I've been looking forward to making this piece for a long time. I am a massive fan of rugby, and every year my family and I sit down together and watch all of the Six Nations games. Over the last 3 years, we have played fantasy six nations, which I have never won.... grrrr. This year, with the hope of a win, I made this trophy to mark the special occasion. This trophy will last us another 9 years of Six nations tournaments, with every winner choosing the wood they would like the plague to be made from. Roll on the 4th of February! Let me know what you think, and if you too are a lover of rugby!
@@HarrySmithWoodturning Not really, as a bloody Yank, I was into ice hockey, which I grew up playing, but now I gave all that up. Howeva' I did (do) enjoy that movie Invictus based on a true story, have you seen it? As an artist, painter, chef, sculpture, writer, retired professional drummer, I appreciate amazing artwork and the passion it takes to make the things you do, true art sir...
Now @77, as a man who committed to living the Rugby lifestyle, playing & refereeing from 28-50, I'm indeed a BIG fan of 6 Nations matches & watch all the matches I can! We slso get English Premiership matches, 7s tournaments, & other internationals or high quality play, even to include Aussie Rugby League matches! The sports networks have been good, of late, to show Premiership Soccer, Bundes-League soccer, and even cricket! SO, for guys like me who grew up playing lots of organiized sports, and/or vacant lot/frozen pond neighborhood sports, we ARE in fandom heaven! Thanks for asking Harry, & a happy new year as well! Don't drink too much beer and eat too many peanuts, & enjoy the matches! Me, w/my Scots Irish, & French heritage, will cheer on for nearly everyone, even now the Italians 😂❗️
@@HarrySmithWoodturning Not really, but oddly enough, I have a friend that used my name to play collegiate rugby since his college didn't have a team and mine did. I found out about that after he made the team 🙂
@Harry, now at 77 yrs. & counting, I've been retired longer than I played & refereed! I was fortunate to have a 22 year combined career, mostly playing but with an emphasis on the wistle the final two or three. I was intro'd to the game while rehabbing a motorcycle racing injury, and vowed to resume athletics more safely! We have had an active interest, here stateside, for many years following the Olympics in the 1920s, with Cities from NY to the West Coast fielding sides. As well, many universities have played, with our beautiful game now spreading rapidly to thr high school level. I could go on but won't, don't wanna hog yer comments section! The trophy is loved here too, ESPECIALLY with the reveal below... Best Regards, RRC
I had to look up "Wenge" wood, I'd never heard of it. That is a lot of love to put into a trophy. Looks worth winning. I would rather play than watch. I would get thrashed of course but hey, there you go.
Bit late to the party, sorry! Happy New Year. I love rugby, having been brought up on the Welsh team of the 1970s. I used to play but was rubbish! Wanted to referee but arthritis caught up with me early. I love the cup, but was worried you were making an urn! Glad it’s a trophy. Best of British for the upcoming 6 Nations.
Leicester Tigers me, although now I don’t live in UK I don’t get to see them, sometimes I can get to watch “rugger” on tv where I am now but it’s not popular, any way enjoy your game, I love yew (note the spelling please) such fab wood colouring and smells delish, thx for showing, looking forwards to the podcast
What a great idea. Came out fantastic. In the USA Rugby is not big. The few times I have seen a Rugby match on TV I enjoyed watching 👍 but was bit lost on the rules😂.
Watch wheneve you can, we need the eyeballs! The Laws of the Game aren't terribly complicated, I learned them well enough to be a credible referee😂 Thanks for your time, and cheer on the USA even when we get trashed by New Zealand...
Thank you very much John! Happy new year! I love rugby so much but the rules can be very confusing at first. I definitely suggest watching the 6 nations when it starts in February, its the best championship all year 😁👍
Hi Harry I love rugby and the trophy and base and the little shields are awesome. That was a brilliant bit of craftsmanship you are a brilliant woodturner. The pieces of wood has character and is a nice colour and the grain is nice and I like the marks on it. You always amaze and inspire me by what you make and do on your videos, they are fantastic and very interesting. I'm looking forward to your chat video coming soon and the other things you plan to do. I can't wait to see what you have come up with for your next video. Happy New Year from Amanda xx
Amazing work. I like to work with wood and over the years have built all kinds of things from beds to wall hanging units to shelving units but have never owned a lathe. I have a friend that does have one. Hs favorite thing is making bowls. There is an abundance of free downed wood to work with around here such as when someone trims or cuts down a Mulberry or Mesquite or now and then an oak or pecan. We have Paloverde trees here as well that are desert adapted but have a yellowish color to them inside. No one I know has ever turned a piece of it. I am in Mesa, Arizona. USA. What basic lathe could you suggest that would be suitable for a beginner like me that is also affordable. I like the fact you have all kinds of options with your lathe instead of the basic one size fits all cheaper lathes available. I really enjoy your video's. Thanks.
A bit of dialogue explaining what you are doing, what chisels being used, what grade sandpaper and what finishes applied would help especially newbies to this craft! 19:15
Harry, Since you have a British accent and your prices are in pounds, I’m going with, you live somewhere in England! If I could have any wish I wanted, it would be to spend time with you as a student (for free of course) to learn just basic skills! You, Sir, are a Master! Wish or not, it would be my honor to be a Harry Smith student! ❤ So. When do I book a flight? 😂
Thank you very much Rob! Happy new year! Are you a fan of Rugby? 😁👍 I'll go into this in more detail during Episode 1 of Let's talk shop, but as a quick answer, it is currently just a hobby 😁👍

I know absolutely nothing about rugby but the piece turned out great 👍
I don't watch rugby but the trophy ia amazing! Such a fun family activity to enjoy together.
You could keep adding bases to it like the Stanley cup.
You can make a new trophy now when the Bokke win the 2024 WC in France '23. :)
