As a 17 year old in the late 50's I had recording of them and when my parents went on holiday I played it nonstop in a big old house..........Ah sweet freedom,!
This is just the most pleasant music I have experienced. They calmed me down as a teenager, and I questioned everything, but never their work.. For me, they are the greatest quartet ever.
breathless, timeless, outstanding, so much feeling so much romance towards music.not even the best of wines would have been sipped with so much love. endless masterpeices.
I saw them in the sixties at the Blackhawk in San Francisco. It was great to see how they paid so close attention to one another during a performance. Extremely professional even then. They are unmatched,in a world of their own. I still love their music.
IMHO, the MJQ has a claim to be the greatest jazz quartet ever. Four jazz greats who just clicked, where the whole was a great deal more than its incredible parts! It's just a rhythm section with vibes. What a rhythm section!! They turned themselves into a living breathing organism. Look at their faces. They're having a ball, even though they've played this countless times. Well rehearsed, but not OVERrehearsed. They're probably always surprising each other!!
Sewanee University (Tennessee) in the summer of 1961: MJQ played an amazing concert to a diverse, appreciative audience, beginning their first and each song - perfectly synchronized - without so much as a glance, an audible count or nod of the head. And so it was with them; a Swiss watch of talents, incomparable.
The epitome of cool and class. Throw this on the car stereo and take a drive up highway one from San Simeon to Carmel sometime... MJQ, Erroll Garner, Miles' Kind Of Bue...I don't think we'll see their ilk again any time soon.
Jazz at its finest. As a percussionist I have to say any jazz song with vibes becomes a favorite of mine. So I guess any song by these guys automatically goes towards the top of the list.
Love the camera work... Vibes gotta be the coolest instrument ever. Chamber jazz at its finest. Performed appropriately on a concert hall stage. I could listen to this stuff all night. And never once ask myself where the horn player is.
What a long strange road we music lovers have been on this time around. To think that the MJQ had already made it's best recordings by about 1965! Here we are fifty years later and the garbage music that's being promoted by the biz compared to these high priests of music that played during our lifetimes! The singer Nancy Wilson had a radio interview show and interviewed Buddy? Clarke (trumpet - Doc Severensen NBC orchestra) who told her that when he was touring in the '50's there were five or six major jazz band quartets quintets etc in every major American City playing every night all over the country! All those great musicians playing for people and getting paid. To my mind there are still that many good musicians around - they just don't have anywhere to play. Hang in there people. When we cross over there's gonna be a lot of great musicians keepin' the Big Beat!
@1948BigCy Great analogy -Noone can really , sound like this or play w/ this much interweaving and knowing as a Unit .Living Breathing Organism , Can't touch that ,It;s what it was.. great composers ....
This great band has gone down in history. All the members have exited this planet. Excellent chamber jazz.

Can you believe these guys played in the De Montfort Hall, Leicester around 1959/60. I was there. I still remember the night - wonderful stuff.

Magnifique groupe !
Genius Music. Late 80s early 90s. Played this song many times since the early 50s - that's why it was PEFECT.
These four guys work together in perfect genius.
Beautiful.
The best quartet ever in jazz music, without any doubt
never get tired of MJQ - from my first exposure to them in 1953 until present day - brilliant musicians performing so eloquently.

Best quartet ever.
I bought the album " One Never Knows "in 1958 or so, Had many enjoyable sessions listening to it and others.
Can you imagine this. Elegant jazz. That's what it is. Jazz performed in tuxedos while not selling out to rank commercialism.
Lasting, distinct and wonderfully swinging Chamber Jazz in blossom.
Pure class just wished i,d seen them live

Jazz is for people who understand music.
It's why I love it!

Marvelous. John Lewis's syncopation are incredible, lyrical; when Milt's Jackson continuo keeps the line. Fusional.

One more comment. I would've wanted to hear MJQ turn to Debussy and perform "La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin." It'd work.
Persistent distinct chamber jazz.
