  • Do you need to spend up big cash on wheels, or can you use trash? In this new series, we'll get both, then get an expert to decide. Along the way, one car will modified with loads of cash, and the other one will be modified with parts found from dumpster diving, recyclers, second hand parts or the cheapest parts we can find.

      I like this but once its all over I would also like to see what happens if the cars are switched. Of course that would involve buying two sets of mods each - so probably a no go on financial grounds - but it might give a better idea if it was the money or the chassis' adapting to mods giving the edge.

    OEM+ is always a good starting point for a cheap wheel upgrade. If there are higher trim levels of your car that have better factory wheels, you can sometimes pick them up cheap through online marketplaces or even at the junkyard.

    • @Kryndon64

      This. On my mitsubishi (legnum) i put EVO 8 enkei wheels because the fitment is perfect, found them for a great price and they are a quality cast. On my Talon I put Stealth wheels because again, fitment is perfect and price was amazing.
      I don't find it reasonable to spend thousands on brand new wheels and tires. I always buy 2nd hand because it's what I can afford and it's better for the environment. Keep recycling, one man's trash is another man's treasure!

    • @jakegackle7398

      Certainly. Sometimes, you can also get wheels that are a huge upgrade from another model from the same make. Example: my 2005 Subaru Outback XT has 17" wheels from a 2013 Subaru BRZ. They fit perfectly and are a great upgrade for the car. Better Tire options and OEM impact resistance help greatly.

It's interesting to see your track builds going for really expensive 17" TC105s, as most (if not all) track build ZC31s' here in Asia are running on 15" or maximum 16" wheels. The most notorious ones here in Singapore run 15" wheels so it'll be interesting to see how your build turns out! I used to run 17s and 16s on mine and I've got to say I preferred my 16s. I tend to agree. It's somewhat looks vs performance here as well as tyre choice. I think you can't get pilot sports in less than a 17", so that is prob a factor if they are sponsoring. I put 13" rims on my mini back in the day and it looked spectacular, but compared to a lightweight 10" minilite, the handling (and gearboxes!) suffered.

    I would have thought a bit "outside the box" with the wheels , I would have looked for a hub with the same stud pattern as the swift for the Purjo , then made them fit with a bearing resize or a bit of machining to suit if needed . That would make for a cheaper swap over even with a bit of machining paid for with a set of second hand wheels because of the availability of that stud pattern using second hand hubs 😉. It would be even better if you have the skills and tooling to machine the parts yourself or have a good friend that can do it for mates rates as I do .

    • @ferrumignis
      @ferrumignis ปีที่แล้ว

      When you have to send out parts for machining, things quickly become uncheap. The hubs would need to match the CV splines and have the correct offset, and then you'd need to redrill the disks and drums to match.

    Feel like I have to say that the issue with Marty's wheel cracking is nothing whatsoever to do with it being made of recycled metal, it's about the ductility of the metal (how far it will deform before fracturing). Those cheap (and old wheels) would have been cast and cooled very quickly, which results in larger crystalline structure of the metal and as a result, lower ductility.

    This is goijg to be an awesome series! I agree that wheels and tires are something to spend money on. When i got new wheels for my 2020 Civic, I got a set of Motegi Racing MR131 Traklite wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich GForce Comp 2 A/S+. I got cheaper tires because they had better tread wear that something nice and high end like PS4s or something. Plus, the BFGs are $185USD vs $300+ for PS4s. Those Motegi's did save some weight! Stock size, but 11lbs(4.9kg) lighter per corner. Definitely feels better than stock!
