    Just a tip… when a deer has its head down, they have the ability to drop their body much more quickly than when they have their head raised. I’m sure you may already know this but if the deers head is down it is much better to aim low rather than where you would normally aim

    I’ve been shooting trad bows for the past couple season and been lucky enough to harvest a few deer with it. I believe some of your inconsistencies are in the anchor point due to a short draw in the self bow. I also found a draw clicker to help a ton when practicing a repeatable draw. Please don’t put to trad gear down! It’s the best rush when that arrow finally hits its target!

    • @nicholasbragg4521
      @nicholasbragg4521 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clicker is most certainly an underutilized tool and helped me stop short drawing. I 100% agree. I’ve shot trad for just over a year and it is 100 percent the best most effective tool to help me so far along with far too many reps a day.

    Shot traditional for many years. Made my own bows for many years. And just learned something from an old traditional shooter. I always struggled with getting consistently tight groups and the old man told me it's all arrow spine. Properly and equally spined arrows are the key to shooting consistently tight groups. Look into that. Love the video!

    Stick with your selfbow, turn that hat around and pick your spot and it’ll turn out a lot different. When I started shooting trad I still had a compound and when things got tough I always jumped back to my wheels. My last buck I shot was at 18 yards with my elite and all I could say in the moment was I wish I’d had my recurve. Now that I’m on the same journey into primitive bow making and hunting I HAD to get rid of my crutch or I knew I would continue to lean on it and never hit my goals in primitive archery. Stay focused brother, you got this

    I picked up a longbow with the intention of harvesting a deer because I began to find a compound too easy for my liking. I thought I would just fling 100 arrows and be good to go. That led to a wounded animal that I did not find. What that experience did do was humble me and really made me dive deep into the rabbit hole of traditional archery. I have since killed 3 deer and a squirrel with my longbow, acquired my great grandpa's recurve, and shot at least 50,000 arrows in 3 years. I love your channel, from the fishing, to the hunting, and even through those rough days of brain surgery. I watched it all. I am excited to see where this archery adventure takes you because I know where it took me. Good luck and give your next ditch pickle a sniff for me.

    I struggled when I started bow hunting as well, but my dad taught me to practice as close to a hunting situation as possible. Even though there is nothing that can replicate the adrenaline rush and heart pounding/deep breathing that an up-close encounter with a whitetail will cause you, there are ways to mimic the situation. I would put on my hunting clothes, do 10, 12, 15-ish push ups, sprint 50 to 100 yards and then pick up my bow and shoot it. Elevated heart rate, out of breath, my shooting was poor at best, but the more I did it the better I became. Every little bit helps in this game! Keep training, you'll make it happen! Thanks for the great vids!

    Hey Justin, love the video. Archery with a stick bow is as pure as it gets. Here's a tip that helped me: start with small game and work your way up. It helps discipline your mind to be calm, and teaches you to trust instinct over impulse. Also its hard to remember in the heat of the moment, but holding a draw on a longbow can mess up your shot as its deforming the limbs. After smoothing drawing back let that arrow fly as soon as you hit that sweet spot. You'll get a buck with your bow one day soon, I know it. :)

    Practice don't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect!! When I was 14 my dad wouldn't let me bow hunt until I could put 10 arrows in a row on an 8-in pie plate at 30 yards. It took me 3 months shooting every day!! The following year I killed my first year with a bow basket rack eight point.

    Its funny, this is exactly the video I needed to see today. I'm like you a few years ago - this is my first year bow hunting (or hunting period for that matter) and I'm pretty much figuring it out all on my own. I think the reason I've identified so much with this trad bow series is I've been able to see you struggle and learn at the same time I am. I have doubts and fears about my abilities but I've worked hard this summer and next week I'll be taking those lessons out into the field for the first time. The best part of your channel has always been your humility and letting the viewer see your progress, setbacks, and doubts. Thank you for being a mentor to me to the outdoor world, its changed my life. This trad bow journey for you seems like it means a lot, so I hope you get back out with it soon, and if the opportunity arrives to harvest a deer as much as I would love to see the shot, there will be more hunts in the future - please feel free to take the deer and not lose it due to a camera adjustment. I've got the Empire of the Summer Moon arriving tomorrow!

    Man I had a near identical experience as you did when I got my first compound 2 years ago. Practiced all summer, felt really good and confident. Bow season comes and I get a shot at a doe and maaan every single thing I practiced just went out the window and I whiffed the shot. I was so disappointed in myself but luckily there were several does and one wandered back over to about 20 yards and I redeemed myself and put down my first deer with a bow.
    Obviously your situation is much more difficult with the prim bow and hopefully you're able to redeem yourself too! Appreciate the respect you show for the animal in not wanting to wound it and knowing when to back out and get some more practice in. Best of luck from Indiana!

    Justin, as a avid traditional shooter myself, let me give you some tips that you may or may not know.
    1st, You have to find a anchor point. Mine is my pointer finger in the corner of my mouth. Your release looks good though.
    2nd, and probably the most over looked is the ability to concentrate on a spot. I have paneling in my house. That gives me small panel nail heads to look at. In the off season I’ll take 30 minutes a day a just focus on that nail head. It can be from 5 feet away or further. Focus so hard on that small object until it’s all you can see clearly… everything else will be blurry. Do that everyday. That way when a deer comes in front of you and you pick out that one hair behind the shoulder, you’ll barely miss that hair. If you shoot at the deer, you’ll barely miss the deer but you’ll shoot high every time. Focus on a small spot.
    I suggest watching Clay Hayes on here on TH-cam if you don’t already.
    3rd, don’t pick up that compound if your serious about traditional archery… two different bows, and two totally different styles of shooting. It doesn’t take much shooting with a compound to have negative affects on your traditional shooting form. It affects most everyone else I know that shoots traditional then shoots compounds.
    Remember, pick a spot, anchor, apply back tension, relax forearm and hand for a smooth release.
    Good luck the rest of the season, it’s only just started!

