Hungarians made numerous demand on Serbia and Serbia accepted all but the one that they take part in the investigation into the assassination and in the investigation and prosecution of the ring-leaders on Serbian territory. No sovereign country could allow such a demand. The other is the lead up to the first battle of the Marne-when von Moltke weakened the right wing and led to the German 1st army swinging east of Paris instead of going to the west in a large envelopment. The result was an open German right flank the Joffre exploited, and led to the German retreat and stalemate.

There was no reason why it would be beneficial for the Germans + Austrians to fight the Russians. Germany needed to expand economically it would have had all the market and all the raw materials from the East. Russia needed to modernize it would gain all the technology and investment from Germany. The only power that benefited from their war was the British/nascent American Empire. not remotely the case. in fact pretty much all of Europe was well aware that if allowed to progress unhindered that Russia would surpass them all, and that it was "vital to the continued success of the nation" to beat down Russia before they could become a real threat. people even before the two world wars and Russian civil war had already foreseen the super power that it would inevitably become. also, in what way did America benefit in the slightest from ww1? they gained nothing from the outcome, the only thing that happened in relation to them is that other nations realized their enormous economic power. prior to ww1 the USA had the smallest standing army and was still considered the funny backwater nation it had been considered since its inception. but after mobilizing almost overnight a massive well equipped army ready to fight as a global power, entirely due to the massive industrial and economic power it already had, the rest of the world was made to realize that America was a sleeping giant best left alone with their isolationist policy. not to mention, that by the time America actually joined the war it had already essentially become Germany versus the entire world, as the only military not under German control or that had not yet surrendered was what was left of Bulgaria's army. now, the british (and the French) both benefited quite a bit with a number of territory gains very true. but they... you know... won the war. benefiting tends to happen when you do that. and i see no modern day correlation at all, so I'm not sure what you are getting at there.

My biggest gripe with the video is the very start. Most countries just did not want the war. Most French didn't really care about Alsace Lorraine by 1914. The British, French and Russians were satisfied powers with no interest in having more to govern. The Germans wanted to build a big navy and get colonies, but were friendly with the British and dominated by anti-war parties. Only the Austrian cabinet and Hungarians really wanted the war. Even the Ottomans who went on to be the most heinous during the war were dragged into it by rogue officers.

As a german, i never understand why Prussia should have attack france. Thats dull Frenchbrit prop. For what? if not prevantative, against an agressor which regards the Rhine as its natural northern border, regardless of its inhabitants. As the French allways had do so. To conquer Land with strange speaking aborigines, was never an option for germans. i for myself am convinced that both German movements 1914 and special 1941 to the east were due to real threats. I speak for Germany not for NATO mobsters. Those are the same War Mongers as 1914.
