  • Saul Leiter (1923-2013) was a groundbreaking American photographer and painter, best known for his pioneering use of color photography at a time when black and white dominated the art form. Born in Pittsburgh, Leiter moved to New York City in the 1940s, initially pursuing a career in painting. His transition into photography was inspired by his deep interest in abstraction and form, which he carried from his painting background into his photographic work.
Leiter’s early work included black-and-white street photography, but it was his use of color film that truly set him apart. At a time when color photography was largely reserved for commercial purposes, Leiter used it as an artistic medium to explore the subtleties of light, reflection, and everyday urban scenes. His images often featured blurred figures, fragmented compositions, and layers of reflection from windows and glass, creating an abstract and poetic quality. Leiter's New York street scenes are often bathed in muted, painterly hues, making his work feel almost dreamlike.
In addition to his street photography, Leiter also made a name for himself in fashion photography, contributing to Harper’s Bazaar and other major publications in the 1950s and 1960s. His fashion images, much like his street work, were noted for their innovative use of color, cropping, and unconventional angles.
Though largely overlooked during his lifetime, Saul Leiter’s work gained significant recognition later in his career. His photographs are now celebrated for their unique blend of painterly abstraction and street-level realism, positioning him as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century photography. Leiter’s legacy continues to inspire a new generation of photographers, particularly those interested in the expressive potential of color and the beauty of fleeting moments in urban life.