  • @fixitquick79
    @fixitquick79 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing to keep in mind, after many years of trad bow hunting. Shooting tight groups at a target is one thing and an accomplishment. Shooting at an animal is another. You have to concentrate on aiming at the smallest thing you can see on that deer. A tuft of hair, a spot of shadow, etc. The enemy of the instinctive hunter over the instinctive target shooter is focus. Early on, sometimes for a few seasons is struggling with "shooting at the deer" rather than ignoring the rest of the deer and everything else and focusing solely on where exactly you want the very tip of that broadhead to enter the animal. It is a tough one to overcome sometimes.

    All the first of the video was great. The deep stuff of the building of the bow, the long journey of learning to shoot it, the relationship to the Indians and Fred Bear was super. I was on the verge of sharing this video with my traditional bow mentor. I'm glad I waited because when I saw the feeder it deflated me . I realize this is Texas and that is the way 99 percent of the hunting is done because it's easier to be successful. You have chosen traditional archery because of the challenge, now complete the journey and get rid of the feeders. JMHO

    Byron ferguson use to make and shoot straight bows. He was the best trick shoot I ever saw. His arrows had big floppy feathers and were tuned to the bow. A rest, nock and real feathers will help to keep your arrows from going array. An arrow with hard plastic feathers will push the point down and to the right. Nock and a good rest will help contain that. That fixed my issues with a recurve along with a sight.

    Very cool hunt! You will make it happen, and I look forward to seeing it. The first 28 deer I shot at with my recurve, I missed high. Personally, I have to go through my shot process (literally saying it to myself in my head) which helps me focus in the moment of truth. Please keep at it! BTW you will probably never have complete confidence with a trad bow, until you make a kill or two. After that you will gain more confidence, than you’ve ever had. Try hard to fight off those thoughts of doubt. From everything I’ve seen, you look like your shooting plenty good enough. Keep after it, and you will make it happen.

    ive been watchin all your videos for many, many years. you are the only person on youtube that i have the notification bell turned on for. lol. I have been shooting traditional style bows for many years as well. if there is a couple tips that i can give you with shooting instinctively is 1. get you an anchor point. i have seen when you shoot and alot of the times it looks as if your right hand is just floating. This causes arrow flight to be inconsistent. I always anchored my middle finder in the corner or my mouth. this makes it where you draw back to the exact same place every time. and 2, when you release the arrow, dont try to pluck the string, but instead let your fingers go limp and scrape your fingers straight back down the side of your face while simply trying to "touch your elbow to whatever is directly behind you". if you practice these 2 steps with traditional archery, your groups will tighten up tremendously and confidence with a traditional bow greatly increase. hopefully this helps. good luck buddy and happy hunting. Dont ever give up. youll get it.

    Huge tip for practicing real time situations. Run 10 yards back and forth then sit down and shoot it practices shooting with your heart pumping and trying to shoot the right spot every time your mind will be racing and when you end up hunting it will seem like it slows down your process. Try it out. It helped me with shot placement.

    One has to wonder how many times Fred Bear went through the same thing. Perseverance and practice pays. Good luck.

    I feel very similar about hog hunting with a blowgun! With that being said, you're definitely inspiring me to make my own bow and give that a try!

    Heh Brother.... outstanding video.
    Thinking outloud here and as an unmarried marriage councilor! 😉 When I watched your video of the ground blind you are shooting from i was immediately concerned about your space for shooting a traditional bow. I started shooting with a traditional osage bow my Grandpa had made. He had made the arrows too but didnt shoot them as they were very old. I started hunting with a recurve and later with one of Bear Archery's first compound... the Grizzly . But one thing I experienced is if anything touched any part of the bow it really effected flight. Something I'm sure you know. But shooting a traditional, from a sitting position in a cramped space with a canted bow creates all sorts of possible problems. Some that you would never know for sure. Make a ground blind in that Bush and clear the brush. Its an ultimate challenge to blend in and most importantly stand quietly. Just thinking outloud. If the winds right and you sit still and move slow when necessary you can do it. Of course there is good ol buck fever sometimes and you just get more experience...lol
    Dont give up. You're doing a bang up job.
    You're good people.
    God bless all here.

    Discipline yourself and make yourself earn it! Done a great job building the bow and outstanding shooting also. Keep at it you have the work ethic don’t let missing that buck keep you from reaching your goal. Stick with the trad bow and you will be much more grateful when it all comes together!

    I use to shoot long bow. Unfortunately an unjury has stopped that. 🥺. The best advice I can give is have a good anchor point and practice. Also tuning. Getting your bow tuned with the arrows is key. You should be able to shoot your arrows without fetching just as good as with. Get a good anchor point and practice for several months before the season starts.

    What has helped me thro out my training as a EP(Executive protection) is to do a cardio workout like a good one heavy breathing arms shaking ect and then shoot your body will pretty much go thro all of this when ur having your adrenalin rush you'll learn how to control your shaking and breathing and clear your mind
